The City Of Ephesusby Merrill C. Tenney

The city o Ephesus was oneo the oldest o the settlements onthe west coast o Asia Minor andwas the leading city o the Ro-man province o Asia. Its origin isshrouded in antiquity, but it was aprominent settlement in the eighthcentury b .c . and was at an earlydate taken over by the Greeks. It was located about three miles

rom the sea on the Cayster River, which at that time was navigable,so that Ephesus was a seaport. Thevalley o the Cayster penetrated arinland, making a caravan route tothe East. Roads rom Ephesus com-municated with all the other largecities o the province and with thelines o commerce that connectedwith the north and east. It wasa strategic point or evangelism, since workers rom Ephesus couldmaintain contact with the wholeAsian hinterland.

The outstanding eature oEphesus was its great temple oArtemis, a local deity who was

later identi ed with Artemis othe Greeks and with Diana o theRomans. Her image was a many breasted gure with a emale ace, having instead o legs a solid blocko stone. The rst temple was prob-ably begun in the sixth centuryb .c ., but was not nished until 400b .c . It was burned to the ground in356 b .c . and replaced by a newerand larger structure, our hundredtwenty- ve eet by two hundredtwenty eet, which was subsidized

by contributions rom all o Asia.It was considered to be one o thewonders o the world and was anoutstanding center or pilgrimswho came to worship at its shrine.

Not only was the temple acenter or religious worship, but because its halls and grounds wereregarded as sacred and inviolable,it became also an asylum or the

    oppressed and a depository orunds.

A crude picture o the templeappeared on Ephesian coins, accompanied by the very titlewhich is used in Acts or the city,NEOKOROS, or temple-sweepero Artemis (19:35). Contrary tomuch o the routine state worshipo the ancient world, the inhabit-ants o Asia and o Ephesus in par-ticular exhibited an almost anaticaldevotion to Artemis. Its intensityappeared in the action o the mobin the amphitheater, which or twohours shouted, Great is Diana othe Ephesians (19:34).

Ephesus was rated as a ree cityand maintained its own govern-ment. The ultimate authority layin the popular assembly whenlegally convoked (19:39), while theleaders or senate o the city actedas the central legislative body. The secretary or town clerk wasthe responsible o cer who wasentrusted with keeping records

and with presenting business to theassembly (19:35). The infuence olabor was also strong, or it was theguild o silversmiths who protestedthat Pauls evangelizing activitieshad imperiled their trade in reli-gious souvenirs, the silver shrinesthat were miniature copies o thetemple.

There were several importantproblems which Paul encounteredin Ephesus. The rst was the ques-tion o the survival o the teaching

o John the Baptist, whose discipleswere still active a ter Johns li ehad closed. Apollos, an educatedAlexandrian Jew, had already beenpreaching in Ephesus concerning Jesus, knowing only the baptismo John (18:24, 25). Undoubtedlyhe knew that the Messiah wascoming, that He had already beenanointed to serve God, and that

preparation or His ministry mustinclude repentance and aith. Hisknowledge was not so much alseas partial; he had not gone arenough. He was preaching in thesynagogues and apparently evokedsome response.

Under the tutelage o Priscillaand Aquila his understanding was broadened. A contrast o phraseshere is enlightening: Luke saysthat he had been instructed in theway o the Lord (18:25), but thatPriscilla and Aquila expoundedunto him the way o God more accu-rately (18:26, italics ours). LeavingEphesus with the recommendationo the believers there, he went overto Achaia and became a strongapologist or the Christian aith, especially among the Jews (18:28).Later he became one o Paulstrusted riends and colleagues (ICor. 16:12, Titus 3:13).

Apollos departed rom Ephesus be ore Paul arrived, but otherslike him were there. These men,

    disciples o John the Baptist, werede cient in personal spiritualexperience. So obvious was this actthat when Paul came into contactwith them, he asked them i theyhad received the Holy Spirit whenthey believed. Their answer wasthat they had not so much as heardwhether the Holy Spirit had come.In view o Johns prediction that Jesus would baptize with the HolySpirit, it seems inconceivable thatthey had never heard His name;

but they might never have heardo the ul llment o the promise atPentecost. The reply o Paul provedthat the baptism o John was insu -

cient to produce a ull Christianexperience, or the believer mustnot only repent o sin, he must also be lled with the Spirit. The rstproblem at Ephesus, then, was to bring sincere but immature believ-

ers up to date.A second important problem o

the Asian mission was the occult. The Jewish exorcists represented by the seven sons o Sceva, and thehundreds o nameless persons who burned their books o magic areproo o the wide extent to whichsuperstition and demonology pre-vailed. The answer to this problemwas two old. On the positive side, the power o Christ was demon-strated to be greater than that othe exorcists and o demon cults. The sick were healed, the obsessedwere delivered, and those whopracticed the occult arts were soconvicted o the evil o their waysthat they voluntarily destroyed the

books o magic on which they hadrelied (Acts 19:19). On the negativeside, the exclusive character o thegospel was demonstrated. A Chris-tian did not add his Christianity tohis other religions; he discardedthem. Christianity was essentiallyintolerant o all rivals, and nowhereis this principle better demonstrat-ed than at Ephesus.

The ministry o Paul in Ephesuswas singularly e ective. For morethan two years (19:8, 10) he wasable to preach unhindered, rstin the synagogue and later in theschool o Tyrannus (19:9). He per-

ormed special miracles (19:11) andreached the populace o Ephesusand o the province as a whole

more thoroughly than he did thepeople o any other place. Lukenotes that all they that dwelt inAsia heard the word o the Lord, both Jews and Greeks (19:10), thatmightily grew the word o theLord and prevailed (19:20), andthat so many had believed thatidolatry su ered economic loss(19:26,27). The church at Ephesus became a missionary center andwas or centuries one o the strong-holds o Christianity in Asia Minor.
