Biltmore Baptist Orchestra has produced a one-of-a-kind musical experience. From exciting classical arrangements of well-known melodies to jazz and Dixieland remixes of hymns and spirituals, to the best of marches in the Patriotic tradition, BBO treats audiences to a unique brand of entertainment.

Directed by Paul Babelay, the ensemble is made up of musicians from high school to thrice-retired. The 20+ members have diverse backgrounds ranging from musicians and surgeons to school teachers and pastors. The BBO was an audience favorite in the Carolina Mountain Christmas Spectacular at Biltmore Baptist Church for 20 years.

The ensemble’s musical selections and fun narratives recreate the simpler age of folks gathered at the town social for an evening of fun and music. Uplifting and entertaining for all, BBO leaves audiences clapping, smiling and wanting more.

Some of the songs you might hear tonight include “The Lord of the Dance”; “O Happy Day”; “American Celebration”; “Amazing Grace”; “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power”; “I’ve Got Joy”; “Mighty Fortress” and more. Everyone is welcome!

Let the games begin! Come cheer on your friends and neighbors

to the bronze, silver, and gold! What a perfect time to host the Givens Games right here on our campus, as we ramp up for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Get in the competitive mood and come cheer!

There are Givens Games Calendars on Programming, Wellness Center and Mail Room Bulletin Boards (or you may pick up a copy in Programming). ALL participants will be given a Red, White & Blue Participation Ribbon at their fi rst event – we ask that you please wear these all week, giving other residents the chance to talk with you about your event.

First, Second & Third Place Winners will be awarded their medals after their event. We ask that you please wear these proudly throughout the week. Residents can then ask one another what event(s) they participated in or how they won their medal.

The fi rst BIG event is the Monday Morning Mile, which will begin on the Terrace, outside of the Wellness area, at 9:15 AM. If you aren’t running or walking, we’d love to have you to line the course and cheer for those who are walking/running. Good cheering spots include Friendship Park, the outdoor Recreation Area, MemoryCare, and the Oxford Pond to see the fi nish line. Don’t forget--the games conclude with a Cook-Out Celebration Friday, August 5, beginning at 11:30 AM on the Terrace with hot dogs and all the fi xin’s. See page 8 for more info.

Because of the recent heat, participants and spectators are encouraged to carry their water bottles to all events to keep themselves hydrated, especially for the outdoor events. Lastly, participants are asked to call LuAnne Carmichel in Programming at 271-6935, if they are unable to participate in the event(s) they signed up for.

Please come and enjoy these games! The more cheerleaders we have, the more fun it is. We’ll see you

Pisgah Inn Lunch OutingMonday, August 29th10:30 AMLeaves from: Asbury & Oxford Commons

From their 5,000 foot elevation at Mt. Pisgah, marvel at the forest-clad mountain peaks, the mist fi lled coves, and the slopes of fragrant balsams, rhododendrons, mountain laurel and fl ame azalea. The name "Pisgah" comes from the fourth chapter of Deuteronomy, The Lord ordered Moses to the top of this mountain and told him to look in all directions, thus revealing the "Promised Land" to the tribes of Israel.

George Newton was a Presbyterian minister who lived and taught in the late 18th and early 19th centuries at what became Newton Academy in Asheville. Reverend Newton is credited with naming Mt. Pisgah. Because of the extensive view in all directions over a rich land, Reverend Newton felt there was similarity between this mountain and the one on which Moses stood.

Lunch will be in their main dining room where windows surround the room and overlook a panoramic view of the valley below. Menu items include local whole Mountain Trout, boneless North Carolina Pork Chop, Tuscan-style Meatloaf, which all include a choice of two sides and herb rolls. You can also choose their baked Chicken Pot Pie or Pisgah Pasta, salads, sandwiches like Monte Cristo or Reuben. Prices range from $7.95 for a grilled chicken sandwich to $16.95 for a grilled Ribeye steak. This trip is always popular--so be sure to sign up quickly. Lunch cost is on your own and transportation is $12.00, which will be billed to your monthly fee. Deadline to sign up or cancel is Sunday, August 21st.

The Ballparks We Grew Up InTuesdays in August – 2, 9, 16 & 3010:30 AMLocation: Rising Classroom

With slides and video clips, we will visit eight of the most well attended stadiums that were the home of a Major League Baseball team in 1955. A few are still used today, but most have disappeared. We will review facts about each stadium, and great moments at them during the 1950s and ‘60s. Participants who went to games at these ballparks during that era will be invited to share a few experiences. Everyone is welcome to wear ball caps, shirts, etc. that you may have for your favorite baseball teams.

August 2 -Milwaukee County Stadium, Yankee StadiumAugust 9 - Ebbets Field, Kansas City Municipal StadiumAugust 16 - Polo Grounds, Comiskey Park August 30 - Wrigley Field, Fenway Park

While growing up in New Jersey, Larry Griswold saw games at the Polo Grounds, Yankee Stadium, Forbes Field, and other big league ballparks. Later, working for Sports Illustrated, he met and talked to baseball players he’d watched in those games. He has been teaching sports history courses at OLLI Asheville for fi ve years, and in February was the subject of an Asheville Citizen-Times story about his class on the history of the Super Bowl.

Next Ladies Book Club SelectionThe Ladies Book Club is having a great time together! Much discussion was had about which books to read over the next few months and the ones below were chosen. The books will be decided three to four months in advance so everyone will have a chance to read them.

• August: The Giver by Lois Lowry

• September: The Language Of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

• October: The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

• November: The Invention Of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

• December: Christmas Jars by Jason F. Wright

The group meets the fi rst Wednesday of each month at 1:30 PM in the Stuenkel Living Room on the second fl oor of Asbury Commons. All Givens Estates ladies are welcome! Call Margaret Limondin at 702-1206 with questions. Below is an editorial review of their next book, The Giver by Lois Lowry.

The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most infl uential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he

begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Lois Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, including Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

Save the date!Sending Forth CelebrationTuesday, September 20, 2016 7:00 PMLocation; Performing Arts Center

Please help us celebrate their future at a new Givens community as they move into beautiful new homes we know they will enjoy. Mark your calendars for this very special event!

Dog Exercise Area at Givens Health CenterAs warmer weather has arrived we want to remind everyone of the dog exercise area located beside the Givens Health Center. To get to the dog park, turn onto Barrett Lane and continue towards the Health Center until you see the fi rst utility shed on your right. There are parking spots in front of this building. “Why the World Matters” with Dr. Willem de VogelThursday, August 11th10:30 AMLocation: Performing Arts Center

"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players", - - - and the resulting interplay of today's global political, fi nancial, and environmental events created by those players has led to complex dynamics of epic proportions regarding the tension, concern and disorder being played out upon that stage!

"Why the World Matters" is to be the subject of Willem de Vogel's next presentation to the Givens Community when he will be giving us a comprehensive overview of "the state of the world".

Mr. de Vogel recently returned from a week-long fact-fi nding mission to the Baltic states as a member of a 14-person delegation from the Jamestown Foundation, (Washington D.C.), which was led by fellow-member, U.S. Air Force General, (Retired), Michael V Hayden, former Director of both the CIA and the National Security Agency, and former Deputy Director of National Intelligence.

The group's meetings with the U.S. European Army Commander, the Ambassadors and staff of the U.S. Embassies in each of the Baltic states, high-level Baltic offi cials including the Presidents of Lithuania and Estonia, the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, the Defense Ministers and/or Defense Commanders of the three Baltic states, as-well-as other distinguished persons in-and-out of government, provided the delegation with valuable insight to the three-fold purpose of their trip, which was: (1) To learn more about NATO's defense posture in the Baltic states; (2) To gain an understanding of the threat posed by an aggressive Russia; and, (3) To assess the level of engagement of the U.S. in the Baltic states.

Previously, Mr. de Vogel has presented powerful presentations to the Givens Community on "Why

Ukraine Matters", (2014), and "Why Egypt Matters", (2015), following similar fact-fi nding tours he made with Jamestown Foundation members to those respective countries.

The Jamestown Foundation is an independent, non-partisan research institution that provides timely information about critical political and strategic developments in China, Russia, Eurasia, as-well-as the world of terrorism. Mr. de Vogel has served as Chairman of the Foundation's Board of Directors since 2009.

In addition to his years of dedication to the work of the Jamestown Foundation, Mr. de Vogel's knowledge of world affairs has long been fueled by a voracious appetite for world history along with his past educational and professional experience.

A native of the Netherlands, upon completing his primary education there, Mr. de Vogel was selected as one of two students from that country to attend Atlantic College in Wales, (one of sixteen United World Colleges located throughout the world). Next, he graduated with a Licence es Sciences Politiques from the Institut des Haute Etudes Internationales in Geneva before coming to America to earn his MBA from the University of Chicago. Upon graduating from that institute he worked, briefl y, for a major bank before being asked to form the Private Equity Division of Three Cities Research, Inc., (New York City), which he headed until 2004, at which time he became the Senior Partner before retiring in 2013. He has served on many corporate boards in the U.S. And in Europe, and continues to serve on a number of not-for-profi t boards.

You are encouraged to ask questions following Mr. de Vogel's talk, and, afterwards, to visit informally with both him and his wife, Marion, (daughter of Givens' resident, Diana Latta), while enjoying light refreshments.

Being Mortal: Medicine And What Matters In The End By Atul Gawande"Nobody is getting out of this world alive", our hospice team would banter on a particularly diffi cult day with too many losses. But what lead up to this fi nal day for each person we served? What choices were made in the last year(s) of life? Did those choices make for the best quality of life until the end? Dr. Atul Gawande explores these specifi c concerns in his most recent book.

Most of us indulge in magical thinking, "I'll live until I just die", denying that there is often a long period of decline before death. The average American spends a year or more disabled, living in an institutional setting before death. Dr. Gawande describes how, beginning in the early 30's, various organs naturally begin to slow down as if programmed. He writes about how our eyes, teeth, heart, etc.begin to age and decline gradually but unrelentingly until we eventually just wear out. He praises the work of geriatricians, whose numbers go down while the need for their skills grows greater. They deal with people with intractable health problems, helping to make aging more manageable.

Exploring nursing homes. assisted living units, and family home care, Dr. Gawande is concerned with people being able to retain their uniquenss and personhood while too often the institution's goal is safety. He writes about new and innovative approaches in some settings, concluding that for those who are reasonabley healthy and can afford it "there is not a better time in history to be old". "The waning days of our lives are given over to treatments that addle our brains and sap our bodies for a sliver's chance of benefi t. Our reluctance to honestly examine the experience of aging and dying has increased the harm we infl ict on people and deny them basic comforts they need the most." With a knowing eye and compassionate understanding, Dr. Gawande guides the reader through a seldom recognized time of life.

Review by Givens Estates resident Carole Klein, formerly assistant director of pediatric nursing, University Hospitals, Cleveland, Ohio, executive director of Hospice of the Lowcountry, Hilton Head, S.C.

Resident Advisory Task Force for Security Resident-to-Resident Security Education is a new endeavor of the Resident Advisory Task Force for Security. Security experts have found that adults know many common-sense approaches to being safe and secure. After all, adults have taught their children and grandchildren these things.

A Resident to Resident Security reminder, Tip 2: LOCK YOUR VEHICLE! The National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration (NHTSA) launches its annual Vehicle Theft Prevention campaign in

July because more vehicles are stolen then than in any other month. The cost of stolen vehicle crime is pegged at more than $4.1 billion. Don’t make it easy for car thieves. Never leave your vehicle unlocked and do not leave valuables in plain sight. For more information about car safety, go to safercar.gov.

Fridays at 11:30 - Registration required; Moving to Heal with Annie Lowry- coming soon on Fridays at 1:00 PM, beginning August 19.

Betsy then reviewed the Givens Estates Health & Wellness Philosophy. Please see the front of your Resident Handbook to read this statement in its entirety.

Robin then reviewed the Givens Estates Mission Statement and our Core Values.

David Smith, Grounds Director, gave an update on Duke Energy. Givens Estates recently had an encouraging and productive meeting with Duke Energy. They expressed that they do not want to jeopardize our community and are exploring additional options that would be a more positive outcome for Givens Estates and still allow them to accomplish their goals. We will be scheduling a follow up meeting with them soon and will continue to update you as we learn more. While we were encouraged by our recent meeting with them, we would still encourage everyone to sign the petition, if you have not had a chance to previously do so.

David then gave a Security Update. The Security Risk Assessment has been completed. Two individuals made multiple trips to Givens Estates during the month of June to accomplish this thorough assessment. John Cowan and David will review the document upon John’s return from vacation. After this review, we will follow up with

meetings with the staff Security Committee and the Resident Advisory Task Force for Security. We will plan to update the community on the results of the assessment at the August Campus Gathering.

David gave an update on the construction of the new Woodshop. The existing wood shop is scheduled to be moved by the end of this week. The new wood shop will be located where the current children’s playground is located adjacent to the Greenhouse. We have submitted Grading and Zoning Plans to the City of Asheville for their review and have signed a contract with Morton Buildings to construct a new shop. We anticipate the building will be completed by the winter of 2017.

The Campus Gathering was adjourned. The next meeting of the Campus Gathering will be Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in the Performing Arts Center.
