Infants joint construction

Yesterday Mrs Calabria did craft with us. The focus of the activity was medieval knights. We made a shield. We cut out of cardboard and covered it in foil. We cut out some symbols, coloured them and pasted them onto the shield. We also painted armour to dress our knight. We

put glitter on the knee-pads, belt and shield. They look awesome!

Leadership

School Captains- Eliza Burcham and Jordan Boyd

On the 30th- 31st March the Year 6 leaders of Griffith and district schools will be going to Sydney for a Young Leaders Conference. Special guest speakers include Bob Carr, Andy Griffith and Ita Buttrose.

Bob Carr is the longest continuously serving Premier in New South Wales history. He served as Leader of the Opposition from 1988 until his election as Premier in March 1995. He was successfully re-elected and claimed an historic third four-year term. He retired from politics in 2005.

Andy Griffiths is one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors. He has written more than 20 books, including nonsense verse, short stories, comic novels and plays. Andy is best known as the author of the much-loved Just! Series and The Day My Bum Went Psycho. In 2008 he became the first Australian author to win six children’s choice awards in one year for Just Shocking! smashing his previous record of four awards for The Bad Book in 2005.

Ita Buttrose is a truly exceptional Australian: a legendary media editor, businesswoman, best-selling author, committed community and welfare contributor and 2013 Australian of the Year; Ita Buttrose was the youngest ever Editor of The Australian Women's Weekly, the first woman to ever edit a newspaper in Australia Sydney Daily & Sunday Telegraphs, and the first woman director of News Limited.

This is sure to be a great experience with inspirational stories from such highly acclaimed Australians. With leader ship being their underlying theme, no doubt we will learn some great tips to guide our leadership skills.

P&C NEWS

Next meeting March 17h, 7.30pm at the School.

The primary students have been working hard to construct an actual castle at Binya School! It will be complete with a working moat, surrounded by blue skies, dragons and water. Our little ‘knights in shiny armour’ will soon be mounted along the walls to protect our community ;-)

“The Great Reading Wall of Binya” is under construction! Our first two bricks have been laid by Ben and Harry Rowston who have

been devouring the Captain Underpants series!

Captain Underpants is a children’s novel series by American author and illustrator, Dav Pilkey. The series revolves around two fourth graders, George Beard and Harold Hutchins, and

Captain Underpants, an aptly named superhero from one of George & Harold's comic books, that accidentally becomes real when George and Harold hypnotize their megalomaniacal principal, Mr. Krupp.

The book series includes 10 books and 3 spin-offs. These crazy books are light, fun reading for anyone with a wicked sense of humour!

And remember community members, you too can keep reading and send in your details, so we can add you to our Great Reading Wall of Binya! The children love to see you additions

Percy Jackson (Fantasy)

Join the adventures of Percy Jackson and his demigod friends as they fight mythological

monsters and the forces of the titan lord Kronos.

Everything that you loved about Harry Potter is in this book, but not in the haphazard, copycat, money-maker way that some other series have. This is totally original and you will find yourself with the same love of Camp Half-blood that you had for Hogwarts. While this book is for children it is meaty. It has substance, thoughtful characters, interesting plots, and intricate world readers can’t get enough of. Enjoyed by both boys and girls who are fans of Greek mythology. Like Narnia and Deltora series, Riordan also appreciates the prominent featuring of strong female characters.

Rick Riordan is a bestselling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, the Kane Chronicles, and the Heroes of Olympus. Riordan turned to children's fiction when he started The Lightning Thief as a bedtime story for his oldest son. In 2011, Rick received the Children's Choice Book Award for Author of the Year. Reading level: Ages 10 and up

Fantasy novels more often have strong characters that use intelligence, skill and strength to overcome an adversity. Many are based around male and female characters that solve problems together. This genre is a positive in portraying strengths of male and female role models.

Teacher Talk

Spelling Tip of the week:

Maths teaching has been an evolving process in developing the ‘thinking’ and reasoning, using a range of strategies to solve maths questions. As a result we practise ‘skip counting’ to count forward and back in groups to work out addition and subtraction, or to help in forming groups for multiplication and division. Other strategies we develop are ‘counting on’, ‘doubling’, ‘halving’, ‘double and double again’ etc. Throughout this term we will be sending home some information and explanations to help families understand the language your children use at school.
