Our Landscape
www.bicy.it
Basic assumptions
The achievement of a higher sustainability in transport
New pan-European rail corridors, new motorways, inter-modal platforms are useful to improve the transport of people and goods on the long distances, not to solve the problems affecting internally the congested areas, especially urban
Approximately 80% of all urban trips are for distance by less than 5 kilometers
A wide and extensive use of bicycles would give a relevant contribution to reduce traffic congestion, pollution and hence the emission of CO2, with great positive effects on save of time whilst circulating (and parking), improvement of health population and struggle against the climate change
The CE area wouldn’t clearly be marked by a good level of cohesion and equal implementation of strategic EU policies, if the cycling mobility level was assumed as an indicator of cohesion
Cities with a high cycling share rate need less space for transport, whereas infrastructure gains more space for other utilisation and a better use for public areas
www.bicy.it
Main objectives Develop a coherent and integrated urban-regional bike planning, as a strategic component of the entire urban-territorial planning
Promote cycling as a key component of public transport Raise awareness of local decision makers and citizens on bicycles as an equivalent means of urban transportation and a valid replacement of the car for shorter trips
Promote the bicycle as a modern, ecological and safer means of transportation – especially in the NMS where cycling is often associated with poverty Strengthen the front runners experience, also with new and innovative technologies – and, at the same time – enable policy makers and relevant stakeholders of lagging behind areas to learn from the first
Implement concrete actions, conceived at trans-national level that are then customized locally and thus able to achieve tangible outputs related to new mobility strategies
Develop local/national cycling strategies based on mutual transnational learning
