PREFACEHi, my name is Pat Montani, founder of the Bicycles for Humanity Movement. Seven years ago when I started the Bicycles for Humanity movement we learned of the need for bicycles for health care workers in Namibia and it made sense to me. Bicycles for Humanity Kelowna sent the first container to partners in Namibia and our movement has supported this country every since. Our BEC (Bicycle Empowerment Centre) model has scaled globally and it has stayed with B4H to this day and is an integral part of our mobility and empowerment strategy.

Bicycles for Humanity is about empowerment, it is about teams in the developing world and the developed world coming together to make a difference.

From the initial shipment in 2005, over 14 chapters have joined supporting Namibia and we look to build the base of support in this region. Namibia is in our roots and it is very important to our movement. Today, B4H chapters are in 7 African countries, but Namibia is where we got our start and it’s one of our Globally Supported Countries (GSC), along with Uganda and South Africa. As chapters begin to move into other countries and begin to encourage new chapters to start to join these countries, there will be many more GSC countries.

B4h Namibia/Angola has set it's sights on building teams to deliver 25,000 bicycles along with an empowerment model to help the people of this region. Teamwork is key and together we can do it.

PREFACEIn Uganda, Paul Sherwen is a key part of our movement. Having grown up there, he understands the need and, globally, Paul has given us the presence and support to help B4H Uganda - Karamoja really get rolling.

Joining our movement is Nigel Reynolds a world class Tri Athelete, living in Tsumeb who has started B4H Namibia/Angola to expand and support our programs in Namibia and Southern Angola.

I'm delighted to announce, that Paula Newby Fraser has joined B4H. Born in Rhodesia, the head of Ironman and 8 times winner of Ironman Hawaii, Paula is probably the world's best female athelete. Like Paul, she has her roots in Africa and understands the power of a bicycle and the gift of mobility. We welcome Paula to our global team and together, our goal is to continue to tell the story of the need for bicycles in Namibia and the importance of supporting the programs started by BEN and B4H in this country.

OVERVIEWNamibia is a country of contrasts, both highly developed and very poor at the same time. Being controlled by Germany for many years, it has the infrastructure, commerce and economy of many european dominated African countries, but the local people have not had access to much of this and today are one of the poorest countries in the world.

Mobility delivered by a bicycle will kickstart many local economies closing the gap and with many healthcare workers having gained access to a bicycle. Our movement has done an incredible amount to stem aids and reduce poverty, while empowering women. Today, B4H is faced with new challenges: how to support the people of Namibia/Angola and how to help them take the next steps to a better life. Bicycles are just the start, skills and entrepreneurial training, leadership and a coming together of teams from Africa and the developed world are key to the next and a better life for all.

Key to the support is having on the ground people we can work with who share our vision and our teams that live in Namibia have the skills and the determination to make a difference. We are pleased to welcome B4H Namibia/Angola to our Global Support Organization and we look forward to together helping change lives and inspire many in this area.

With B4H chapters playing an increasing role in how projects are run in the developing world, chapters coming together and with strong partners like Nigel and Paula, B4H Namibia/Angola can make a difference.

GLOBALLY SUPPORTED COUNTRIESGlobally Supported Countries are regions where we have B4H teams in place and together with our chapters we work to help the people in the region. GSC projects have B4H volunteers on both sides and everyone is a part of the team that makes a difference with the communities. It has B4H volunteers on the ground and adheres to the movement's belief's and open accountability and exchange of information for all.

If you or your community want to be a part of our movement and want to join our GSC program, please send an email to Pat Montani ([email protected]).

The benefits of a GSC are: openess, full accountability to all chapters, commnication is back from our community partners monthly and involvement at all levels. The partners are approved and chapters work with the people to make a difference.

Many people in developing countries live far from schools, healthcare, water or food. A bicycle can provide mobility in these areas and better access to their needs. Here are a few examples of how a bicycle can empower its user.

STRATEGYOur strategy for Namibia is simple, to continue to support the communities and the BEC's established in that country and to expand the number of bikes delivered to Namibia. To do this, it is important to expand our chapter base supporting this country, new chapter growth is key and hopefully with Paula and the strong ties to many Tri and cycling clubs, we can build our base of chapters supporting Namibia.

Thanks to the generosity of Nigel Reynolds and the donation of a B4H truck to support the deliver of bicycles to all communities in namibia, we are able to continue to support all BEC's in Namibia, plus add our new value added approach to the programs.

CYCLE 4 LIFE PROJECTCycle 4 Life Project with a holistic approach was founded and launched by Nigel Reynolds, a former Professional Cyclist & Triathlete of Team Australia between 1987 - 1992 and businessman in the manufacturing sector. As a project in North Namibia in 2011, it focus a “Youth at Risk Outreach Ministry” to offer social development and upliftment. C4L also offers a health and wellness program to the locals in Namibia with a daily cycling program. C4L Project builds BMX tracks in communities to take kids of the street and offer them a safe place of fun to build both self esteem and self confidence. We have a saying in Africa, “A child in sport is a child out of court”. In July 2012, setup it’s 1st BEC in Tsumeb, North Namibia and offers it’s own trucks for the distribution of bicycles to those in need in North Namibia and South Angola.

C4L have offered this service to any B4H donated bicycles to the region and have established a warehouse in Tsumeb for storage and distribution of bicycles to the needy. Controlling and distributing bikes in smaller quantities helps the BEC to carefully manage their stock and income.

A new C4L BEC was setup in Grootfontien, North Namibia with lots of plans to uplift the local community of 30,000 persons.

RESULTS 2013In 2013 , 5 chapters delivered around 2500 bicycles to Namibia. Many chapters were focused on helping Uganda get started and with this in place, our goal is to again build a base of chapters and support for Namibia. Movements grow when like minded people come together to make a difference, all sharing a common set of goals and beliefs. For our first 6 years we were really focused on one country, Namibia, but with chapters extending and now supporting new countries, our movement needs to catch it's breath and begin to build communities of support to encourage others to join specific countries. With Paul Sherwen as a spokesperson for Karamoja and Paula Newby Fraser a spokesperson for Namibia, and all of the chapters globally telling the story, our goal is to build at minimum 10 new chapters supporting our Globally Supported Countries program for Namibia in 2014 and to deliver at minimum 5,000 bicycles to support all BEC's.
