Meage om e Psident Board of Directo and Executive Director

This bi-Annual Report gives us the perfect opportunity to not only look back over the past twoyears and celebrate our accomplishments once again, but it is also a chance to look toward thefuture. Thanks to the leadership, dedication, and support of Keith Fell, immediate past Boardpresident and Grace G. Lo Grande, retired executive director, Little Flower is poised to moveforward and embrace new leadership and new opportunities. We have accomplished much, butthere is still so much more we plan to do. Your continued encouragement and investment is acritical element in moving forward.

Thank you to our Board for their guidance and governance, the staff who have proven theirdedication, the volunteers who have given their time, and the community for their friendship andunderstanding. And thank you to all of our donors who continue to provide much neededfinancial support to Little Flower so that we can continue to make a difference in the lives ofthose we serve.

You have delivered new toys and gifts for the hundreds of children and adults in our care. Youjoined us in celebrating, commemorating and honoring our mission and history, all the whilelooking ahead. And you have provided critical funds so that we can keep up with the changingneeds of our clients.

But most of all you gave us your trust. You have entrusted your confidence, your hopes andbeliefs in Little Flower’s leadership and those working in the trenches 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek. Knowing that we have your trust enables us to achieve success child by child, family byfamily, individual by individual. It gives us the foundation to plan for the future and seek theopportunities that present themselves and to create additional opportunities of our own design.

We look forward to a productive and fruitful future as your support enables us to achieve somuch more in the years ahead.

Dedication CeremonyLittle Flower held a dedication ceremony onNovember 1, 2014 to officially name theWading River campus the Monsignor John T.Fagan Campus.

The celebration included a dedication withdistinguished guests including: SenatorKenneth P. LaValle and Riverhead TownCouncil member John Dunleavy. Everyonewas invited to stay and attend mass in thecampus chapel in honor of Little Flower’shistory and in memory of those who helpedpave the way for our success.

“This is a special day in Little Flower history—honoring one of our greater leaders, Father John, who wasinspired by our founder, Msgr. Bernard Quinn; both men worked for change in the lives of the most vulnerablemembers of society. It is even more special because we are joined by several generations of the Fagan familyin celebrating the life and work of one of their own” said previous Executive Director, Grace G. Lo Grande.

Sanctuary Is He! How Are You Feeling Today? What is Your Goal for Today? Who Can You Ask For Help?

These three questions are heard during every community meeting throughout Little Flower on a dailybasis. Whether a department staff meeting or a cottage meeting with staff and youth at the ResidentialTreatment Center, everyone is asking these questions in an effort to create a safe and inviting atmosphereof communication and sharing, all the while developing skills of containing intense feelings and provocativeissues that need individual attention and privacy.

Community meetings are the cornerstone of Sanctuary – a trauma informed organizational change modelfocusing on trauma recovery and safety for those in our care and our staff. The Sanctuary model is traumainformed instead of trauma reactive – it looks at ‘what has happened’ to a person, not ‘what is wrong withthem.’ The Community meeting is just one item of the Sanctuary Tool Kit, a set of practical and simpleinterventions that reinforce the language and philosophy of the model.

Little Flower is excited to undertake thisorganizational shift toward the SanctuaryModel. We believe the model’s emphasis oncare for the client and the worker will leadto better outcomes for those we serve andthe Little Flower community at large.

Youth In e CitPparing Youth for Adulthd Career Day

Recognizing the special challenges young adults in fostercare face as they navigate the difficult transition fromadolescence to adulthood, Little Flower offers the PreparingYouth for Adulthood Program (PYA), which consists ofprograms and opportunities for achieving positive outcomesfor our foster youth. PYA offers workshops on topics such ashousehold and money management, bills, leases, healthinsurance, college and workforce prep. To further the career

readiness aspect of PYA, Little Flower developed Exploring Your Future, which provides the opportunityfor youth to participate in internships, career fairs, vocational training, and other activities aimed atsupporting them in acquiring marketable skills and searching for full-time and part-time positions.

Furthering the career readiness objective, Little Flower launchedthe annual Exploring Your Future Career Day in November 2013.Representatives from a variety of professions were invited toparticipate in a panel discussing their position and the path theytook to get where they are today. Youth have the opportunity toengage with the speakers one-on-one to dig deeper and havequestions answered.

The 2013 and 2014 Career Days were held at St. Francis College andwere sponsored by Juice Pharma. Little Flower was fortunate towelcome representatives from fields such as: advertising, banking, communications, courier services, culinary, education, health andwellness, human services, information technology, insurance, medical, law enforcement, legal, the military, sanitation and television. We werehonored to have board member Len Scioscia present at the 2014Career Day as he guided the youth through the world of insurance!

We look forward to continuing to offer other unique opportunities to our youth, such as Career Day, sothat they have a fighting chance to develop the resiliency, self-reliance and self-confidence needed tosucceed once they age out of care.

Brooklyn and Queens Computer Labs In the early part of 2015, Little Flower unveiled two computerlabs at its Queens and Brooklyn offices for the foster youthpopulation.

The labs were developed with the support of long-time donors, the Dreams R Us Foundation so that foster youth may researchtraining and program opportunities, apply for jobs and internships on-line,

complete school applications, apply for financial aid, practice resume writing, and become familiar withcomputer software. Some may even be able to take on-line courses toward a degree or certificateprograms. Youth also have access to a library of study guides for various exams (Regents, SAT, GED),college aids, resume writing workbooks and more.

“We are very excited to have the resource lab up and running and thrilled to be able to provide our youngadults with an additional outlet to help them in their journey to completing their education as well assecuring positions in the workforce. We are extremely grateful to the Dreams R Us Foundation for theircontinued support and for partnering with us as we work to provide many tools to our youth so that theymay lead fulfilling and productive lives” said previous Executive Director, Grace G. Lo Grande.

Youth Spotlight Because of the hardships the youth in our programsface, it is inspiring and monumental when one ofthem is recognized and honored for going above andbeyond to help their peers. Little Flower’s ownAnthony T. won the 2014 Administration forChildren’s Services LGBTQ & Ally Award!

Anthony was placed into care when he was 14 years old after enduring physical and mental abuse athome. He’s had many ups and downs during his time in foster care and once harbored suicidal thoughts, which landed him in Brunswick Hall, a psychiatric hospital, for eight months and two other facilitiesthereafter. During his time at these facilities he developed his special skill of writing—some of which havebeen very successful and featured in the Huffington Post, NY Times and REPRESENT magazine. Eventually,Anthony found stable ground when he moved into a kinship foster home with his aunt and cousins.

Two years ago, Anthony discovered the Little Flower LGBTQ Teen Group and has been a core member andleader in the group ever since. Staff witnessed the impact Anthony made on the lives of other young adultsin group. He encouraged teens to stay and complete high school, which he was able to do himself afterthoughts of transferring or dropping out, because of the support he received from the group. Anthony helpedmembers overcome their own challenges by sharing his experiences in dealing with bullying. He has beenhelpful in creating an environment for his peers to learn of opportunities, resources and information to helptransition out of care as well as learn how to be their own self-advocate. Anthony recently aged out of careand is excelling in college all the while still finding time to join the group during meetings and offer help.

Anthony said he was both surprised and excited when he heard the news of being selected as the recipientof the LGBTQ & Ally Award. Anthony has demonstrated his commitment to safety and well-being of hispeers as well as made a tangible impact by supporting his fellow foster youth!

Campus HapningsLittle Flower’s On HouseIn July 2013, Little Flower hosted an Open House on the Wading RiverCampus, opening its doors to the surrounding community to come andreacquaint themselves with the campus, staff and clients.

The event, sponsored by The James A. Cullen Memorial Fund and MarcusStinchi, welcomed many visitors, including Legislator Sarah Anker of theSixth Legislative District, alumnus Philip Morrow and board members TomCullen and Barbara Kullen.

Guests were able to take tours, led by dedicated andknowledgeable staff, to the different parts of campus. They were able to see firsthand where and how thechildren lived and the types of treatments andservices the children received as well as projectsthey participated in, such as the garden and CampusCafé.

It was a great afternoon getting to know our neighbors and sharing the work that has been done on thecampus for over 85 years!

Little Flower Ons New Day Halitation Program The Little Flower Day Habilitation Program opened its doors April 7, 2014 to 15individuals living at home or in a certified Individual Residential Alternative (IRA)and/or Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) in need of an appropriate day program. Many are recent graduates from the Board of Education and in some cases havebeen without a structured day program for one to two years. These individualshave profound-moderate range of intellectual functioning with behavioral andmedical concerns. Several are non-ambulatory and require total support withall activities of daily living.

The program assists families who have been forced toadjust their lives to remain home with their child and

addresses the lack of services on the East End and North Shore of Long Islandand the lack of appropriate programs to meet the medical and behaviorchallenges of these individuals.

Support from Decision Women in Commerce and the Professions, Inc. has allowedus to purchase sensory and tactile learning tools for use by staff to develop skillsand abilities among the participants.

We are proud and excited to welcome this new group to the campus and the LittleFlower family!

Junior Iron efLittle Flower takes a therapeutic approach to the culinary arts and strives to provide thosein our care the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to make it on their own. For thesegrowing adolescents, learning culinary arts is more than fun—it is a skill that will empowerthem as they transition to independent living by teaching valuable life skills, fostering self-esteem and confidence as well as introducing basic food and nutrition skills.

Students participating in Little Flower’s Culinary Arts programtook their training and skills a step further by participating inthe Annual Long Island Junior Iron Chef competition. LittleFlower’s team, the Tiger Lilies, competed in the 2014 and 2015competitions and both years walked away winners.

The teams developed their recipes through testing, tasting andtweaking. Not only did they practice the technical aspects but

they also worked with their team supervisor, Jennifer Quinlan, on presentation, properculinary terminology and how to represent themselves and talk to the judges.

The first year of the competition, the Tiger Lilies team consisted of Elijah and Naomi whoserved the judges Greek Sliders with Kale and Goat Cheese Pasta Salad. Their creationearned Elijah and Naomi 3rd place from among ten other local high school teams.

Last year, the Tiger Lilies sent Russell and Samantha to compete in the Middle Schoolportion of the competition and they were required to create a vegetarian breakfast dish. Theduo created a Harvest Hash – a sweet potato and chickpea hash, topped with a poached

egg, tortilla with a Sriracha cream sauce. Once again, the Tiger Lilies came out winners, taking 2nd place. Additionally, they were the only team that year to win a second award as the recipients of the Public Presentation Award foroutstanding presentation and professionalism.

We look forward to tasting the delicious creations of future competitions!

Bishop DiMarzio Visits e CampusLittle Flower was honored by a visit fromBishop Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of theBrooklyn Diocese at our Monsignor JohnT. Fagan campus in early 2015 as part ofthe On the Road with Bishop DiMarzio TV series!

Our youth from the Culinary Café provided a five course lunch for hisExcellency and were able to spend some time with him. That was

followed by a tour of the campus including mass at the Msgr. BernardQuinn Chapel, which was very fitting as Bishop DiMazrio is leading thecause for canonization for our founder, Msgr. Quinn.

We thank him for spending the day with us reveling in our long and proudhistory and experiencing our accomplishments of today!

Our StaffLittle Flower Staff Recognized atC OF F CA Brooklyn Cas AwardsLast April, two of Little Flower’s very own, Foster Care Supervisor Yardley JeanCalixte, LMSW (now the Director of Quality Improvement-Family Care) andCaseworker Anne Psolka-Green received recognition for their outstandingcommitment and dedication to the children in their care!

The Brooklyn Cares Awards, coordinated by the Council of Family and Child Caring Agencies (COFCCA)and the Brooklyn Borough President, Eric Adams, identified Brooklyn based child welfare agencies andtheir staff for their hard work, dedication and for going above and beyond for children in need.

Ms. Jean-Calixte joined the Little Flower family in 2005. Shebegan her career as a Case Planner and then became a FosterCare Supervisor. As such, her duties included supervision of caseplanners, case planning services for children placed in foster careand working with staff to identify resources for the safety and well-being of the children and families in her care as well as thedevelopment of her staff. Ms. Jean-Calixte chose Social Work asa career because she wanted to be an advocate for children andgive a voice to those who are otherwise marginalized.

Anne Psolka-Green is relatively new to the field of socialwork, having started at Little Flower less than two years ago.During that time she has had the opportunity to learn fromher supervisors, peers and those she serves. She isresponsible for helping the children and families in her careto cope with problems they are facing while ensuring thechild is safe and secure.

Sister Madeline Little Flower Executive Director Corinne Hammons along with membersof the Senior Executive Council presented Sister Madeline Kanich with aProclamation for 50 years of dedicated service to the children andfamilies in our care. Sr. Madeline, a member of the Sisters of the HolyFamily of Nazareth, has lived and worked on the Wading River Campusfor that entire time, teaching, leading, guiding and caring for the children.

The celebration of Sr. Madeline’s life continued at a luncheon served by youth in the Culinary Arts Program.Staff were joined by Rev. John Barrett, Pastor of St. John the Baptist in Wading River, Little Flower Boardmember Barbara Kullen and several retirees to celebrate Sr. Madeline’s accomplishments, share storiesand wish her well on her retirement.

As the luncheon drew to a close the guests were treated to a special performance of “This Little Light ofMine” by Little Flower youth. A fitting close to a life of service enabling the "lights" of so many LittleFlower youngsters to shine over the long years of her career.
