Perhaps the greatest Yiddish writer, who died just over a century ago, was Sholem Yankev Abramovitsh, better
known by his pen-name, Sholem Aleichem. Over a twenty-year period, Sholem Aleichem composed his most beloved stories, those of Teyve der Milkhiker, “Tevye the Dairyman,” that
upheaval in the Russian landscape, in Jewish life, and in family and societal values. The stories of Tevye reached a world-wide audience in Fiddler on the Roof, which has been performed in multiple languages throughout the world since its Broadway opening more than 50 years ago.
Hayntike Kinder (“Modern Children,” published in 1899) tells of eldest daughter Tseytl’s desire to marry the poor tailor, Motel, notwithstanding Tevye’s already having arranged a shiudukh with the wealthy butcher, Laizer Wolf. You know the story from Fiddler, which, in this instance, sticks very closely to the original, including the dream sequence through which Tevye convinces his wife Golde to agree to the switch in plans.
with the past. Tzeytl rebels against arranged marriages, and
successful marriage, given that it provides him with a good song opportunity (“Do you love me?”). But he recognizes, clearly with some trepidation, that he has embarked upon a slippery slope, and that the compromises that his younger daughters will demand in turn will be harder and harder to accept.
Five years after writing the story of Tzeytl and Motel, Sholem Aleichem produced the next chapter in Tevye’s life, the courtship and marriage of Hodel and Perchik, or as he
revolutionary, who brings the outside world into Tevye’s home. Tevye not only fears for the stability of his daughter’s life with a husband who will be forced into imprisonment and exile, but is also deeply troubled by the fundamental
of Jewish separateness, from the universalism embraced by communism. Tevye’s quoting, or, more accurately, misquoting of Biblical and Rabbinical sources, does little to persuade the
views as his well-meaning yet misguided desire to leave the shtetl in order to change the economic and social structure of the world.
It is the third marriage in his family that breaks Tevye’s heart, and the one that he absolutely refuses to accept. When his eldest Tzeytl chooses love over convention, Tevye rolls his eyes, but consents. When Hodel chooses love over a stable Jewish environment, Tevye very reluctantly agrees. But when Chava takes things a huge step further, and falls in love with Ukranian writer Chvedka Galagan, Tevye forcefully draws his line in the sand. He can bend no further, especially since Tsarist
Russian law would require Chava to convert to Christianity in order to marry Chvedka. Chava argues in the manner of her sisters before her, that love conquers all, that people are people, that nothing else should matter. You know from the play that Chava leaves her home, her faith and marries Chvedka.
A sign of a great writer is the timelessness of his stories. Reading the story of Chava, written some 120 years ago, we realize that it could have been written today. For we Jews of the early 21st century feel as befuddled as did Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye of the turn of the 20th century. We, like Tevye, are caught between two worlds, and are often unsure as to how best to navigate between the greater society that entices, that appeals to us on so many levels – and our own Jewish world that still retains a foothold in our hearts and consciousness.
We know that the thought of a world without Jews scares
of real Jews who struggled, so often through adversity, to ensure a continuity of Jewish life. But we know that, with all of the temptations of the surrounding world, with all of today’s technological advances, the distractions increase, and the draw of traditionalism to so many, diminishes. So how do we motivate those who follow us to carry on the practices we so cherish?
The answer may be found in our Pesah observance. Seventy years ago David ben Gurion was invited to address the newly-created United Nations, to speak on behalf of the creation
unsympathetic audience, he spoke the following words:
sail to the New World. This was a great event in the history of England. Yet I wonder if there is one Englishman who knows at what time the ship set sail. Do the English know how many people embarked on this voyage? What quality of bread did they eat? Yet more than three thousand three

the story of the Exodus and all the troubles Jews have endured since being exiled. They conclude this evening with two statements: This year, slaves. Next year, free people. This year here. Next year in Jerusalem, in Zion, in Eretz Yisrael.” Through the practices of our faith, especially evident during
this Passover season, we demonstrate how our allegiance to ancient traditions enables us to weather the uncertainties and upheavals of modern life, by providing us with a sense of purpose, grounded in the past, yet geared to the future. In every generation, the Haggadah reminds us, we have to imagine that we ourselves were freed from Egypt. Modernity

When I thought about what I wanted to write in my Passover
remarks this year, I thought I would write about Israel and the celebration of Israel’s 70th Birthday. Beth David has a long history of on-going support for the State of Israel. Even today when, as Conservative Jews in North America, our relationship with Israel has become more complicated, our support has not waivered. We have an amazing celebration planned for Israel’s 70th Birthday on April 19th (Yom Ha’atzmaut), including a concert with our own Cantor Loomer and spectacular dessert reception.
experience with you. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Beth David community, a small group of us were able to meet the refugee family that our community helped sponsor, as they arrived at the airport. I was humbled by them, and I am humbled by all of you who have responded so generously to their needs.
Their family of 7, parents, grandparents and 3 beautiful little girls, arrived with 4 suitcases and a few smaller bags. Those bags contained everything they owned. After a 30 hour trip from Jordan, they arrived with smiles and hugs of gratitude. Sarkes, the father, described to us the danger
they constantly felt during their 3 years in Jordan, and during their lives in Iraq before then. Higinia, his 73 year old mother, told me that she did not sleep for 3 years in Jordan, but “tonight I sleep”. As we drove from the airport to their temporary apartment in downtown Toronto, Sarkes marveled at how many people were walking around
of people there were.
As you read this, you are preparing your homes, tables and families for Passover. As we stood at the airport in early February, waiting for the family to come through the immigration process, I was reminded of our Seders, where we read that each of us must feel as if we have gone out of Egypt. Every year we recount our history of persecution, escape, and our journey to freedom, to a land we did not know, but believed would be better than the land we came from. As Jews, we have made this journey many times and now we were able to help this Armenian family on the same journey to Canada.
Whether we chose our Judaism or inherited it from our parents, as Jews we have inherited a legacy: a legacy of Torah, a legacy of the Shoah and a legacy of Israel. What does this legacy mean to Conservative Jews in Canada, who are free to worship in our inclusive
community with our wonderful clergy? For each of us the answer will be a little
obligation to preserve, to nourish and to encourage that legacy and allow it
way. Many of you have found a way to do that at Beth David. We need to
in our Beth David community.
I felt all of you with me as I stood at the airport and showed one refugee family our Jewish response to
On Passover, we will recall how the Israelites escaped from slavery to freedom. We should also recall how the Beth David community helped to bring a family to a place where they can worship freely and raise their children without fear.
Passover envisions a universal peace in the world, amongst all creatures. Our Beth David community helped bring our world one step closer to that universal peace.
Thank you,

Often, we consider the word “Redemption’ as meaning “Freedom”. But actually it means, saving, freeing from sin, absolution, retrieval,
return, exchange, cashing in, conversion, clearing, paying back, and honouring.
Dear Members!
Do not forget to properly relieve yourselves of the onerous task of removing all items of hametz from your household by performing the annual ritual of selling those items, on a temporary basis. As ritual director at Beth David, I humbly accept the honoured responsibility, as always, to act as your agent and seek the appropriately informed purchaser for this purpose. Forms are available online and at the synagogue
for your ritual pleasure.
Please be sure to do this no later than Thursday, March 29. Be aware, as well, that there is no great honour nor added bene t to being the last member to perform this time-tried task just before the advent of Pesach.
We greatly appreciate the traditional donation made to the synagogue as part of this practice.

We are instructed to tell our children of the reasons for
our people being taken out of Egypt. That requirement from the Hebrew
of our traditional written resource for the Seder, the Haggadah, as well as the epithet for the longest section, Maggid.
Fascinating and dramatic narrative is in no scarce supply in our Haggadah and in learning of the Exodus whether through the written word, the Pesach Seder oral tradition or via Hollywood portrayals.
But what happens after or, more accurately, between our annual Pesach experiences? Do we simply wait for the next time to tell / hear the same story again, in the same form, around the same table, with mostly the same group? Granted those of us who come with some regularity to services have the opportunity to hear and/or recite those relevant verses in the Torah and the numerous occasions in our daily and weekly liturgy recalling those events.
There is more we can do! If we want to provide more than a yearly lesson to the next generation, we need to set an example of motivation and commitment to exploring these themes with some regularity. Over the years in my capacity as ritual director, I am witness to the beautiful phenomenon of so many
learn and utilize new chanting and davening skills and hone their current abilities. I have also noticed how many of our members struggle with the Torah blessings when being called up for an
Aliyah. We would like to believe that the
which everyone should have, but we cannot make such assumptions. Of course, there is the intimidation factor when one comes up for this honour in front of the congregation, whether in the relatively intimate chapel environment or in the more stressful sanctuary setting.
Nevertheless, part of our “Vehigad’ta” responsibility is to show the story through a proper familiarity with, and practice of the most basic of our rituals. We praise and shep naches from our children, Jewish day school or other, when they perform well on their Bat/Bar Mitzvah celebration or on other occasions when they demonstrate their mastery of these
sense of satisfaction by performing at that same level. I was struck by a recent experience when the parents of one of my B’nai Mitzvah students had the courage to learn verses from Megillat Esther, which neither had ever chanted before, and the student readily expressed his pride in his parents’ accomplishment.
I challenge all our members in the coming year with the following tasks:
Those who may be challenged by the Torah blessings, should learn to chant them as precisely as possible so that every time someone comes up for the honour, those blessings are recited as they should be;
Every morning, weekday or Shabbat, I would like to see someone who has
of blessings in the service – Birchot HaShachar – get up and do it in front of the congregation! (This is really less of a challenge than one might think as 75% of the text is the same six words of almost any Hebrew blessing, repeated 14 times!)
Of course, those who are already able to perform these tasks, should take on something else that is new for them. These acts will demonstrate a commitment on the part of all our members, to themselves, their families, and the entire congregation that they take the injunction of that Passover task of VeHigad’ta l’Vincha as seriously and as contemporarily relevant as can be.
the coming year with requests from members to sign up for their Shabbat or Festival duty to chant those blessings. And, yes, it also means being at shul when the service begins!
To all, a Pesach Festival of ritual renewal, engaging educational endeavours, and Haggadic happenings in the full sense of the term.

As every year, we welcome our members, following the diligent search for all traces of Hametz the night before, to attend morning services on Erev Pesach, Friday March 30, concluding with the siyyum bekhorim and, following a brief breakfast, by the traditional ritual disposal and burning of Hametz. This will unburden you
from the need for pyro-technique at your own abode. There will be a bin at the entrance to the synagogue in which you can place your package upon arrival. Be sure that any hametz is wrapped only in paper, without any plastic container or wrapping.

Inclusion and Accessibility In May 2017, Rabbi Scheim and Dr. Lorne Sossin spoke at our shul for Shabbat Itanu. Dr. Sossin is Dean of
Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and was the Chair of the Board at Reena. Rabbi Scheim reminded us of our obligation as a Jewish community to help facilitate and support the full
participation of individuals with disabilities. Dr. Sossin prompted us to consider our obligation to remove barriers to full participation, celebrate
diversity and plan for the assistance many of us will need one day whether due to injury, illness or aging. The Itanu Committee recognizes that barriers can come in many forms and we are working towards
inclusion by making our facilities accessible and barrier-free. To date, we have completed an elevator, installed emergency evacuation ramps from the Sanctuary and
Ganz Family Social Hall, an accessible washroom has been installed on the lower level, we engage sign language interpreters on the High Holy Days, mezuzot have been lowered to accommodate congregants in
hearing impaired congregants who don’t have hearing aids equipped with built-in FM receivers and more handicap parking has been added in our parking lot.
The Itanu Committee’s next goal is, admittedly, ambitious. We recognize that there is an immediate need for an accessible washroom on the sanctuary level. Watch for more information.

At our Beth David Tu Bishvat Seder this year, the participants planted seeds; parsley seeds that will
be ready for our Pesach seders.
At our home, our parsley seeds are starting to sprout! They serve as a lovely reminder of two wonderful holidays, seasonality and nature, and of course our Beth David community.
As I write this looking out the window, the ground covered in snow, the burgeoning parsley is a lovely reminder that spring will be here soon.
We like to introduce something new to our Seders each year. For the past few years we’ve been focused on adding content as our children get older and learn
holiday. This year, taking inspiration from these sprouts, I think we’ll focus on themes around Chag HaAviv and talk about rebirth and renewal, even if there is still snow on the ground when we sit down for our Seders

“ We l ike to introduce something new to our Seders each year.
19
Our Shinshiniot, Or and Yuval have been hard at work ,
attending shul weekly, participating in the “Shabbat’s Cool Program” and delivering Dvar Israel from the Bimah. They continue to teach at the Beth David Hebrew School on Mondays and attend some USY programs.
They have shown their professional dancing skills, in the well attended Israeli Zumba class for adults and a dance class for teens from grade 6-12.
Or and Yuval demonstrated baking
Upon their return from visiting family in Israel, they taught Congregants the art of “Krembo” making. ( both popular and delicious events)
They were involved in “Shabbat Unplugged “ helping children make personalized kiddish cups and speaking about various Shabbat practices throughout Israel.
Or and Yuval led an informative lecture on “Why Israel is considered a Start Up Nation ?”, discussing Israeli inventions such as Pill cam, PrimeSense, SCiO and MoBileye.
All those who attended the Tu B’shevat seder enjoyed a delicious dinner and participated in a seder with various fruits, grains and grape juices. We followed the Hagaddah prepared by Yuval and Or. ( Thank you to Adele for helping to coordinate the evening)
This past January, Lisa Feld represented Beth David in choosing the Shinshinim for 2018-2019.
It is my pleasure to introduce Izhar Deutsch and Guli-Avigail Doron. Izhar lives in Midreshet Ben Gurion which is south of Beersheva. , in the middle of the desert. He lives with his parents, brother and two sisters. He enjoys math and science. He plays piano and is involved in Bnai Hamoshavim youth movement, which is similar to the Scouts. Avigail , (“Guli”) lives in a moshav called Mesilat Zion which is located near Beit Shemesh . She lives with her parents and 14 year old brother. Guli has two dogs and a cat. She majors in biology and chemistry and enjoys art and volunteering in an
animal shelter. Guli is also part of the Bnai Hamoshavim Youth movement. They will arrive in Canada in late August.
There is still a lot of time to get to know our present Shinshiniot, Yuval and Or. They are friendly, Intelligent and very hard working.
We look forward to their upcoming events; including a Movie night , , A Program entitled “ Changes in Israel Through Music”, Shakshukah making and a joint Dance Class at Adath Israel with their Shinshinim and Shul members. They will also be involved in the Purim carnival .
It continues to be a wonderful experience working with our Israeli emissaries !
Best wishes,Mindy Simon, Layleader , Beth David Congreagation [email protected]

Your Men’s Club continues to work hard to be a vital piece and ensure
our stature not only within Beth David and our city’s Jewish community but within the general Toronto community as well. While we have initially partnered with the synagogue Chesed Committee to visit shiva houses, we have expanded
committee, by working, in collaboration with the Toronto chapter of National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), to assist in preparing and serving dinner meals to disadvantaged youths in
the core values of your Men’s Club which is to give back and assist the neediest in our community.
by purchasing block of tickets for the synagogue’s recent 50/50 fundraising
with Sisterhood and Club Chaverut, sponsored a full page ad in the souvenir book for Cantor Loomer’s Yom Hazmaut concert. We will continue to support the synagogue in all ways that we can be of
I want to thank our extremely innovative Men’s Club Programming committee, under the chairmanship of
presenting interesting and provocative programs that challenge our minds and entertain our souls. Our Musical program on December 17, 2017, featuring Mikhal Kinkus and Friends, was a resounding success. The large crowd sang along to the songs and danced their way through a very entertaining afternoon. I want to extend a special thank you to Sandy Bokser for helping to arrange this unique and exciting afternoon of song and dance. On January 21, 2018, we had a very special and meaningful program - “The Italian Connection to the Christie Pits Riots”. The program was presented by Pal Di Iulio, a leading member of the Toronto Italian Community. One can tell how successful a program has been through the number of questions from the audience and the number of people who stay after the presentation to converse with the speaker, both of which were prevalent at this program. A special thank you to Lew Lighstone for organizing this very well received event. Our annual World Wide Wrap program, held on February 4, 2018 and organized once again this year by our World Wide Wrap Chairman – Steven
Baker – was very well received by all of the attendees. Rachel Urowitz enlightened the crowd, with her presentation of “Jews and the Roman Emperors”. Those at the presentation were riveted to Rachel’s enthusiastic and informative talk. Due to
years, of our past two World Wide Wrap Chairmen – Aaron Daniels and Steven Baker – attendance at the annual event has been very enthusiastic not only for the presentation but for prayer services preceding. The accompanying photo shows participation in this year’s World Wide Wrap program. On March 11 we had Yehuda (Allen) Azoulay, a leader in the Toronto Sephardic community speak about “Jewish Refugees from Arab Lands”. This very important and relevant event, had a large audience being educated about the plight of those Jews, who for generations have lived in Arab countries, and were and are being persecuted and forced from their homes. The emotional presentation enlightened the attendees to remember that charity begins at home and as such we should be aware and provide assistance to our fellow Jews who desperately require our assistance. I want to thank Steven Baker for bringing to light this unknown but very important phenomenon within our Jewish community.
We have a very entertaining and exciting slate of programs coming up over the next few months. On April 22 the Ontario Jewish Archives will be presenting a special program highlighting the
“History of the Toronto Jewish Community from the 1930’s to present”. As this represents and ties together generations of Toronto Jewish families, we hope to have entire families attend, be educated and entertained at this special event. In May we have a special musical program scheduled which has always been well attended and very entertaining to all who participate. On Sunday June 10, 2018, we will have our annual visit to the Rogers Center to cheer on our Blue Jays, who,
again a contender for the World Series. Tickets for this event are very popular and we have sold out in the past so please contact Peter Reynolds, Richard Long or myself for tickets as early as possible. Details for these events will follow so please watch your weekly Shabbat
Shalom for additional information. Our annual Shoah Candle program
has begun and will continue until Yom Hashoah which begins on the evening of Wednesday April 11, 2018. Shoah candles are now available to everyone and can be obtained from the table kiosk in the synagogue lobby, from Motzei Shabbat to Erev Shabbat each week. Please pick up a Yom Hashoah package and participate in this very distinctive program, which encourages our present and future generations to honour and remember the millions of lives that were tragically destroyed during the Shoah. By remembering and doing our part, we celebrate the lives of our people and memorialize those whose lives were destroyed. A portion of Shoah candle proceeds is given to support Magen David Adom in Israel, which provides emergency medical services and saves lives in Israel every day. I want to extend a special yasher koach to our Shoah Candle Chairman – Richard Long – who has tirelessly worked over the past number of years to reinvigorate this program and maintain its importance and relevance not only within our synagogue but the Toronto Jewish community.
I want to extend a thank you to Helene Jacobs, Robyn Zajac-Cooper, Faye Major Thanuja Perera, Jeev Logan and Ian Borer, for all their assistance in ensuring all our Brotherhood programs have been, are and will continue to be successful.
If you have any suggestions for forthcoming programs, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am pleased to have all of you as members and look forward to seeing you at upcoming Brotherhood events.
On behalf of the Risenman family, I want to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Kosher Pesach.
