A ndrew Gurkin runs the family-owned business, Dandy Haven Marina, which has been an institution for 47 years in Hampton, VA. Owning a

water-oriented business, Andrew and his mother, Lesley, make strong efforts to be good stewards of their environment. As in the previous year, one persistent osprey decided that the Marine Travelift was the perfect place to build her nest. Unfortunately, that piece of equipment is used regularly to move boats to and from the water and the repair yard. On March 14, 2010 while preparing an unused forklift and pallet for the nesting site, Andrew got his arm caught between two sections of the mast, crushing the humerus just above the elbow. Later, he jokingly remarked “No good deed goes unpunished.” While wife, Melanie, ran to call 9-1-1, Andrew found his arm to be hanging limp by his side but managed to lower himself to the hood of the forklift. After a quick evaluation by the Hampton paramedics, they immediately called Nightingale to transport Andrew to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. “When things go horribly wrong, access to a Level I Trauma Center is paramount,” said Andrew. He wasn’t sure if he would survive, much less have use of his arm again. With a team of trauma, vascular, orthopaedic and plastic surgeons working collaboratively through four operations, Andrew was back at work soon after leaving the hospital, making an

almost full recovery in six months.

In the 11 days he spent at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Andrew was surprised by the number of times Nightingale took off each day and realized how critical the air ambulance service is to Hampton Roads residents. Appreciating the “force multiplier effect” that Nightingale has for Sentara Norfolk General and the region, Andrew, Melanie, Lesley and the Dandy Haven Marina made very generous contributions to support the Nightingale: Saving Minutes, Saving Lives campaign. Upgrading the technology and power of the Nightingale will keep this bird flying and saving lives for many years to come!

When firefighter Jason Fletcher’s daughters were ina severe motor vehicle accident, it was his fellow

rescuers on nightingale that responded.

Jason Fletcher is an elizabeth City firefighter and Weeksville volunteer firefighter. His experience with the

Nightingale Air Ambulance involved his own daughter Katie, who is 18 years old and alive because of the care and service provided by the Nightingale crew. Two years ago, Katie was 16; she went to Northeastern High School, had a job at the Dollar Tree, had a boyfriend, and was an honor student. At the time, she thought she might want to study pharmacy and work in that field. She was a very special girl with a normal teenage life.

But that changed on January 7, 2009.On that day, around 7:30 am, just like every other day, Katie was waking up to get ready to take her younger sister, Laura, to River Road Middle School before heading to class herself. At 7:50 am, Jason had just arrived for duty when he received a call from his wife, erin, informing him that the girls had been in an accident on Weeksville Road. Jason ran out of the station and quickly found the accident scene. He determined that Laura was okay, but he wasn’t sure if Katie was alive.

It took 15 minutes for Jason and the other eMT’s to cut Katie free from the car. They placed her on the back board then into the ambulance to take her to the station where Nightingale could land safely. Katie stopped breathing twice in the ambulance and when the Nightingale crew arrived they had to work on her to get her stable enough to transport. “even with that extra time to stabilize her, the Nightingale got her to Sentara Norfolk General before me which I know, as a firefighter, made a huge difference. In these cases, time is of the essence,” says Jason.

After four hours of surgery for a traumatic brain injury, Katie was moved to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and began her recovery. She spent 30 days in the hospital. During that time, the Nightingale crew never stopped checking in, helping the family, even takingsix-year-old brother, Jamison, to sit inside the helicopter.

It has taken Katie two long years of hard work to recover, and she’s still working very diligently to get back all of her speech and physical abilities. Katie went back to school as a different person but with more determination. She graduated with honors and even received a special courage award from her fellow students at the senior banquet. Now she is taking art and photography classes and volunteers at the YMCA. She has even faced her fears enough to start driving again. Jason Fletcher sumed up his thoughts with “We are truly blessed and grateful that Nightingale was here when we needed them. They took care of my daughter and my family. They rescued this rescuer!”

Too many good-byes inspires event to fund cancer medications for those in need.

A fter a losing a close friend and three

family members to cancer, the Stallings family felt that it was time to take action. They knew it was time to make a difference. So, what began as a summer pool party has now turned into an annual fundraiser at their home with hundreds of donors.

Their heartbreak began from having to say so many good-byes to loved ones; a close friend with a rare form of cancer, two aunts with cancer, and an uncle with prostate cancer. The Stallings decided to support cancer causes with an annual fun-filled pool party. The yearly festivities include a live band, catering, and upwards of five hundred guests.

All the event proceeds are sent to various cancer programs.They also organized Jazz for the Cure, to further supportcancer research.

Hundreds gather annually to have fun and support the Stallings’ philanthropic efforts to raise money for cancer programs.

Mr. Stallings hopes to pass on to his children the message that everyone can do something to help others and help improve cancer treatment and care.

Donations like the ones from the Stallings aid patients who are unable to afford the cost of medical supplies and medications that are not covered by

insurance. Medical advances continue to develop, and help physicians and other specialists better understand cancer, detect it earlier and treat the disease more effectively. The Sentara Cancer Network has been at the forefront of making these cancer advances available in Hampton Roads.

Today, the Stallings have a sister who is in remission from colon cancer after a year of treatment. They celebrate her survival as well as the memories of those who are gone with their signature events and the belief that anyone can give, anyone can help. Mr. Stallings hopes that through their giving example others will see that “even those who have a little can give a little.”

After 25 years of service, the current Nightingale Air Ambulance is readyto retire. You can help support a new air ambulance that will be able

to provide more advanced service to our community and beyond.

Sentara Healthcare employee Leslie Peterfeso doesn’t remember the limb

falling and striking her in the head. Nor does she remember the ride from her house in the Sentara Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance.

While holding the ladder for her husband, who was cutting a large limb hanging over their carport, a large branch fell and struck her on the top of the head, making a Y-shaped tear in her scalp and knocking her unconscious. Leslie fell and hit the concrete which caused more lacerations and a black eye. Today, she still suffers from vertigo as a result of the injury.

Leslie’s husband performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on her for approximately 10 minutes until the rescuers arrived. After assessing the situation, the local paramedics immediately called the Nightingale to rush Leslie to SNGH for treatment. She sustained a concussion and received stitches on her face

and staples in her head. Without the quick paramedic response and the short flight to SNGH, Leslie may not have been able to return to her normal routine as quickly as she did.

Leslie’s family is no stranger to the Nightingale Air Ambulance services. Four days after Leslie’s accident, the Nightingale was summoned to her sister’s horse farm eight miles away when a rider fell off her horse and suffered a head injury. Additionally, a couple of years ago Nightingale was called to the farm for another head injury that was even more serious and truly life-threatening.

Her family is relieved and proud to see that their local medical team is so proficient

and they are grateful to the paramedics in Suffolk and to the Nightingale for such fast action. They feel lucky that they have quick access to a trauma center like SNGH, even though they live in a remote and heavily wooded area.

Leslie Peterfeso is grateful for the quick response by local paramedics and the

Nightingale as well as for the care providedby Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

For example, your donation can help pay for nutritional supplements for cancer patients, rides home from the hospital for those who have none, and special garments to promote healing in burn victims.
