Section II: Narrative of Progress

Better Brick Nepal Activities

a. Tripartite agreement

As tripartite agreement are the vital component of the Programme and it is the most important groundwork. As far as in this season altogether 641 tripartite agreement was filled within the six kilns by respective SM of the kiln. Below is the index of the tripartite agreement which is filled this season.

S.N. Industry Total Male Female Molder Transporter Firing Jhokai Bojhai Naike Other

641 tripartite agreement is filled and it was slightly less than expected. Here are some of the reasons due to which tripartite agreement was filled less than expected.

Due to the late fairing on the BJP kiln ., red brick carrier and another working group such as fireman and even molder were haired less then than previous estimation.

Due to early starting of the monsoon this season, production has stopped early and hence new workers did not arrive after the old one run away.

6 | P a g e

b. Kiln wise child labor and how to manage them At the beginning of the season there were three child labor cases in two industries .two of them are of Asmita and one is from Pokhereli Brick Industry. The following are the list of child labor early found in this seasons.

Management

1. Shyam Magar is an unaccompanied child who had come with the Nike Sukhal

Paswan .as he is underage to work as a worker. We tried our best to enroll him

in nearby school but he is not willing to study neither want to enroll in

vocational counseling classes.so he had return back to his source village with the

kiln manager as well as his neighbor Ramhari Shrestha after 15 days and

throughout the process, it is strictly confirmed that he reached his source village

safe and sound.

2. Jagat bdr Pariyar is also an unaccompanied child who had come with his brother

and brother in law and initially work as a molder. After our attempt, he got convinced and enrolled in class 5 of pasale Basic school and with the help of before and after class, he managed to pass out the final exam.

3. Khusnur Khatun, Ruksin Khatun, Umer Khan, Mahanur Khatun &Jayed Khan all are the children of age below 14 are found on the molding process in the social audit of NGF. After that they were enrolled in the vocational counseling education , where they were taught basic numeric and writings in Urdu language by a teacher name mahanur khan in the kiln premises.

c. Construction of ECEC Building

Out of six kilns under the program, only three ECEC were operational .one in ABI of Tanahun district, One in BJP of lamjung district and in Kundur kiln of Gorkha district. one new ECEC building was constructed during this season.

One ECEC center of Asmita kiln was fully constructed as the previous year’s ECEC class was temporary. A total cost of NRS.50, 000 was invested out of which NRS.20, 000 was

supported by the program as ECEC renovation cost, remaining materials and labor cost were provide by the industry. One ECEC facialatator has been

appointed by the program for five months. The ECEC is in

good condition and will be operational for next season.

In Kundur Brick kiln Previous ECEC class was fine so

after the little renovation of the cost at about 20,000Nrs. Such as mattress and wall painting, it is fine to use. Two ECEC facilitators were haired one from the program for 6 months and another from kiln for 4 months. The ECEc is in

good conditoion and will be operational for

next season.

In case of BJP Kiln, as the construction of chimney and dough is currently in progress, kiln owner couldn’t manage to construct a new ECEC class, but they managed a rented room (NRS.1000 Per month) for this purpose. One ECEC

facialatator has been appointed by the program for four months.Kiln owner

Achievements:-

Workers are informed about the Better Brick-Nepal.

Workers were being more familiar with the project staff.

Workers were aware of their health and safety habits.

Workers were able to express their problems and expectations to BBN staffs and kiln

management committee.

The drastic change in behavior and safety concern was seen in workers.

Challenges:-

Workers have big expectations from the program as well as training.

It is difficult to deliver the training as per action plans.

It is hard to manage the time as per workers schedule.

Rushing away of trained workers.

Learning:-

From the previous training we knew that

we should have alternative plans to

deliver the training rather than sticking

to one plan.

Use of informative videos can be more

effective to aware the workers.

This section should basically include following things .Achievement/ progress of M&E

activities a. a. Baseline Survey

In comparison to the tripartite data only 78.32% baseline survey has been completed till date. Following are the reason for the variance.

Almost all of the Baseline form was filled up with the workers. Yet some data has yet to be finalized by the enumerator, thus the variance occurs.

In case of some workers as the tripartite agreement has been filled as soon as the worker

arrive in the kiln. Some of the workers left before the season and some of them also run away before completing baseline form. Hence the number of baseline will be slightly less then tripartite agreement.

The enumerator was provided with a name list of the worker of all six kiln and was supervised many times while collecting the data.

b. IDELA Baseline survey

In total 22 IDELA baseline has been completed within the month of May. IDELA end line

of these children will also be finalized soon. IDELA Baseline was conducted by the

trainers (Sudip sedhain & Manu Sapkota) who has been participated in the MTOT of

IDELA conducted by save the children in Kathmandu. Nearly 35-40 minutes time was

needed to conduct a test for a single child. Test was conducted within the base of 22

activities and using same amount of resources and techniques taught during the MTOT.

Total 20 IDELA test were conducted during the season. Out of which 12 children of age

3.5-5.5 of Kundur brick industry and 8 children of ae 3-5-5.5 were participated on the test.

Challenges:-

1. it’s hard to get the attention of the child for a long time period to conduct test.

2. Most of the indian child encounter difficulties to understand the term used during the

test.

3. Emotional activities such as the understanding of feelings and understanding of the

story was quite difficult for most of the children.

Achievements

1. IDELA Baseline survey provides the exact habit and habitual of a child.

2. It creates a better opportunity for a child to learn.

3. It also point out that what was lacking on our treating methods to them and how an

ECEC teacher can improve her performance to create a better learning

environment.

correct those things in time such as management of the materials. Sanitation health and

hygiene has been improved after the monitoring. Formal monitoring was never conducted

.ECEC was monitored during the various occasions by the GFI Team, IOS Team and stakeholders in each and every kiln.

2. After quality monitoring was done Condition of ECEC has drastically improved as it shows

the loophole to improve such as necessary kitchen supplies, instructional materials, learning

techniques of the students, materials arrangement of the ECEC class and many other thing.

e. Monthly data verification Data were verified each month at the near end of that month before the submission of monthly

data. Data was double checked and also verified through other references, e.g. If a training

data has been received from the field, first it was analyzed through the attendance, minutes

and the cross references of the previous database. If any inconstancy or variance was found during the process, it was cross checked with other means and then the actual data will be

stored. Feedback on the data was incorporated every time the suggestion made.

Heat lost has been significantly high in the kiln and it

has to be fixed.

Although the chimney and dough is based on the zig

zag system, straight Bojhai system has been followed

which has a huge drawback and that needed to be

fixed.

During the making of green brick the brick has been

misshaped by the hard hitting on the fence.it can be

fixed with a simple solution and the owner has agreed

to do so.

Section VI: Issues or Challenges in Programme Implementation and Proposed Solutions to address the Challenges. Key Challenge Proposed Solutions

Discontinuation of the worker of one season to another.

Workers could be encourage to work on same kiln.

Kiln workers were not able to reach better access of healthcare in nearby health agencies.

MOU could be signed with health agencies for better access of health services to kiln workers.

Lack of Textbooks for seasonal BSP students.

Workers and children could be highly encouraged to bring text book & uniform with them, while coming to work on brick kilns.

Hard to manage enough time to conduct training according to module.

Training can be conducted in off hours and individual counseling methods.

Better Brick-Nepal: through the eye of a worker working more

then a decade in a brick kiln.

This is the story of Tulsi & Goma Gurung a hardworking couple running on mid-50 and worker of the Pokhereli brick

industry. And how she sees the Better Brick-Nepal throughout all these years on the brick kiln. Originally from Dhanauri

Dang, one of the districts of far western Terai region. They have been working in the Pokhereli brick kiln for more than 12

years. During all these years they have been working in the Pokhereli brick kiln to fulfill their needs and earn some money to

secure the future of their three kids. And it’s only been six months they have been sifted to their own home from their own

earning after residing 12 years in a jhyauli of Pokhereli Brick Kiln.

Though they were working before the implementation of Better Brick Nepal programme in her word

“After the implementation of BBN Programme in this kiln there has been a drastic change in remuneration, working hours

and record keeping. Before the BBN Programme the kiln mainly depends on human labor and non-mechanized traditional

way of manufacture bricks and moreover, there was no systematic process for tracking the advance, wages and working

hours.

Due to this most of the workers used to be uncertain about their earning and advance deduction. Moreover, a large amount of

Advance and unlimited working hours are the main problems that used to occur those days. After the implementation of

Better Brick-Nepal, there has been a proper agreement between the kiln and the workers as well as the remuneration and

piece rate were fixed before the season. There is also a significant change in the rate of advance taken by the workers as it is

decreasing day by day.”

She further added:-“After the Better Brick-Nepal Programme one of the reasons we feel secure to work here is they form a

grievance report committee, I am also the member of the committee and this is really helpful in addressing inhuman and

bonded treatment. Also, the training they provide has a significant effect on reduction of forced and bonded labor. Moreover,

there has been the provision of labor law in the kiln which address all type of forced and bonded labor situations.”
