About DBT:
The setting up of a separate Department of Biotechnology (DBT), under the Ministry of
Science and Technology in 1986 gave a new impetus to the development of the field of
modern biology and biotechnology in India. In more than a decade of its existence, the
department has promoted and accelerated the pace of development of biotechnology in the
country. Through several R&D projects, demonstrations and creation of infrastructural
facilities a clear visible impact of this field has been seen. The department has made
significant achievements in the growth and application of biotechnology in the broad areas of
agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment, and industry.
Title of the Project: DBT’s Mission for Quality Planting Material Production and Utilization
for the North –East.
Objectives
• Production of tissue culture quality planting material with inputs of bio-fertilizer and
bio-pesticides etc in the N-E Region.
• Setting up of quality farms for the identified products in each NE state.
• Strengthen of tissue culture infrastructure base and establishment of institutional
linkages for effective implementation
• Establishing marketing linkages for value products
• Upliftment of socio- economic condition of the farmers through employment and
income generation.
Functions
• Production of quality planting material of commercial value.
• Establishment of quality farms along with SHG /NGO/Farmers who would be
actively able to implement the field level activities.
• Impart training and regular monitoring in the demonstration polyhouse to collect data
and information.
Achievements
• Farmers has been selected from different NGO’s /SHG etc
• Production of more than 50,000 Cymbidium Tissue Cultured plantlets completed and
distributed to the beneficiaries.
• Established 5 no. of demonstration polyhouses at different districts in Sikkim in
which 55 no. of beneficiaries are involved for the cultivation of Cymbidium Orchids.
• Training and demonstration work has been conducting regularly in the field.
