The town council is delighted with the results achieved in recent months.

Once again, August was the busiest month of the summer with 80% occu-pation, followed by July (64.41%) and June (46.11%) which saw the biggest percentage increase in comparison to summer 2010 when occupation reached 44.25%.

Street entertainment, jazz per-formances, open-air cinema and sports activities are just a few of the wide range of varied activities that were organised for tourists and residents.

One of these, which was entitled “A musical summer”, featured jazz and blue concerts courtesy of the Teu-lada-Moraira Lions Club. Delighted listeners were treated to several concerts that took place on the sea-front promenade by the Castle with their band Manhatton Jazz and Vora-mar Music Street Jazz Festival.

This festival took place in a num-ber of spots in different streets. The first was held in the pergola on the l’Ampolla beach with the band “So de mar”, continued on the seafront promenade by the castle with “Nova Müsica”, in the square de la Sort with the group “Chamaleon” and ended in the street Barranquet with a per-formance by local band “Berenguer Brass” and in the street la Mar with

live music courtesy of “Jazztembé”. Also, in the Town Council square

we had the opportunity to enjoy a traditional dance performance by the Grup de Danses Font San-

ta, which performed its “Aplec de Danses”, captivating an audience of hundreds of spectators. Entitled “A summer of cinema” a varied offer of current films was screened in the open air. The venues chosen were the Town Hall sqaure in Teulada (performances on Fridays) and in Moraira in avenida Doctor Calatayud (performances on Wednesdays).

The fun continued with “A sporting summer” where citizens were able to do keep fit exercises and tai chi on the beach throughout the summer. Tennis lovers fought it out in the “Night Tennis Tournament” on the Solpark tennis courts. There were also sailing competitions for small children and the traditional “Swim across the port”, which attracted numerous participants, just as it does every year.

Moraira CastleFor the first time, Moraira Castle

stayed open all summer as a tour-ist information point and the audio-visual “The sea and piracy” was also screened inside in several languag-es. These many options are evidence of the Town Council’s determination to do everything possible to im-prove the quality of its services and projects for visitors and residents, which has a knock-on beneficial ef-fect on the local economy.

October 2011

Teulada mayor Antoni Joan Bertomeu has been elected president of the Cultural Community of the Marina Alta (Mancomunitat Cultural de la Marina Alta (MACMA)) for next four years.

Because this district has such ex-cellent cultural potential, Mr Ber-tomeu is delighted to have been chosen to represent the 33 muni-cipalities belonging to the Com-munity. Antoni Joan said he was very excited about this new stage

and believes that all the MACMA municipalities will work hard to achieve the cultural policy that the district deserves. MACMA was le-gally constituted in 1997 by 15 mu-nicipalities but Teulada and other municipalities joined in 1998. All 33 municipalities in the Marina Alta are now members.

Among MACMA’s core objectives are to advertise cultural program-ming in the district, to promote the district’s existing resources and to build new places for cultural ex-change that generate processes to stimulate culture.

His presidency of MACMA will draw even more attention to the cultural programme scheduled for

our municipality, particularly with regard to the Auditori.

A total of 825 infants and primary school pupils started the new school year on the 8th of Sep-tember at the Sant Vicent Ferrer school in Teulada and the Cap d´Or school in Moraira.

A total of 580 boys and girls enrolled at the school in Teulada, which has 19 classrooms for primary pupils and

nine for infants, a sports area and a school canteen.

There will be 245 pupils studying at the Cap D’Or school in Moraira this year, a similar number to last year. The school has three infant units and seven primary units, a school canteen, sports area, school garden and a flat for the janitor.

The Adult Training Centre (EPA) will also be offering basic and secondary school courses this years, as well as a wide range of courses and workshops.

Grants for school transport To coincide with the beginning of

the course, mayor Antoni Joan Ber-tomeu announced the approval of a travel grant for students on required curriculum courses (university, pre-university and intermediate and higher studies) outside the town for the 2010-2011 academic year. With this initiative, the Town Council is aiming to help families with children in the education system who have to travel outside the municipality to be able to attend classes.

SECONDARY EDUCATION Around 600 secondary school

students went back to the Secondary School (IES) in Teulada on 14 Septem-ber for the new 2011-2012 school year. This year there are 70 students more than there were last year. Of these, a total of 45% are foreigners.

The purpose of this newsletter is to present and share with you to-day, everything the town council is doing in our municipality in a direct, approachable way.

As your council, we have a duty and responsibility to keep our citizens up-to-date with the way we are manag-ing the municipality, which is why we have made great efforts to launch this publication.

We want to use these pages to ex-plain, first hand, how we are your in-vesting time, work and money to im-prove services and infrastructures in our town, efforts that will lead to a better of quality of life for all resi-dents of Teulada-Moraira.

This first edition has been created with the satisfaction of seeing that the efforts we make every day are bear-ing fruit, results that are obvious just by taking a walk along our streets or chatting to the people who live here. I am particularly happy with the work we have done over recent months to bring a branch of the Official School of Languages to Teulada, a service we have never had before. We have managed to give jobs to unemployed residents through programmes to en-courage employment. We are going to give grants for school transport, we have stepped up school sporting ac-tivities and we have prepared a fan-tastic cultural schedule for the sec-ond season of the Auditorium.

I am sure that this newsletter will enable us to offer information about public services and to fulfil our obli-gation which is to keep our residents informed.

Kind regards

Antoni Joan BertomeuMajor

10 people found work this summer through different job creation schemes requested by the Town Council.

The Special Plan to Strength-en Prevention of Forest Fires (Epamar) 2011, driven by Servef, led to the creation of new forest brigade this summer, consisting of five labourers who have cleaned up and cleared different parts of the municipal area. Specifically, this work involved pruning, selective clearing of undergrowth and clean-ing up wooded spots around the municipal area, mainly in the Sa-

batera and Les Sorts districts. The programme received a grant worth 12,038 euros.

In the meantime, thanks to EM-CORP 2011, the town council will be able to offer employment to four garden labourers till the 4th of Jan-uary. The workers will be pruning

and maintaining gardens and pub-lic roads in the municipal area. The programme received a 38,449 eu-ros grant. This team will be provid-ing support services to the General Services and to the Infrastructures department for five months. They will maintain and clear gardens, get rid of weeds, prune trees and bush-es in gardens and along the roads in the municipality.

Finally, Teulada Town Council’s Social Services Department has had an auxiliary technician through the Salari-Jovi 2011 Programme to Encourage Employment run by the Department of the Economy, Treas-ury and Employment.
