While the city of Athens has cleared out for spring break,we at Bulldawg Illustrated Athens have been hard at work pro-ducing our fifth issue of our inaugural year.
Back in early January, editor Ryan Scates and I discussedhow we would navigate this time frame. Should we skip a week?Or should we continue with our every other week publicationcycle?
The consensus was to forge ahead because while manyfolks are frolicking in the sun this week, the majority of our Geor-gia athletes have a full week of competition. If you don’t believeme, then please go to our calendar on page 11. See I told you. Those events are a great opportunity to support our athletes ifyou find yourself looking for something to do. But come to thinkof it, that can be said year round.
I think I can speak for everyone involved in putting outour publication when I say the biggest highlight has been im-mersing ourselves into each UGA sports program. We now havean even larger appreciation for the hard work and commitmentit takes to perform at the Division 1 NCAA level.
And because of that, the victories are even sweeter and thelosses are oh so bitter. The last few weeks of UGA athletics havehad a little of both.
Jay Clark and the Gym Dogs had a huge victory againstUCLA and are coming together nicely as post-season play ap-proaches. The UGA softball team has picked up right where itleft off last season posting several victories including three no-hit-ters over one weekend. That is sick and by all means, sick ismeant to be good in this context.
Our tennis and golf teams are performing at great levelsand will certainly be in the mix to win a title when tournamentplay occurs in the coming months. The Equestrian team had arare loss at Auburn this past weekend, but then bounced back24 hours later to beat No. 6 Kansas State. And Georgia’s trackteam has been getting record-breaking performances from ath-letes like Torrin Lawrence and Tommy Barrineau.
Of course, there have been struggles as the DiamondDawgs ran into a Florida State buzz saw this past weekend in Tal-lahassee. It appears longtime Seminole skipper Mike Martin hasone of his best teams ever. However I have all confidence thatGeorgia’s headman, David Perno, will use the tough weekend tohelp mold his team with SEC play cranking up in the comingweeks.
And on the hardwood, I would guess both Andy Landersand Mark Fox are a bit frustrated with their squad’s last per-formances. Yes there have been some bright spots over the lastfew weeks, but inconsistent play led to the Lady Dawgs exitingthe SEC tournament in round two and the Hoop Dawgs roadloss at LSU.
However that is the beauty of March Madness, where get-ting hot at the right time can lead to dreamy circumstances.
For the Hoop Dawgs, any hopes of making the NCAA orNIT tournament hinges on a deep run in the SEC tournamentthat begins on Thursday in Nashville (tournament bracket onpage 7). And when I say a deep run, I’m talking about makingit to The Finals. A win there puts them in the Big Dance. A Fi-nals’ loss might still be enough to earn an NIT invitation.
For Lander’s Lady Dogs, as Jeff Dantzler points out on page4 anything is possible once the NCAA tournament begins in afew weeks. I’m betting on a deep run and perhaps a trip to theFinal Four.
For now, we will bid you farewell, but hope you enjoy thisissue and particularly our cover. No matter what the UGA sport, there’s nothing like beating Florida and saying Later Gator!
I have a confession to make. Earlier this week, when traveling through
Florida, I stopped with my girlfriend and vis-ited the University of Florida.
Yes, this paper is dedicated to covering allthe spring semester sports at UGA, but it’s hardto visit an SEC rival school without dreamingeven a little about football.
You see, I have this thing for collegetowns. Growing up, the highlights of the yearwere getting to visit places like Athens,Knoxville, Auburn and Tuscaloosa for big SECfootball games. I would relish every second ofthe trip, from spotting car flags headed downthe interstate, listening to the radio call inshows (…I’ll hang up now and listen to yourcomments.), and of course, experiencing whata day in the life is like in the world of a Tiger,Rebel, err…Crimson Tide person, and so on.Naturally, the pageantry and local color sur-rounding the game became as memorable asthe game itself.
Now, while I love the Georgia-Florida foot-ball experience as much as anyone, I couldn’thelp but visit Gainesville just to walk aroundcampus and imagine in my mind’s eye whattheir swampy campus would look like once in-vaded with a red and black contingent. With acamera in one arm and a lovely Georgia co-edin the other, I set off to explore the palm treedotted, jean shorts Mecca of the south.
We ate at a restaurant called The Swamp, where we sent an orange and blue coloredplate of chips and salsa back to the kitchenand barked with some fellow Dawgs whilemaking a pit stop en route to sunny SouthFlorida.
Next, we meandered through the live oaksand shade spots to the veritable Death Star ofthe SEC, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Being astate-owned property, the stadium was open toany visitor who felt like walking in. I downeda bottle of Pepto-Bismol before venturing intoThe Swamp. We cruised up and down thebleachers, got some pictures defacing the infa-mous “Welcome to the Swamp” sign in the cor-ner of the stadium and did our best renditionof the “Trinton Sturdivant Shuffle” in the end-zone before headed back to I-75.
Cruising down the interstate after ourcampus visit, my girlfriend Kiel and I began tocompare Gainesville to our own college vibe inAthens.
We started with the downtown scene. Howdid Gainesville compare with Athens’ ClaytonStreet? Hmmm…ok, well what did UF havethat was similar to UGA’s North Campus? Didthey have anything similar to the Arch, FivePoints, or even Sanford Stadium?
It didn’t take long to realize that when itcomes to Athens and other college towns, therereally is no comparison.

Lady Dogs have potential for run
Legendary Hall of Fame coachAndy Landers signed a contract ex-tension through 2014 prior to thetipoff to the 2009-10 campaign. Hisgoal is to get Georgia back to where itwas, amongst the truly elite programsin women’s collegiate basketball.
“There are three places for a pro-gram, and unless you’re number oneyou don’t want to be in the same spotin all of them,” said Landers, “whereyou’ve been, where you are andwhere you’re going.”
In the two previous years, Geor-gia had been good – losing in the sec-ond and first rounds respectively ofthe NCAA tournaments of ’08 and ’09– but not excellent like the previousfive years when the Lady Bulldogs ad-vanced to at least the Sweet 16, orgreat like in the magical Final Fourruns of the 1980s and ‘90s.
Landers retooled his coachingstaff, and Georgia’s last two recruitingclasses have both been rankedamongst the nation’s top ten, includ-ing this season’s crop of six freshmenthat fill out of over half of the 11-player roster.
Georgia roared out of the gates toa perfect 16-0 record, the best startin the storied history of the program. The high point of the season came onJanuary 21st, as the eighth-rankedLady Bulldogs toppled No. 3 Ten-nessee 53-50 before a raucous Stege-man Coliseum crowd to vault intosole possession of first place in therugged Southeastern Conference.Three days later, the Lady Dogs hada late lead get away, and fell at hometo Ole Miss. Had Georgia won thatSunday afternoon, its national rank-ing would have likely been No. 4 orNo. 5.
Instead, it was the start of painfulstretch in which Georgia lost six of
eight games to fall into the middle ofthe league’s pack.
Georgia had shown that it couldcompete with and defeat the best ofthe best. The Lady Bulldogs haveslain, along with Tennessee, tradi-tional national powers Oklahoma,Rutgers and Virginia. But the losingspell showed that it is still a work inprogress.
To close out the regular season, the Lady Dogs returned to their firsthalf of the season form, winning by16 at South Carolina and toppingArkansas by 21 in the final homegame for seniors Angel Robinson andAshley Houts, who is one of the mostpopular and decorated players inschool history, and amongst thetoughest and grittiest competitors inGeorgia athletic annals.
However, the slump knockedGeorgia out of a first round bye forthe SEC Tournament. The Lady Dogswon a seven point thriller over Ala-bama in the first round, but fell torested Mississippi State in the sec-ond, losing for the first time in 20games in which Georgia led at thehalf.
It will be a full two weeks untilthe Lady Dogs again take the hard-wood in the NCAA Tournament. This will give Houts, who has battleda sprained left ankle, time to heal andfor the Lady Dogs to dial back in andrecapture the magic of the first half ofthe season.
First comes selection Monday, when Georgia will be bound for theNCAA Tournament for the 27th timein 29 years – the second best total ofany program in the country.
But then what? With this team, anything is pos-
sible, from a first round loss to a deeprun through March.

HoopDAWGS
The 2009-2010 Georgia Men’s Basketball seasonbrought a lot of things to Stegeman that had not beenseen in a while. After this team stumbled early to thelowly Wofford terriers, who would have thought thaton Senior Night scalpers would be selling tickets forupwards of $80 a pop to see the Hoop Dawgs take onKentucky? Honestly, I don’t know if scalpers wereasking that much for tickets for the Georgia-Ken-tucky football matchup, which also fell on a SeniorNight.
Yes, in 2010 Georgia basketball began to bringsome sparkle back to old Stegeman Coliseum. Post-ing a 13-4 home record, the Dawgs gave home fansreason to cheer even when facing the tallest of odds. When Tennessee came to town hot off of beating #1Kansas, the UnderDawgs stopped them cold in theirtracks. When Florida was seeking a return to theNCAA Tournament, Fox’s gritty squad hunkereddown and turned the Gators back south. While thewins were great, my favorite thing to see return toStegeman was the slam-dunk.
Now, when I talk about slam-dunks, I’m nottalking about a mere, tip-in, quick rebound, easy twopointer. I’m talking about the genuine, fast break, at-titude-soaked, crowd-electrifying, adrenaline pump-ing jams that were shaking backboards across theSEC when Fox’s Hoop Dawgs came to town. Below Ihave highlighted my three favorite jams from the reg-ular season. Here is to hoping there is plenty more tocome in the SEC Tournament.
1. Travis Leslie Fast-Break Windmill Jamagainst Tennessee
In the first sold-out Hoop Dawgs game since2007, the Georgia crowd was hungry for a big winover the big orange. After a misguided Tennesseepass Travis Leslie came up with a big steal. Whathappened next seemed to transpire in slow motion.Unguarded and all alone approaching the Tennesseebasket, Leslie launched a reverse-cradle rim rattlerthat even had the press box howling.
2. Travis Leslie Gets Serious Air at Rupp ArenaYes, This dunk came amid a loss, but Georgia put
up a regal effort in a close game at Rupp Arena backin January. Who can forget seeing Leslie literally flyacross that blue paint on Sports Center’s Top Ten?After beating Tech a week earlier, the dunk was asure sign of this team’s refusal to lie down and playdoormat to the SEC East.
3. Trey Thompkins’ Two-Hander against GeorgiaTech.
It’s always good to Beat Tech. With a stiff two-handed jam late in the second half, Trey Thompkinsshowed the team from the North Avenue TradeSchool exactly what school calls the shots in thisstate.

JD’s 2010 SEC previewFielding a consistently good college
baseball team is extremely difficult. First, there is the matter of having only 11.7scholarships. Then there is the fight againstthe Major League Baseball draft when itcomes to keeping rising seniors and in-coming freshmen after winning recruitingbattles against rival schools.
When injuries come, well, you can dothe math on that.
Georgia has been bitten badly by theinjury bug and the Bulldogs are trying tokeep their heads above water until every-one gets back. This team’s best days aredefinitely ahead of it.
But to give you an idea of what Geor-gia has had to do this year on the infield,Georgia had started four first basementhrough the first nine games of the season,as Chase Davidson was battling an injury. At second base, Todd Hankins has beenstarting. In the fall, the freshman was thirdstring behind injured Levi Hyams andChance Veazey, the incredibly brave andcourageous freshman who suffered a seri-ous, life-altering injury in a tragic accident. At shortstop, star freshman Kyle Farmer, who is batting .458, suffered a broken handand is out for three to six weeks. Hyams, who started at short last year, has beenhurt, so the Bulldogs moved freshman All-American third baseman Colby May toshort in the meantime. Outfielder KevinRuiz, who has also played first, has playedthird along with catcher Christian Glisson.
And Georgia’s lineup, on the strengthof two outstanding recruiting classes, fea-tures all freshmen and sophomores – withsenior reserve Robbie O’Bryan the loneupper-class position player.
So as the Bulldogs battle through atypically tough slate – in the incredibleDavid Perno era which has featured threeCollege World Series trips and a pair ofSoutheastern Conference titles, Georgia’sstrength of schedule has almost annuallybeen ranked in the nation’s top five – theBulldogs are hopefully getting healthy withthe always brutal SEC grind looming.
Here’s what Georgia will see aroundthe league, starting Alabama, which de-feated the Bulldogs in a non-conferencegame on March 3rd in Suburban Birming-ham’s Hoover, Ala., site of the SEC tourna-ment, which features the league’s top eightteams.
Alabama: The one team Georgia does-n’t play in an SEC series. For some reason, league schools play 10 conference series. Not all 11, and not a trimmed back eight ornine. Before the game in Hoover, first yearBama coach Mitch Gaspard, a longtimehighly respected assistant, presented Pernowith a check for over $1,000 dollars. InAlabama’s road game the previous Friday
at South Alabama, all of the Crimson Tideplayers gave their meal money, and thattotal was matched by the coaches, to thefoundation for Chance Veazey. Bamaboasts a typically strong lineup which willhave them in contention for the SEC title.Centerfielder Taylor Dugas is one of theleague’s top leadoff men, and the infield isdynamite, featuring the third year keystoneduo of shortstop Josh Rutledge and RossWilson. First baseman Clay Jones hadrapped out four homers and 14 RBI’s inBama’s first six games.
Ace Pitchers: Georgia’s Friday night(the SEC plays three game Series, on Fri-day, Saturday and Sunday’s, so that firstgame is obviously a critical tone-setter)starter Justin Grimm has outstanding stuff. And he’ll have to be at his best this season,as the league features an imposing array ofhurlers. As many as five SEC pitchers haveprojected as first round picks in June’s draft. That doesn’t count Kentucky’s James Pax-ton, a first rounder a year ago, who is cur-rently ineligible while dealing with NCAAissues regarding issues with an agent.
March 19-21 in AthensAuburn: It’s been a tough decade for
Auburn, which is on its third head coachsince the retirement of longtime standoutchief Hal Baird. John Pawlowski is in hissecond season at the helm and he’s trying toget Auburn back to Birmingham for thefirst time since 2003. The Tigers went 31-25 a year ago, but only 11-19 in the league.Georgia and Auburn haven’t played for thelast two seasons. The Tigers have a goodlineup, headlined by junior outfield BrianFletcher, who hit .301 with 17 homers and54 RBI’s in ’09.
March 26-28 in Starkville Mississippi State: John Cohen is in his
second year at the helm of his alma mater, taking over for the legendary Ron Polk.Even though MSU went to Omaha in2007, the feeling is that they’ve been passedin the state by Ole Miss, which would havebeen unthinkable a year ago. Also, South-ern Miss went to Omaha last year, afterbeating Ga. Tech in the Regional andFlorida in the Super. Georgia swept MSUa year ago, and Perno has had incrediblesuccess against the Maroons, highlightedby an 8-2 mark in the last 10 Starkvillemeetings. Connor Powers is one of theleague’s best hitters. The senior infielder hit.301 while homering 19 times and drivingin 63 last season.
April 2-4 in Baton RougeLSU: The machine just keeps rolling
along. LSU has been the nation’s most suc-
cessful program over the past 20 years, highlighted by six national championships. The Tigers roared to the big prize a year agoand have two of the country’s top playersback in Friday night ace righty AnthonyRanaudo and lefty slugger Blake Dean, who“slumped” to .328-17-71 a year ago. LSUusually leads the nation in attendance, andlike South Carolina and Ole Miss, theTigers have a spectacular new stadium.
April 9-11 in AthensDrew Pomeranz and Ole Miss: Ole
Miss has a horse to throw of Friday nightwith Pomeranz, regarded by some scoutsas the country’s premier left-handed starter. He’s a power south-paw with outstandingcontrol. Ole Miss is fighting injuries to itspitching staff, and will lean heavily on itsace, who went 8-4 with a 3.40 ERA a yearago. The Rebels visit Athens in early April(Masters Weekend). Ole Miss has beenconsistently good, but the Rebels haven’tfound their way to Omaha. Since 2005,Ole Miss has lost in four super-regionals,including three at home when they’ve wonthe opener of the best of three sets.
April 16-18 in FayettevilleArkansas craftiness: The Razorbacks
didn’t have overwhelming personnel a yearago, but Dave Van Horn’s team toppedFlorida State in a Tallahassee Super-Re-gional and found their way to the CollegeWorld Series. Zack Cox is back after going5-1 on the hill and belting 13 home runs.
April 23-25 in AthensSouth Carolina: Ray Tanner has done
great things in Columbia, etching his nameright next to June Raines as legendaryGamecock baseball coaches. Tannerguided South Carolina to three consecutiveCollege World Series trips from 2002-2004. As usual, South Carolina has a pow-erhouse line-up, led by first baseman NickEbert, who blasted 23 homers and drovein 73, while batting .321 a year ago.
April 30 – May 2 in NashvilleVanderbilt: Tim Corbin has another
good club in the Music City, with a typi-cally strong starting rotation. This programhas taken enormous steps over the pastdecade. Until the middle of the pastdecade, the ‘Dores played in a stadium thatwould have been laughable by many highschool standards. Vandy, like Ole Miss, hasbeen close, but hasn’t been able to take thatstep to Omaha despite having such premierplayers as Jeremy Sowers, David Price andPedro Alvarez. Sophomore DH AaronWestlake was one of the league’s top hittersin ’09, batting .377, with 10 homers and57 RBI’s.
May 7-9 in AthensTennessee: Georgia should have a
chance to close the season on a strong note, with two of the last three series at homeagainst East foes Tennessee and Kentucky, both projected to finish in the bottom half ofthe division. Todd Raleigh is in his secondseason in Knoxville, succeeding Rod Del-monico who was let go following the 2007season despite having led Tennessee toOmaha three times, including a 2005 trip. That move raised some eyebrows. Tennesseehas fought scholarship limitations due to RPIacademic issues. Catcher Blake Forsythe, who hit .347-11-46 in ’09, is one of theleague’s best.
May 14-16 in GainesvilleFlorida: The Gators are loaded and one
of the favorites to win the SEC title. KevinO’Sullivan is in his third year at Florida, andthe former Clemson assistant just missed outon becoming the fourth consecutive Gatorcoach to pilot the program to Omaha. ButFlorida fell at home in the Super to SouthernMiss. The Gators were 46-22 a year ago andwon the East with a 19-11 record. Versatileinfielder Preston Tucker headlines the potentattack, on the heels of an 85 RBI season a yearago, to go along with a .364 average and 15round trippers. Perno’s Bulldogs have woneight of the last 10 meetings with the Gatorsin Gainesville.
May 20-22 in AthensKentucky: Not having Paxton is a huge
blow for the Wildcats, who went 28-26 over-all and 12-18 in the league a year ago. WhenCohen, who led Kentucky to the 2006 SECchampionship, left for Starkville, the Wild-cats stayed in house and hired longtimepitching coach Gary Henderson. Georgiaswept Big Blue a year ago in Lexington. There’s a good chance, with the Dogs hope-fully fully healthy and playing their best base-ball at season’s end, could have a lot on theline when Kentucky visits Foley Field.
Making the eight-team SEC tourney isa virtual assurance of an NCAA Tournamentberth. This Georgia team has a chance tomake history, and earn a third consecutiveRegional bid. Perno’s teams, indicated by thethree College World Series juggernauts whichall put together extended second half win-ning streaks along with the obvious postsea-son success, have traditionally closed strong.
Almost every year, almost every team inthe league is good. There’s a fine line betweenthe conference championship, division titles,Birmingham berths and post-season exclu-sion.
It’s time for the gauntlet to begin.

Athens might be known for its historical buildings and traditions, it’s the Classic Cityfor a reason, but one common trend through the campus of UGA is development. Over thepast few years, there have been multi-million dollar expansions to the Health Center and theTate Center, a brand new art school and now an expansion to the state museum of art oncampus. What’s next?
The University is planning renovations to the Stegeman Coliseum that are going tochange the fan experience for the better. Arthur Johnson, Assistant Associate Director forInternal Operations, says the changes will bring over 10,000 additional square feet on boththe north and the south sides of the building. There will not be any additional seatingadded, but there will be more women’s restrooms and concession stands so fans will haveshorter lines and can get back to the action faster. And not only will you be able to get yourdome-dog in record time, but there is expected to be 15-22 points of sale. This also in-cludes a variety of different menus and concessions. Another difference will be a centralticket booth. There will still be multiple gates for fans to enter the coliseum, but all ticketpurchases, will call and student tickets will be at one booth. The renovation also includesnew flooring and overall bettering the space.
The project is over halfway through the planning and designing part of the process. From the edge of the top of the building to the ground will be glass. The doors will betaken out all around the building, which will open up the space for fans once they are in-side. Construction is set to take place after graduation this spring and should be completedin the middle of November, before the 2010-2011 basketball season starts.
So where did the idea for renovating the building come from? The university wants togive fans the best experience possible when they go to any sporting event, and they are start-ing with Stegeman. It is hard to beat the experience of a packed house and a SEC win, butthey are going to try. The Athletic Association wants to increase fan base and the amenitiesof the building. The ideas and plans were brought up at the fall Athletic Board Meeting. Be-cause the university owns the building, and the Board of Regents allows its use beginning atthe start of basketball season, gymnastics and for graduation, they needed the go-ahead be-fore any more moves could be made. They were approved in the winter, and the processhasn’t rested since then.
There is always something to look forward to when it comes to UGA athletics, and thisis no exception. The renovations, with extra space, restrooms, concessions and options, willmake the Stegeman experience better than ever. So next season when you can’t miss an-other dunk from Travis Leslie or performance from Kat Ding, but have that insatiable urgefor a bag of popcorn…fret not.

And that is precisely what it got. Entering the Classic Center, I impatiently waited in line to receive my tasting plate, glass and
