INTROto introduce today’s bIG IdEA: ‘POWER IN YOUR NAME’, present the following to the children. According to a report in britain parents spend “up to 45 hours” picking out a name for their child. One in three parents believed the right name can give achildconfidence;whileuptotwomillionthoughtitcouldhelptheirchildgetagood job. do you think your name can get you a better job? In the bible, there is a great deal of importance given to people’s names. Often, when someone’s name is mentioned, the bible will say what the name means. Rebekah gave birth to twins, one was hairy, so she named him ‘Esau’ (meaning hairy), and the other came out of the womb grasping his brother’s heel, she named him “Jacob”, (which means “he grabs the heel”). Jesus renamed Simon, whose name meant “he who hears” to Peter, which means “rock”. Names are important, but not important enough to decide your future. No matter what you think of your name, the Name of Jesus is theNameaboveallnames.ThereispowerinHisName.

STORYTELLINGRead out two stories from the book of Acts.

Acts 3:1-8 Peter used the name of Jesus to pray for a man who had been lame •since birth

Acts 8:12-13 Philip preached to large crowds of people about the kingdom of •God and the Name of Jesus

In the early days of the church, soon after Jesus had returned to heaven there wasaLOTgoingon.Thereweremiracles,healings,signsandwonders!Whywerethere so many dynamic things happening? how were these early Christians able to experience so many amazing miracles? In Acts 4:33 it tells us what they were doing;“WithgreatpowertheapostlescontinuedtotestifytotheresurrectionoftheLordJesus,andmuchgracewasuponthemall”.Theyunderstoodthepowerinthe Name of Jesus, and used his Name regularly to bring change in people’s lives andeventuallytheirwholeworld!

take out a bank card or credit card. Explain to the group that in the bank account thereis$10,000.Thatmoneyisyours!Butwithouttakingthebankcard,travellingto an automatic teller, putting the card in and withdrawing the money, you won’t receive your money. If the money is just sitting in the account it can’t be used unlesssomeonegoesandaccessesit.Thisissimilartoourhealing,itisavailablefor us. We need to take our faith and use it by praying to God and asking others to pray for us.

POINTS1. Jesus heals today.

When Jesus was walking on this earth, he performed many healing miracles for people. he made the blind see, the deaf hear and the lame walk (Matthew 15:29-31).Hehadcompassiononpeopleanddidn’twanttoseethemsuffering.Jesus is now in heaven and yet still heals today. When Jesus died on the cross, his body was broken for us so that our body could be whole. Isaiah 53:5(NIV) says, “ByHiswoundswearehealed”.There isabsolutelynothingthatJesuscannotheal.NodiseaseorillnessistoobigforGodtocure!

2. We are healed through faith – prayer.

When we are sick, we need to believe for healing so that we can receive it. We need to have faith so that we can be healed and we can have faith for others to be healed. In Matthew 9:22, Jesus says of the woman who was sick, “your faith has made you well.” In chapter 9, there is also a story of 2 people who were blindandmute.Theywantedtobehealed.Jesussaid,“Becauseofyourfaith,it will happen.”

to receive a miracle, we need to have faith and we also need to act on that faith. We need to dO something. When we take action, it is showing God that we truly believe and are willing and ready to do something about it. Prayer is an important key to having our bodies made well. We pray for ourselves and we canaskourfamiliesandfriendstoprayforourhealing.TheBiblesaysthatifwearesick,wecanaskpeopleinchurchtoprayforus.(James5:13-18)Throughprayer, we are made well again.

3. Jesus wants us to live in health.

What is even better than receiving healing when we are unwell? It’s walking incompletehealthandnotneedingamiracleinthefirstplace.In3John2,ittalks about enjoying good health in our bodies and our souls “dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well”. Our soul includes our mind and the thoughts that we have. We need look after our souls and keep them healthy by reading God’s Word and spending time with him everyday. In the same way we need to look after our bodies by exercising and eating well everyday.
