One step at a timeRita came to NCH in May 2014 for the first of her two hip replacement surgeries performed by Dr. Ludkowski. She was grateful to schedule her surgery within three days of her initial appointment.Dr. Ludkowski scheduled the surgery immediately after seeing Rita struggle to walk. “Her hips were so bad she could barely walk,” he says. “Hip surgery operations are often life-changing because the patients can quickly return to a healthy lifestyle.”After the surgery, Rita spent three nights at NCH under the care of orthopedic nurses and therapists before beginning her rehab at home and improving her mobility day by day. Her mother was at her side helping during the recovery process.Watching Rita’s successful recovery prompted Lelia to schedule the first of her hip replacement surgeries just three months after her daughter’s operation.“My hips were getting bad and the doctor diagnosed arthritis,” Lelia says. After X-rays, Lelia learned there was no cartilage remaining in her hip sockets, resulting in bone-on-bone contact in the joints.Dr. Ludkowski says it is more common to see members of the same family who suffer from knee arthritis and

Hip, hip, hip hooray!A mother-daughter bond is often described as one of the most powerful relationships and that bond sometimes influences the lives of mothers and daughters in ways they may not even realize.Take the case of Rita Hall and her mother Lelia McFarland of the Northwest suburbs. Little did they know their bond would be strengthened – and their mobility improved – by taking advantage of NCH’s joint replacement program.Rita had begun to experience difficulty walking in early 2014 and chalked it up to lower back pain. After a visit to a chiropractor didn’t produce any relief, Rita visited her primary care physician who referred her to Philip Ludkowski, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon on staff at NCH.“I spent most of my day bent over and could hardly walk,” Rita recalls. “After I visited Dr. Ludkowski, he said I would need hip replacement surgery because my hip bones were growing inward. I inherited this from my mother.”While Leila watched her daughter battle through the pain, she realized she was probably heading down the same path, too. Arthritis in both hips was beginning to challenge her mobility.

need knee replacement surgery. Rita and Lelia were the exception, he says.“It was unusual that the mother and daughter needed both of their hips replaced at around the same time, despite the difference in their ages,” Dr. Ludkowski says. Supporting each otherAfter Rita recovered from her first operation, she returned to NCH for her second hip replacement surgery last December. “I was begging for an appointment to take care of my next hip,” she says. “I didn’t think twice when I scheduled the surgery on Christmas Eve.”Rita now has no trouble sitting or standing while working at a local pharmacy. For Lelia, she was just one operation away from resuming her two-mile daily walk in the neighborhood. She completed the family hip-surgery cycle this summer when she had her final operation. Her daughter was at her side during the recovery process. For Lelia and Rita, successful hip replacement surgeries at NCH are just the latest experience they have in common as mother and daughter.

The unique District 214 Community Education tradition of having older adults and District 214 high school students come together in a social setting will highlight the month of April with a luau-themed party on Saturday, April 16, at Forest View Educational Center.Tickets for the party are $15 for adults and $5 for District 214 high school students which will include dinner, show and dancing from 6:00-10:30 p.m. It is encouraged to come dressed according to the theme and win a prize! The well-attended party, fondly called the “IG (short for intergenerational) prom” for many years, has become the one social and signature event of Community Education that encourages the young and the young-at-heart to mingle and have fun.“Planning the dinner-dance is such a joy for us,” says Mary Jane Robertson of Mount Prospect and a longtime committee member. “We love to see our high school students have fun with our older adult guests the evening of the party.”The adult volunteers for the Planning Committee include Robertson’s husband Bob, Eloise and Jack DeCarlo of Mount Prospect, Lydia and Richard Brunner of Arlington Heights, Marge and Tom Prohaska of Arlington Heights, CE Dance Instructor Cherie Uricek of Arlington Heights and Helen Scoggins of Barrington. District 214 student volunteers for the committee are recruited in early January through the service learning coordinators from each high school. A portion of the students’ tickets are usually subsidized by their high school. If you know anyone - adult or D214 high school student - who might be interested in joining the Planning Committee, please call 847-718-7799. To buy your tickets, please call the CE Box Office at 847-718-7702.

promotes social connectedness. New relationships form. A perception of interdependence develops, giving one a feeling that autonomy, the freedom to be the authors of our own lives, continues,” said Mary Ann Anichini, a geriatric nurse practitioner and vice president of quality improvement at Presbyterian Homes. The research is quite conclusive. A 2013 study by Andrew Steptoe, an epidemiologist at University College London, found that social isolation raises risk of death among middle-aged or elderly people. In addition, results of an extensive recent study conducted by Carleton University in Canada confirmed that those who feel a sense of purpose and direction in life may indeed live longer, no matter what their age. Conducted over a 14-year span, the study tracked the mental and physical health of 6,100 Americans between the ages of 20 and 75. “Our findings point to the fact that finding a direction for life — and setting overarching goals for what you want to achieve — can help you actually live longer,

Vibrant and active communities are a popular choice among older adults who want to live life to the fullest. Studies have shown that the strong sense of community at such places — staying involved with neighbors, friends and the community at large — actually helps prolong a person’s life. “Living in a community

regardless of when you find your purpose,” said Patrick Hill, lead researcher on the Carleton project, when the study was published in the professional journal Psychological Science.A Life Plan Community creates opportunities for residents to engage, share and learn. A variety of activities are offered,

book discussions, fitness classes and more. “We try to connect people that might enjoy trying something new, or pastimes and experiences that were previously meaningful,” Anichini said. These interests can be diverse, from spirited foreign policy discussions to dancing, or mah jong. And activities are constantly evolving. For example, Presbyterian Homes recently launched a wellness program called “Better Balance with Choices.”“The foundation of this program calls us all to consider how we balance the seven dimensions of wellness — physical, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, environmental and intellectual — in our lives,” Anichini said. “We believe that through this balance comes greater quality of life. The program is designed to be challenging, energizing, and measurable.” Getting everyone involved is an important aspect of the culture. “It’s about living each day with meaning, joy and resilience.”
