Personality Types

There are many things to consider

when you are planning to have a

team building. One of these is the

characteristics of the team

and its members.

There are many things to consider when you are planning to have a team building.

One of these is the characteristics of the team and its

members.

The most famous personality classification is the Briggs Myers definitions of 16 personalities. These

definitions are based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types, and personalities research of Isabell Brigg Myers and K.C Briggs and categorize every person into a 4-letter personality profile.More commonly, a simplified reference is for 4

personality types – A, B, C or D.

What are the traits of each type?

The “A” personality likes to be in charge (of their environment, their job, and their

lives). They are normally not very detail oriented, choosing to delegate details to

others and often in a hurry. They are usually very goal oriented, confident and practical in their solutions. However, arriving at their

solutions and goals will entail a no-nonsense, “bottom-line” approach and they

can lack empathy for others.

A Personality

B Personality

The “B” personality is outgoing, enthusiastic and likes to be around people. They are

good relationship builders and their driving need is for approval. Compliments,

acknowledgement of their achievements, words of admiration and even applause from groups will be the most important

thing you can do for them.

Some of the natural weaknesses that are associated with the “B” personality include being impatient, having a relatively short attention span, and not being very detail

oriented.

C Personality

The “C” personality is detail oriented and likes things that are controlled and stable.

They prefer accuracy, rationality, procedures, protocol and logic. They will also dislike being around people who are

full of “hype”, since they desire facts, accuracy, and logic.

They are careful, resourceful, and above all, excellent thinkers who will look at all

aspects of an issue before taking a stand.

D Personality

The “D” personality takes a slower, easy pace toward things and like to stick with

what they know works. They prefer secure, stable environments and seek longevity on

the job and are very happy doing a repetitive task, day in and day out as the repetition allows them to become very

skilled in what they do.

They seek the respect, sincere admiration, and acceptance of others and are hard

working. They are patient, good listeners and will persevere when all others have

given up. They especially like working in a group or on a team and will be a stabilizing

force within that group or team.

Why is it important to have a mixture of the

personality types in a team?

Whether you have plans for a team building in Adelaide, Melbourne, or Brisbane, it is strongly

recommended that you should know these personality types. It is important to have a mixture of personalities in a team so there

is not a dominant display of a few traits because nothing would be achieved if there

were just the same personality type.

Ideally, you want a combination of Protectors, Creators, Intellectuals and

Visionaries, and Extraverted and Introverted personalities.

Because each personality type has different management styles, learning styles,

difficulties, behavior under stress it is a great opportunity to share knowledge and

improve communication.

Techniques for including all personality types in a learning environment

Mix up your presentation and meeting strategies: send your initial ideas out via

email to give people time to reflect before you get them to discuss

• Balance presentations using texts and visuals

• Use vivid language and tell stories during a talk

• Give people a notepad or a whiteboard to “doodle on”

• For people who talk a lot and dominate discussions (extraverts), incorporate their comments into your presentation in order to take charge and move the conversation

forward• For people who prefer to listen

(intraverts), ask them direct questions once they’ve had a chance to think over the

material presented.
