Why Beautiful Data is Effective Data
The Met Office collects, generates and manipulates vast quantities of fast-moving data in the order of a petabyte a day, every day. In this session, Charles Ewen – Technology Director at the Met Office, will talk about what it means to at the extreme end of ‘Production Big Data’. With relevance to all organisations, the Met Office has to think clearly about how it manipulates data and the value that it extracts from it. Combining supercomputer science with highly available IT and delivering products using high-scale digital and social media provides plenty to talk about. Weather forecasts are about predicting the future state of chaotic systems Charles will talk about some of the fundamentals involved and how they apply to any organisation that is investigating the business value on offer from ‘Big Data’.
Sky has 10.5 million customers in the UK. Every day we collect the data from each press of the remote control, via the set top box, within 3 million of these homes. Here at Sky Media we are in a unique position to work with our Agencies, Advertisers and Media Partners to help them measure and analyse their media campaigns and their channels’ performance more effectively. Our aim is to be their ‘Data Partner of Choice’ and the underlying foundation for achieving this is Sky’s 3 million household Viewing Panel. It’s the beating heart of our future relationships and a key enabler for growth. It powers our innovation and insight. Nick will talk about how we collect the this massive amount of data each day, examples of how it is used within the Sky business, the importance of data security and how the Data Partnerships team within Sky Media are working with clients across multiple commercial areas.
Data is only useful when it can be used to create change. Although sometimes you have data compelling enough to convince your audience to act on its own, there are also times where you need to bring people on a journey to get them to see something subtle, complex our counter-intuitive - and that’s where how you choose to tell the story can make all the difference. In this talk we’ll be covering some ideas on visual storytelling and looking to see if there are lessons we can learn on how to use data effectively from a number of different fields including graphic design, product development, aesthetics and games.
