Another Look at Abortion Uniquely You
From your first moments of existence, you had all the DNA that would
determine your sex, facial features, physique, and the color of your skin,
hair, and eyes. At 24 days, your heart began beating. By 8 weeks, all your
organs were present, and your unique fingerprints were forming. Ultra-
sounds show that by 18 weeks, you could swim, somersault, suck your
thumb, and even cover your ears if you heard loud music. If you’d been
born just 23 weeks after conception, your chance of survival would be 50-80 percent; by 25 weeks, it’s over 90
percent, and that’s still months before full-term birth.
Now, if someone takes an innocent person’s life after he or she is born, it’s against the law; just minutes before
birth, it’s legal in most states and called abortion. The only real difference is a declaration by the United States
Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade (1973).
Abortion Is Permitted Up to Full-Term Birth
Many people don’t realize how unrestricted legal abortion is, misled by Roe’s claim that states may ban abor-
tions after viability “except when it is necessary to preserve the life or health of the mother.” (“Viability” is
when the baby has a reasonable chance of survival outside the womb.) But in Roe’s companion case, Doe v.
Bolton, the Court defined “health” to include “all factors—physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and
the woman’s age—relevant to the wellbeing” of the mother. That seems broad enough to permit virtually any
abortion post-viability.
The Supreme Court, however, has yet to be confronted with a challenge to a post-viability ban that will test
Doe’s breadth. Indeed, 20 states currently ban late-term abortions subject to a narrow exception for the
mother’s life or physical health (not for emotional, psychological, familial, or age-related reasons). Most of
these laws have gone unchallenged, but they are hard to enforce even if they are constitutionally permissible.
Effects of Abortion
Abortion results in the death of a child. For many mothers, abortion causes severe and long-lasting emotional,
psychological, and spiritual trauma. Many women experience overwhelming guilt, shame, and grief. Other ef-
fects have also been documented: depression, withdrawal from others, eating disorders, self-punishing behav-
iors like “cutting,” sexual dysfunction and problems with intimacy, alcohol and drug dependency, problems
bonding with other or subsequent children, abortion-related nightmares, and other sleep problems.Family rela-
tionships may suffer as the aborted child’s father, grandparents, or other family members experience their own
guilt, grief, or loss. Even if the mother keeps her abortion secret, family members can be distressed by changes
in the mother’s behavior and mental or emotional health.
What the Church Teaches The Church has consistently taught that every human life is precious and worthy
of protection. Every intentional abortion is gravely wrong. In April 2018, Pope Francis wrote: “Our defence of
the innocent unborn … needs to be clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which
is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development.”
The Church does not approach difficult pregnancy decisions with a false “either/or” mentality, pitting mother
against child. For example, a baby conceived in rape is not an aggressor deserving death by abortion. She is
innocent, like her mother. They both deserve compassionate care and support, not more violence. Abortion
doesn’t bring healing or peace, but both can be found in the courageous decision to give birth to the baby.
Today, many babies diagnosed prenatally with a disability are aborted. Frightened parents, unsure of their abil-
ity to care for such a child, can trust that God gave them this child for a reason. Parents raising children with
disabilities often write about the unexpected joys and transformative effect on their families.
Even when the disabilities are so severe that the baby is likely to die before or soon after birth, “many parents
who carried their children to term say that protecting their baby and honoring his or her natural life, no matter
how brief, was profoundly healing.”

Formation School of Faith For Leadership and Lay Ministry
These classes are designed for growth in knowledge of our faith, creed and doctrine of the Church. Led by Bishop Joseph Tyson, the English-speaking Magnificat program is a formation school of faith for lead-ership and lay ministry. For the 2018-2019 year, the Encuentro process will also be part of the formation program. All classes will be offered at St Paul's Cathedral Build-ing in Yakima, Saint Joseph School in Wenatchee, or Holy Spirit Parish in Kennewick, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Very rarely, continuing a pregnancy may put a mother’s life at risk—for example, because of a tubal preg-
nancy or aggressive uterine cancer. It is morally licit to remove the threat to the mother’s life by removing the
cancerous uterus or the fallopian tube where the child implanted, even though it is foreseeable that the child
will die as an indirect and unintended result of such surgery. But abortion—a direct and intentional taking of a
child’s life—is never morally permissible.
What Are We to Do?
Love them both! Support women who need help during and after difficult pregnancies through the work of
your diocesan Respect Life office and local pregnancy care centers.
Educate yourself and others about struggles some experience after abortion, and find out where to refer those
seeking help at www.hopeafterabortion.org. If you feel called to support your local ministry, contact your di-
ocesan Project Rachel Ministry office for ways you might help.
Stay informed about key federal legislation and the voting records of your elected representatives by visiting
www.humanlifeaction.org and www.usccb.org/prolife. Stay updated on state issues by signing up to receive
information from your state Catholic conference or diocesan pro-life office.
Most importantly, pray daily for the end to abortion, that all mothers and children experience the loving sup-
port of the Church community, and that all who suffer after abortion find healing and peace.

Part of the beauty of stewardship spirituality is its simplicity and practicality. It can be summed up in the simple phrase, “All I have is a gift from God and I must make a grateful return to Him for all He has given me.”
So simple, that even our youngest parishioners can grasp the concept. Simple, however, does not necessarily mean easy. Simple also does not mean shallow. Today’s readings invite us to look into the depth of a stewardship way of life. And they reveal that it requires the commitment of our whole being to God. It is anything but easy or shallow. It points us to seek after higher things — the wisdom of God and Heaven itself. Our Second Reading, from the Letter to the Hebrews, shows us a way to obtain such wisdom —it is available to us right in the Scriptures, which are the living word of God. Every time we approach them in a spirit of prayer, they will speak to us. God’s wisdom is right there for us. All we need to do is commit some daily time to seek it. Our Gospel Reading from Mark is one of the better-known passages in the Gospel – the story of the rich young man. In response to the man’s question on what he must do to obtain eternal life, Jesus tells him to keep the commandments. The man replies that he has always done this much. But he rightfully suspects there is more to being a disciple of Jesus than just following the external rules We are called to be so much more than rule-followers; we are called to be Christ followers. Por el contrario, se le daría una respuesta incapaz de durar en el tiempo, sin profundizar en las consecuencias positivas que trae el responderle a Dios con generosidad. El joven se fue triste. Poseía muchas riquezas y Cristo le pedía todo. Pensaba que tenía que elegir: Cristo o sus cosas. Pero ya antes Cristo lo había elegido con su mirada amorosa. Imaginemos lo que Cristo proyectó para su vida. Quizás, habría sido uno de los discípulos, pero prefirió sus planes y hoy no sabemos ni siquiera el nombre de aquel joven. Cristo respeta nuestra libertad, escucha nuestros planes, nos mira con amor, nos invita final-mente a seguirlo, pero nos fuerza en absoluto. Él espera nuestra respuesta. El Señor sigue pasando a lo largo del camino y no se cansa de invitar. Quiere nuestra felicidad. Le entristecen nuestras preferencias por las riquezas y apegos a los bienes materiales. Ayudemos a los demás a centrarse en Cristo, no en lo material y caduco que nos ofrece el mundo. Catholic.net

Otra mirada al aborto Eres único
Desde tus primeros momentos de existencia, tenías todo el ADN que determinaría tu sexo, tus rasgos faciales, tu físico y el color de tu piel, cabello y ojos. A los 24 días, tu corazón co-menzó a latir. A las 8 semanas, todos tus órganos estaban presentes, y tus huellas digitales únicas se estaban formando. Los ultrasonidos muestran que, a las 18 semanas, puedes nadar, dar volteretas, chuparte el pulgar e incluso cubrirte los oídos si escuchas música alta. Si hubieras nacido tan sólo 23 semanas después de la concepción, tus probabilidades de su-pervivencia serían del 50 al 80 por ciento; a las 25 semanas, de más del 90 por ciento, y eso que todavía faltan meses para el nacimiento a término.
Ahora bien, si alguien quita la vida a una persona inocente después de que nazca, es contra la ley; sólo unos
minutos antes del nacimiento, es legal en la mayoría de los estados y se llama aborto. La única diferencia real
es una declaración de la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos en Roe vs. Wade (1973).
El aborto se permite hasta el nacimiento a término
Muchas personas no se dan cuenta de cuán irrestricto es el aborto legal, engañadas por la afirmación de Roe de
que los estados pueden prohibir los abortos después de la viabilidad “excepto cuando es necesario para preser-
var la vida o la salud de la madre”. (“Viabilidad” es cuando el bebé tiene posibilidades razonables de sobrevi-
vir fuera del útero.) Pero en el caso complementario de Roe, Doe vs. Bolton, la Corte Suprema definió “salud”
de modo de incluir “todos los factores —físicos, emocionales, psicológicos, familiares, y la edad de la mujer—
relevantes para el bienestar” de la madre. Esto parece tan amplio como para permitir prácticamente cualquier
aborto después de la viabilidad.
La Corte Suprema, sin embargo, aún no se ha enfrentado a una impugnación, a una prohibición posterior a la
viabilidad que ponga a prueba el alcance de Doe. De hecho, 20 estados actualmente prohíben los abortos tard-
íos sujetos a una excepción limitada a la vida o la salud física de la madre (no por razones emocionales, psi-
cológicas, familiares o relacionadas con la edad). La mayoría de estas leyes no han sido impugnadas, pero son
difíciles de hacer cumplir incluso si son constitucionalmente permisibles.
Efectos del aborto
El aborto resulta en la muerte de un niño. En muchas madres, el aborto causa un trauma emocional, psicológi-
co y espiritual severo y duradero. Muchas mujeres experimentan culpa, vergüenza y pena abrumadoras. Tam-
bién se han documentado otros efectos: depresión, aislamiento de los demás, trastornos de la alimentación,
conductas de autocastigo como hacerse cortes en las muñecas, disfunción sexual y problemas con la intimidad,
dependencia del alcohol y las drogas, problemas de vinculación afectiva con los otros hijos o con los posterio-
res, pesadillas relacionadas con el aborto, y otros problemas para dormir.
Las relaciones familiares pueden sufrir a medida que el padre del niño abortado, los abuelos u otros familiares
experimentan su propia culpa, dolor o pérdida. Incluso si la madre mantiene en secreto su aborto, los familia-
res pueden angustiarse por los cambios en el comportamiento y la salud mental o emocional de la madre.
Lo que la Iglesia enseña
La Iglesia siempre ha enseñado que toda vida humana es preciosa y digna de protección. Todo aborto intencio-
nal es gravemente malicioso. En abril de 2018, el papa Francisco escribió: “La defensa del inocente que no ha
nacido… debe ser clara, firme y apasionada, porque allí está en juego la dignidad de la vida humana, siempre
sagrada, y lo exige el amor a cada persona más allá de su desarrollo”.
La Iglesia no aborda las difíciles decisiones sobre el embarazo con una falsa mentalidad de “o el uno o el
otro”, enfrentando a la madre con el niño. Por ejemplo, un bebé concebido por violación no es un agresor que
merezca la muerte por aborto. Es inocente, como su madre. Ambas merecen atención y apoyo compasivos, no
más violencia. El aborto no trae sanación o paz, pero ambas se pueden encontrar en la valiente decisión de dar
a luz al bebé.

Magnificat (Spanish) 2018 – 2019 Programa de Formación en la Fe y Liderazgo Laico
Estas clases están diseñadas para el crecimiento en el conocimiento de nues-tra fe, credo y doctrina de la Iglesia. Dirigido por el obispo Joseph Tyson, el programa de Magnificat de habla inglesa es una escuela de formación de fe pa-ra el liderazgo y el ministerio laico. Hoy, muchos bebés con diagnóstico prenatal de discapacidad son abortados. Los asustados padres, inseguros
de su capacidad de cuidar de un niño así, pueden confiar en que Dios les dio a ellos este hijo por una razón.
Padres que crían a niños con discapacidades a menudo escriben sobre las alegrías inesperadas y el efecto trans-
formador en sus familias.
Incluso cuando las discapacidades son tan severas que es probable que el bebé muera antes o poco después del
nacimiento, “muchos padres que llevaron sus embarazos a término dicen que proteger a su hijo y honrar su
vida natural, sin importar cuán breve sea, fue profundamente sanador”.
En muy raras ocasiones, continuar un embarazo puede poner en riesgo la vida de la madre, por ejemplo, debi-
do a un embarazo tubárico o un cáncer uterino agresivo. Es moralmente lícito eliminar la amenaza para la vida
de la madre extrayendo el útero canceroso o la trompa de Falopio donde se implantó el niño, aunque sea previ-
sible que el niño muera como resultado indirecto e involuntario de dicha cirugía. Pero el aborto —el quitar di-
recta e intencionalmente la vida a un niño— nunca es moralmente permisible.
¿Qué debemos hacer?
¡Amarlos a ambos! Apoye a las mujeres que necesitan ayuda durante y después de embarazos difíciles a través
del trabajo de su oficina diocesana de Respetemos la Vida y los centros locales de cuidado del embarazo.
Edúquese a usted mismo y a otros sobre las dificultades que algunas personas experimentan después del abor-
to, y averigüe dónde derivar a quienes buscan ayuda en www.esperanzaposaborto.org. Si se siente llamado a
apoyar su ministerio local, comuníquese con su oficina diocesana del Proyecto Raquel para saber cómo podría
ayudar.

Lo más importante es orar diariamente por el final del aborto, para que todas las madres y niños experimenten

cuentren sanación y paz.
