The Bishop Gorman High School community marked its 57th commencement ceremony and bid farewell to 277 members of the Class of 2014, June 1st at The Orleans Arena. The graduates were joined in their procession by members of the Class of 1964, the
school’s “Golden Graduates” celebrating their 50th high school reunion. Those in attendance were addressed by Valedictorian Rebecca Arteaga and by commencement speaker and 1996 Gorman graduate, Nate Hunterton, U.S. Army Veteran and Territory Manager of Terumo Intervention Systems. Most Rev. Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas, offered the invocation and presented the diplomas to the graduates.
The commencement ceremony capped off two weeks of events in honor of the graduates which began with the traditional senior barbeque, followed by the senior academic awards presentation in which Salutatorian, Megan Gray, addressed her peers.
With a 100% graduation rate and a 96% college bound rate, our seniors have been accepted to colleges and universities all over the United States including: Columbia, Creighton, Duke, Gonzaga, UNLV, UNR, United States Naval Academy and USC just to name a few. The Class of 2014 boasts one National Merit Scholarship Finalist, four National Merit Scholarship Commended Students, three National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar Award winners, three National Achievement Program Awards, 36 athletic scholarships and was awarded over $19 million in scholarships.

Class of 2017 freshman OF THE WEEK
It is time to close out the freshman year of the class of 2017. It has simply flown by and went very well. It is my belief that this class will be highly successful in the years to come. Not only have they excelled academically and athletically, but they have also exhibited
the characteristics we strive for with the PRIDE program: Preparedness, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Effort. I hope their effort continues on to the sophomore year. Congratulations to all of those who were named Freshman of the Week.

The awards presentation for the Cox Stars of Science 2014 Challenge was held on May 3rd. The challenge consisted of demonstrating through a digital story an understading of how science is found everywhere in Southern Nevada. Three of Dr. Mark Hancock’s AP Physics students made it to the final round. “It was a great
event” said Dr. Hancock, “they had all sorts of science demos for the public to look at as well as everything from solar power panels to gliders to desert tortoise and, of course, lots and lots of bugs!”

sCHEDuLE CHANGEs: We are pleased to say it is another record breaking year for enrollment. At this time, there will be NO schedule changes and/or teacher requests! The only time a change will be made is if there is a mistake or you need a level change. For example, if you took a summer school course and it is listed on your fall course list or if you’re dropping a level. The master schedule is complete and the classes are very full.

Counselor’s CornerCollege Queryof the MonthI have finished my junior year. What can I do over the summer to prepare for the college application process?
Applying to college is exciting… and time consuming. Starting early is a wonderful way to make the process enjoyable. Here are some items to review over the summer before your senior year:1 If you have not taken the ACT or SAT test, or plan to take either test again, review the test date options and decide which date(s) work for you.2 If you are travelling over the summer, consider visiting a college or two near your destination. Even if the closest college is one you don’t think you will consider, touring various types of institutions (large, small, private, public) will help you to narrow down your options.3 Reflect on your high school experience thus far and add to or begin your resume. You can update the resume on your Naviance Family Connection page and use this information when completing your college applications.4 Research what majors you want to consider and start to build a list of possible colleges. Naviance Family Connection has tools to help you determine your interests and research your options.5 Start writing your essay. See the Essay section of the College Planner/Calendar to help you jump-start the process!

On May 6th, BGHS students, NHS members, and Mr. Goertemiller participated in Three Square’s “BackPack for Kids” program. The students packed 2,160 bags of weekend food for the kids and also sorted food and packed bags of candy and hygiene products. It was a fun and rewarding experience for all!
Thanks to all who participated, Three Square was thrilled to have such an enthusiastic group!

Way To Go!
At the beginning of the year, Carrie Keller ’15, contacted the Women’s Resource Medical Centers of Southern Nevada to inquire about how she could get involved. She decided to do a Baby Bottle Campaign which she launched at her church. Immediately, the impact that one person can have in making a difference in the lives of others was evident.
Through Carrie’s leadership and determination she placed over 325 bottles and raised a total of $5,155.82 during the two weeks that she promoted the Baby Bottle Campaign. We congratulate Carrie on a fantastic job making an impact in our community by creatively getting involved and giving back.

ActivitiesOur Associated Student Government has been hard at work this year earning the NASC Southern Star Award, the NASC Silver Star Award and the National Gold Council of Excellence Award. Additionally, there were two students who ran for the Nevada Association of Student Councils State Board and were elected to represent student councils from around the state. A big congratulations to John Hatton ’15 for winning

swimmingIn the State Swimming and Diving meet, both the Men’s and Women’s teams qualified for the tournament, which was held at UNLV. In the Women’s State Championship, Bishop Gorman scored 130 points to run away from second-place Palo Verde (91) and win the title. The Gaels won all three relays and three individual events. Led by senior Amy Lubawy ’14, who set the state-record in the 50-yard freestyle (22.98 seconds) and the 100 free (49.82). Teammates Marley Maluafiti ’15 and Catie Miller ’14 finished first and second in the butterfly. It was the Gaels 5th straight title under head coach Ron Aitken.“This is probably as special as the first one. I don’t think people thought we could go five in a row”.

golfThe Bishop Gorman Track and Field team brought home three individual State Championships thanks to the Cunningham family. It was the second year in a row that the Cunningham’s swept the high jump at the state tournament. Randall Cunningham ’14 won his third Nevada State High Jump Championship with a jump of 6-11. His sister, Vashti Cunningham ’16, won the girl’s high jump at 6-1, and was first in the long jump at 18-10 ¼.
Our Men’s Golf team headed by seniors Frank Frisbee ’14 and Bryce McEachern ’14, took honors by shooting the low two-day round of 148. They were joined by Blake taylor ’17, Christian James ’16, owen rosebeck ’16 all of whom shot in the low 70s. Lastly, it was junior Anthony Lalli’s score which allowed the Gaels to soundly defeat Palo Verde with team totals of 373 and 368. Yet, without the competitive support of their teammates Vince Gargano ’15, tyler Martinez ’15, Dominic Grisingher ’15, and skylar Davidson ’16, those six starters wouldn’t have achieved their under-eighty scores.
After their win, Frank Frisbee ’14 commented, “Golf is tough because it’s the one sport where you cannot communicate with your teammates. You’re matched against three kids from three separate schools, and you don’t know if your score is needed to win, or if it’s the one that can be dropped. That makes every shot count!”

D-1 AWArD of exCellenCe The Bishop Gorman Gaels won their first Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s Award of Excellence in Academics, Athletics and Citizenship Championship for the 2013-2014 school year. The NIAA, the non-profit, governing body of high school sports in the Silver State, began the Award program in 2001. Points are awarded to member schools based on their varsity teams’ performances in the classroom, at the athletic venue and in the Citizenship Through Sports program. Each of the three major categories in high school activities – academics, athletics and sportsmanship – are weighted equally, and boys and girls programs are combined in the standings table.
The NIAA will present Bishop Gorman with a championship banner and commemorative trophy at their Fall Meeting. The Award of Excellence is considered to be the top overall sports recognition.

This year’s Annual Wine Tasting event, Passport, took Bishop Gorman families, alumni & friends to the French Riviera! The event was held at the Red Rock Resort poolside, where guests enjoyed delicious drinks, tasty food, great entertainment and of course, some delicious wines! We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather as our emcee, Traci Kesisian, guided us through the evening. The night began with a performance by some of our very own students, Jared De Joya ’14, Jason De Joya ’16, Matthew Bautista ’14, Ralph Mendez ’14 and Marie Owyong ’16.
The entertainment continued through the evening thanks to Missy Cochran Entertainment with a DJ, Sax and Bass player combo while attendees sipped on all the best that Wirtz Beverage had to offer. BGHS Art Students, Chandler oseland ’14, Zach telles ’14, Kaitlyn Wallace ’15 & Jamie Blaase ’14, helped take us to the
streets of France, as they painted postcards for our guests in true
French fashion - wearing striped shirts and berets!
Along with the eighteen wines, five beers and two specialty
cocktails (The Madame Blue and Rose Fraise) there was a wide
variety of French-inspired bites to enjoy! Over 80 amazing auction
items were bid on throughout the week and at the event with our
“text-in” silent auction raising money for our Tuition Assistance
Program.
The night was a big success and we could not have done it without

The 2014-2015 school year will be marked with milestones commemorating our 60th anniversary including launching our new capital campaign, legacy now. Legacy Now is only the second campaign in Bishop Gorman’s 60 year history and is so important for the future of our school. This campaign will ensure that we maintain a strong foundation and that we take the necessary steps to preserve our legacy. The legacy now campaign will
• Offer additional tuition assistance to deserving students• Provide continuing education and necessary resources to our faculty • Fund upcoming capital replacements and repairs
It is our hope that with the support of our community we will be able to raise $10 million in gifts and pledges to fund these critical areas. We are off to a great start thanks to the generosity of the Engelstad Family Foundation and the families of Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. They have agreed to MATCH each gift or pledge made by December 31st dollar for dollar up to $5 million.
You will be hearing more about these efforts in the coming months, it is our intention to invite every member of the Bishop Gorman community to participate in this important endeavor. Thank you in advance for your support.
We couldn’t have made it 60 years without the generosity and support of our community and we hope everyone will join us in celebrating 60 years of excellence in Catholic college-preparatory education in the Las Vegas valley. The festivities will begin on Sunday, September 7th with a very special back to school mass commemorating our first day of school which was September 7, 1954. Mark your calendars and watch the mail for your invitation. As we embark on a historic new school year, we hope you will join us for all of our special events that will celebrate our 60 years of outstanding history and tradition.
