  • patents in the heavy oil industry. These patents have provided numerous benefits to the industry, including a significant drop in flaring, a substantial decrease in operating costs, improved water cut measurement and a reduction in environmental impact as well, says Graham MacPherson, Millenia partner.

With the vast experience and expertise of its engineers and partners, Millenia is able to carry a project from initial design to start-up and turn over to the client. Projects can range from $1,000 to $100 million and what remains con-stant is the high level of service, commitment and attention each project receives and the out-of-the-box thinking that garners innovative solutions for client challenges.

The partners sometimes refer to themselves as grey zone engineers; while they can do the black-and-white standard jobs that everyone else does, they arent afraid to use their engineering stamp to think of other ways of attacking a challenging project that falls somewhere in between in the grey zone.

The Millenia partners situate themselves on the front lines of these attacks, staying intimately involved in projects and placing accountability directly into their own hands.

Each of the partners has different strengths and together we can reach a synergy in the company, says Robert Gasper,

Millenia partner. When guys are all invested in seeing the whole project come together you feel some ownership in a project. Thats what makes Millenia stand out from other firms our ownership in our work.

Unlike these other firms, Millenias partners act as project managers and are often in the field, providing junior engineers with a great opportunity to learn under them. Also, with the wide variety of projects undertaken at Millenia, employees have exposure to several aspects of any given project.

To minimize our overhead costs, which translates into client cost savings, requires us to utilize personnel in vari-ous functions during a project. This means staff may be pulled into different tasks, wherever we know their assets will be used the best, says Travis Wolfe, Millenia partner.

This wide-ranging exposure is uncommon in most engi-neering firms. Often, employees are pigeon-holed into one area of a project without getting experience in the other parts of the whole. This difference is likely one of the rea-sons why Millenia has so many employees who have been with the company for 10-plus years and a handful who have been there for around 15 years. Another is the flexibility they enjoy in the office. Employees enjoy flexible working hours while still supporting core office hours. A work/life

MEETINGS AND CONVENTIONS CALGARY IS INDUSTRY LEADERMeetings and Conventions Calgary (MCC) operates as a destination sales and marketing organization with a mandate to assist meeting planners, corporate clients, and association executives interested in Calgary as a prime location for their meetings, conventions, and incentive programs. MCC was established through a partnership between the Calgary Hotel Association (CHA) and the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre (CTCC). The MCC model, implemented by the CHA, was one of a few in North America back in 2009 and is now followed by several more cities across Canada and the United States. Clients have many destination options to choose from in todays global market and it is imperative to Calgarys local economy to attract business travelers and convention delegates to our city.

Building on its successful sales record, MCC has a long-term focus to deliver business opportunities enhancing Calgarys reputation as a Convention destination for the future. Dave Sclanders, Executive Director with MCC explains, our sales team is working with planners who are considering cities to host their congress beyond 2020.

Farmers Insurance from the US, is hosting one of their many annual incentive trips for qualifying employees and their spouses here in Calgary this July. MCC recognizes that Calgary has not had success in attracting this type of business sector in the past, making the opportunity to host the Farmers Insurance group that much more exciting. Slanders adds, Along with having business sessions and plenaries, these delegates will disperse around our city and the immediate area utilizing restaurants, attractions, guest ranches and many hot spots in Calgarys cultural scene. However the real bonus is these large incentive groups all talk, so the Farmers experience in our city very well could parlay us into being considered for other future corporate incentive trips.

MCC is also working with a number of Calgarys educational institutions and business partners to attract congresses that will expand beyond the economic benefits of the convention delegate, and into the exchange of intellectual capital that international delegates will share with local attendees. Sclanders says, As much as technology has revolutionized the world and continues to do so every day, face-to-face meetings remain the preference and seemingly the most productive way to accomplish measureable results. This is not only true for the association market or for successful corporations, but even world leaders still defy all the security and logistics hassles to hold G-8 style meetings. Meeting Planners are always on the look out to work with cities that are creative and offer unique ranges of options, this helps them both expand membership and create outstanding events.

Expanding the traditional view of conventions, Sclanders states that the future of the meetings and convention industry involves a much more elongated sales cycle than was the case in the past. He explains, International associations now have global members, hence the need to rotate their meetings around the world. For example, the next North American rotation could be 6 years away, so we need to know when the bid date is, and start working to be considered as a eligible bidder. That often includes engaging a local champion within that industry sector to collaborate with us and present the bid on behalf of the city.

Calgarians who are members of National or International associations are invited to connect with the Meetings + Conventions Calgary team to learn more about becoming a local host (champion).

balance is important, and this positive environment has caused many former employees to return to work at Millenia again.

Weve had many people come back, and theyve even formed a Rebound Society. Every month they host a Hawaiian shirt pizza lunch, says Wolfe. That kind of validates that we have a unique working environment here.

This loyalty also helps to solidify the relationships with clients as well as ven-dors. Clients can be confident that the Millenia contacts will remain the same over the long term so they are always up to speed on their projects. The company also works at fostering strong, positive relationships with vendors.

We have a client that has a need and we fill that need, and a big part of that is our interaction with vendors. They are a critical part of this process. They supply the hardware so they are vital to a projects success, Wolfe says.

As Millenia recognizes its milestone anniversary, those at the helm are look-ing back with appreciation at the clients, vendors and employees who have gotten them there while at the same time looking to the future.

Its a celebration of history but also a statement saying that its going to go on. What are the next 20 years going to look like? says Greg Sunley, member of the Rebound Society and Millenias newest partner.

Despite some current industry uncertainty, the partners at Millenia Engineering are looking forward. They know that due to their longevity, commitment and loyalty to positive project outcomes and ability to be flexible, the next two decades are sure to hold more of the same for Millenia continuing to come up with practical, innovative solutions that fit with clients criteria and being a leader in the upstream oil and gas industry.
