Bowling Green State University is in the midst of changing the look of its entire campus. This includes five new buildings that are generating a lot of attention. Several of these buildings are pursuing LEED certification, and the speed in which they were financed and are now being built is unprecedented for projects this size. All buildings are scheduled to open in 2011.

Centennial Hall & Falcon West Hall• 100 days between conception and groundbreaking

• In-unit climate control

• High-speed wired/wireless Internet

• Energy Efficient

• The Centennial Hall will have room for 647 residents, while the Falcon West Hall will have the capacity for 632 students.

McDonald Dining Center• First stand-alone LEED certified dining facility in the nation

• Utilizes energy efficient technology including solar panels on the roof, wind power to charge electric catering vehicles and a rainwater collector for the rooftop garden

• Seating for 700 students

Wolfe Center for the Arts• Designed by the international architectural firm Snohetta, based in Oslo, Norway. The center will be the

first project Snohetta will complete in the United States, before its 9/11 museum in New York City is open.

• A number of green initiatives have included in the building design to reduce energy costs and make use of environmentally friendly paints and finishes.

• 93,000 square feet

• New home of Department of Theatre and Film

• Named the second most notable new performing arts facility in North America in the Winter 2009 edition of Architype Review, an architecture publication that recognizes innovative design.

Stroh Center• State-of-the-art venue for concerts, commencement, lectures and campus and community events.

• Home BGSU Men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball

• Environmentally friendly - designed to achieve LEED certification

In 2009, BGSU created a Residence Life and Dining Services Master plan aimed at providing a better under-graduate student experience-a major goal of the University’s Strategic Plan. The ultimate goal is to develop a campus that feels much more like a series of neighborhoods, with dining centers no more than a five-minute walk from key student areas, housing for upperclassmen and graduate students and landscaping defining the campus boundaries.

This is an exciting time to be at BGSU - and it’s safe to say there are very few academic institutions taking on so many major construction projects at once, while utilizing such unique funding structures and incorporating the latest in green building standards.

The people at BGSU who made this happen are eager to share the strategies used and funding methods that made these projects a reality.

ern. American and European paintings, glass artwork, architectural designs from every era, and even some community art projects for local Toledoans to show off their work. The Art Museum’s Peristyle is one of my favorite places to enjoy the Toledo Symphony or special concerts like Ray Charles with the Toledo Sym-phony, which I was able to enjoy a year before we lost Ray! It was one of the best concerts I have ever experienced. The Toledo Museum of Art’s phone is 419-255-8000.

The Toledo Symphony is another world class attraction of Northwest Ohio! Going to and performing in New York City @ Carnegie Hall is just one of the latest success stories of one of Toledo’s most popular attractions. The orchestra was selected from a pool of 65 applicants as one of only seven orches-tras who performed @ the prestigious new “Spring for Music” festival. Over 1,000 dedicated Toledoans travelled to NYC to give the “hometown” presence to the Toledo musical team.! Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Dvorak, Hummel, and Tchaikovsky, are just a few of the “classics” the Toledo Symphony will perform. Other highlights of 2011 will include The Music of Led Zeppelin, American Voices, The Three Phantoms, Dancing with the Symphony, and one

“Toledo’s“Triple-Dou-ble’ for Quality of Life Points During any Sea-son

Being a 40 year career basketball coach, I know the real value of players who get a triple double in a basketball game. Toledo has many “All Seasonal” attractions to enjoy but I know not of any three that has brought more quality of life popularity points to the one time “Glass Capital of the World”!

The Toledo Museum of Art, is locat-ed around the intersections of Monroe Street and Scottwood Blvd in down-town Toledo. TMA has received global recognition since its inception in 1901 for fantastic displays of a variety of divi-sions of art. Today, the 36 acres and 7 buildings includes over 300,000 exhib-its of artwork from prehistoric to mod-

of the most popular--The Toledo Youth Orchestra! Call 419-246-8000 or www.toledosymphony.com.

The final feature of this “triple-double” for Toledo is not to say the least impor-tant! The 100 year old Toledo Zoo is known for its 9,000 animals representing over 800 species. The yearly extremely popular “Lights Before Christmas” attracts thousands during Winter. Another favor-ite attraction, in my opinion, are the free concerts called “Music Under the Stars” that are available in the Zoo’s Outdoor Amphitheater during the Summer. The Toledo Symphany as well as top American performers show their skills to the people of Toledo. Web sites available are numer-ous for the child or the young at heart to learn about the care and conservation of the zoo’s animals. Special seasonal events occur throughout the year like “Frozen-toezen” in February, “Fischer Price Play Weekend” as Christmas in July, “Teddy Bear Care Day”,and “Feast with the Beasts” are just a few of the special events of 2011. Give the Toledo Zoo a call @ 419-385-5721 or visit their web site: www.toledo-zoo.com

Toledo has a rich history and a great future with attraction like the “triple double”--Toledo is a great place to visit, work, and live!

that brings new life to a great idea---a place to enjoy the view of downtown Toledo from the the eastern shore of the Maumee River. I think it is an incredible sight during any sea-son of the year. Together with the popular Main Street Venture’s Real Seafood and the Italian Zias, the new American Admiral Grill and banquet center will, I am sure continue the attraction of all Toledoans to the East Side of the historic Maumee River.

My experience along the Maumee River dates back to the late 1990’s when I pur-chased my classic 1963 15ft Lyman with a 40 horse Johnson. Now that was some real fun cruising the Maumee River from my pictur-esque dock in Rossford, Ohio, and enjoying the sunsets and the fun of fireworks on the 4th of July and docking @ The Navy Bistro for the Saturday Evening dinners. The most rewarding were the late evening moonlight cruises back to port in Rossford from down-town Toledo. I had one very memorable Woodville Road cruise with my youngest daughter, Erica. We shared many moments discussing family issues and both of our changing lives.

The new Courtyard Docks includes many exciting attractions; An event center and a re-ception hall or seating for up to 350 people, top chefs from around the Toledo/Detroit area, in house catering, a private bar, handi-cap accessible, and great customer service. A new Mexican Restaurant is in the near future to replace the former Tangos. The Ameri-can Admiral’s Grill has a great view of the Maumee River in its dining area with plenty of room for dancing to a top Toledo Blues

A popular local entrepreneur, Tom Cous-ino took the risk and defied all onlook-ers, specialists, and Toledoans by building a “Hot Spot” along the East Side of the Maumee River in downtown Toledo back in late 1990’s--it was called the “East Toledo Docks”. What a beautiful thing for the “step-child of Downtown Toledo”. Yes we did have the popular Toledo Sports Arena(just raized) but most of the cultural and ritzy places were either downtown or in West Toledo. Tom Cousino, an East Side success story with his family’s Earl’s Steakhouse on Woodville Road was an entrepreneural icon in the late 20th Century.

Enter the economic recession of the early years of the 21st Century and you have a vacuum of local financial support. Enter the empathetic Chinese and a few suburban bank entrepreneurs and you have a change

Band or a visiting Motown Sound from De-troit, Michigan. Do not forget you can watch your favorite sporting event on 6 “big screen” tvs--or you can have a quiet intimate dinner far away from the noise and hustle bustle.

Growing up in Northwestern Ohio during the 1960’s one could not help but experience college basketball at any higher degree than on the campus of BGSU and the infamous Anderson Arena! During a recent highly popular attraction, the closing of the “house that roars”(Anderson Arena), I was able to have a post game experience that will go down in my history book as a real “hot ticket”!

Anderson Arena, named after Andy Anderson, who won over 500 games @ BGSU, was well rep-resented by his lovely daughter @ the Sam B’s post game recep-tion. She graced the entire group with her loving smile and true empathy for all the players and visitors. Three of the “top 13” who were honored that day were at one time or another good friends of mine. Nate Thurmond was one of my first college basketball players I met as a young player in 1963 along with Butch Komives one on my basket-

ball idols. On a cold winters night in February of 1963, the 2nd in the nation Loyola of Chicago and would later in March win the NCAA Tournament ti-tle. But in Wood County and Anderson Arena they came in second to the BGSU Falcons led by Thurmond and Komives 92-75. Kaufmans(Sam B’s) in the later years of the 1900’s was the home of

many a great vic-tory celebration.

Over the years, stars such as An-thony Stacy, Anto-nio Daniels, and Jackie Matycka made their own magical moments @ Anderson Arena. Just a few

weeks ago, BG standout Lauren Prochas-ka eclipsed Ms. Motycka to become the school’s all time leading scorer, man or woman. One of the best shooters I have ever played against in high school or college, was Rossford’s(later BGSU’s Mac Player of the year in 1970) Jim Pe-nix. It was great to spend some quality time with Jim and another NLL stand-

out shooter, Jim Bunke (Lake 1967). We were able to enjoy the fine atmosphere, excellent food and spirits of Sam B’s, reminiscing many high school games between Genoa, Lake, and Rossford. Sam B’s “back room” has always been a super place to relax and talk basketball. I was fortunate to be the Head Coach 4 years @ nearby Elmwood High School. Our coaching staff enjoyed many post game evenings in Kaufmann’s (SamB’s) “Back Room”.

“my ‘replacement’ teacher” Valero. There are also many other subs that wanted to remain anonymous--to pro-tect their innocence. There were many Sycamore students who we(plus a very empathetic teaching staff) molded into very productive adults such as, Gram-my Award winner Stacey Mitchart, suc-cessful restauranteurs, The Gregories (Vicky, Tom, Dean, and Terry) and Joseph Smith, the founder of a local successful hot spot, The Silver Spring House. I probably missed scores more!

It is truly amazing how many sports center highlights I could mention---but

here are “my” top 10.(in really no logi-cal sequence); the nights-early morn-ings games between Woodward Hi and The Longview State Psychiatric Hospi-tal, warm evenings eating blackberry pie on Orchard Lane, the walleye and perch hors’-dorves before having Sky-line Chili Dogs and Graeter’s ice cream sandwhiches, brownies and ice cream-ing “with the Wolves”, playing in be-tween @ 4 in the am-- settling up with a check, “Cantorism that ended an ad-ministrator’s future attendance, “Hor-ray for Al-- Horray at last-- Horray for Al he’s a horse’s patoot”, being Blessed by the Pope on the East Side, seeing “Dirty Girty” come up after have a full house in your hand, playing “elbow”, “iron cross”, 222,727, guts, day and night baseball, Indian Poker---I think that is more than ten--I think you get my drift----never a dull moment!

These were the “fabulous five team” founders of one of the most unique “fun loving but very professional” ed-ucational-poker groups in “History”. ment options that keep environmental stewardship in mind. You can choose to manage your waters on your own or hire an experienced, knowledgeable company to assist you. Your pond is a wonderful resource for many activities. If you need help managing it, call us. AQUA DOC will provide a sustainable solution.

Aqua Doc’s Pond Management

Your pond is a product of its water-shed. A watershed is the area of land that the water flows through before set-tling in your pond. By flowing through this area of land, the water picks up nutrients from fertilizers and organic materials which are then carried and deposited in your pond. Changes can be made to modify the pond’s in-flow such as repairing a faulty septic system or building a swale to divert water from pastures or storm sewers.

The most effective way to prevent algae blooms is to stop any organic ma-terial from entering your pond. If your pond is treated as an outdoor waste fa-cility, it will soon smell like one! Grass clippings, leaves, and fertilizers all con-tain nutrients that your pond does not need. The growth of excess aquatic plants and algae is a symptom of your pond “loading up” with abundant nu-trients. The accumulation of nutrients in the pond can be referred to as eutro-phication or hypereutrophication.

There are lake and pond manage-

This is an incredible place hidden in the bougainvillea trees of Islmorada Florida. I drove past this piece of paradise the last 5 years and did not know this beautiful resort existed---I think it was purposely hidden in the tropi-cal plants on the Atlantic side of Highway I @ the 86 mile marker. Upon entering the quaint office nestled in the palm trees and tropical island sand surrounding the entire complex, you feel the “laid back” easy going atmos-phere of the Florida Keys! The Moorings is an 18 acre property harboring 18 cottages and homes on what was once a coconut planta-tion. Ranging from one to three bedrooms, each residence is self-sufficient with its own well-equipped kitchen, television, telephone, and, in most cases , a washer and dryer.

A short walk from your doorstep lies 1,100 feet of crystalline white sand--one of the larg-est and most beautiful private beaches in

the Florida Keys. From the beach you can experi-ence the thrill of wind surfing or the serenity of kay-aking across the aquamarine wa-ters of the Atlantic. While watching these waters you may catch a glimpse of the elusive gray ghost, known as the Bonefish, trailing across the flats tempting you to cast a fly his way.”

Speaking of fishing--Islamorada is the Sportfishing Capital of the World and it of-fers two distinctly different types of fishing. If it is the Bonefish or Tarpon you are after, the back country or Gulf is for you. If you are looking for the Sailfish, Marlin, or perhaps Dolphin(Mahi-Mahi), deep sea fishing of the Atlantic may be your choice. Both variations are very easy to charter or reach by your own boat.

If you prefer to be in the water rather than cruising on top of it, this Plantation Key region is full of quality diving and snorkeling. Of-fering everything from shallow or mid-range reefs to steep walls and numerous wrecks, you are in the heart of deep sea adventure. A 25

meter pool will cool you off on hot days and a beautiful tennis court will get your cardio-vascular system tuned! Enjoy The Island Body & Sol Spa after a busy day on the beach or on the court. Amy’s Yoga will give you some meditation for your body and mind. Morada Bay casual bar and cafe offers both indoor and beachside cocktails across Highway I along with The Green Flash Lounge and Pierres high end restaurant.

Life at The Moorings is quiet and simple. You can do a lot or you may choose noth-ing at all. Personal housekeeping can be ar-ranged through our office for a nominal fee. Room service is not available. By staying at The Moorings, you can receive an honest taste of what life is about in the laid-back American Carribbean Islands called the Florida Keys. The Mooring is located on 123 Beach Road, Islamorada, Fl. 33036.

A brief ride from downtown Toledo and Bowling Green will provide the visitor with some excellent food for consumption and fine historical nourishment for one’s pioneer spirit thirst. Do you think history is dull--then you have not visited Sauder Village in Northwest Ohio. Visit with costumed guides explaining how families lived 100 years ago. Marvel at unique craftsmen’s skill and crea-tivity in glass, metal, wood, fabric, and clay. Enjoy homemade scrumtpious goodies made on the premises right in front of your eyes. Enjoy the warmth of genuine home-town hospitality which leads to just plain and simple fun for every member of the family. I remember my first taste of Sauder Village as a teenager eager to find meaning of my historical knowledge of Ohio. I wanted to experience the life in the Black Swamp re-gion of my birth and boy did I learn alot. In fact it was one of the reasons I pursued his-

tory and became a doctorial student @ The Uni-versity of Cincinnati back in the 1970’s. Sauder gave me one of my first foundations for the love of history---verbal and visual---not just from the book!!!

The most difficult question to answer when you arrive @ Sauder--Just where do I start? I would choose to check in at the very least, overnight, either @ the beautiful Sauder Inn or the incred-ible campground. Whether your favorite thing to do is eating, shopping or learning, Sauder Village is the place to be.

Learning History would be my choice first! The historic rememberances of the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War is one of the highlights of this years headline attractions. A new Pioneer Settlement (1834-1890) is another 2011 attrac-tion for the history buffs!

The Barn Restaurant, The village Cafe, The Ice Cream Parlor, Sweet Shops, and banquet facility are available for your convenience. There are also many local restaurants around Archbold, Bryan, and Toledo to enjoy Northwestern Ohio food. Actually Indiana Amish Country is only an hour away around Shipshewana and Fort Wayne.

Shopping opportunities include the popular Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop, and the Sauder Village Gift Shop. Laubers General Store and The

Village Trader will give you a glimpse of shop-ping a century ago in Pioneer Ohio. Experi-ence the professional craftsmen in action will intrigue your curiosity in the blowing of glass, woodworking of carpenters, and even iron works creations. How about watching a skilled professional shod a horse or weave a quilt? The Sauder Store and Outlet will give you an op-portunity to purchase just about anything you can think that is handmade!!! Seasonal classes in basket making, quilting, knitting, rug hook-ing, and the creation of dolls and teddy bears will simply mystify your mind. Observing the woodcarvers and their meticulous skills are one of my favorite Sauder pasttimes!

Field trips by school children are a common occurrance and The Sauder Village in Your Classroom is a special feature of this incredible attraction. Be sure you call @ 800-590-9755 or connect to their web site, www.saudervillage.com! Wow--what a place to visit!
