Welcome once more to a new Birds and Natural History catalog. This year there’s a particularly rich spread of titles reflecting the growing diversity of the list here at Princeton. It’s a delight to have a new edition of Hadoram Shirihai’s The Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife, which has become established as the go-to reference for all visitors, combining a wealth of illustration and an authoritative, detailed text. In our own backyard, Duane Sept’s A Photographic Guide to Seashore Life in the North Atlantic provides a beautifully illustrated, great-value guide for all levels of beachcomber from Canada to New England. Sharon Chester’s A Wildlife Guide to Chile sets new standards in dedicated country guides with an impressive blend of insightful and informative text and wonderfully attractive illustrations and photographs, tackling plants, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, fish, and much more.

We also have two important and timely new mammal guides, Smith and Xie’s A Guide to the Mammals of China and Charles Francis’ s A Guide to the Mammals of Southeast Asia. These two references are the first to provide up-to-the-minute information on the threatened mammal fauna of these regions, both of which are rich in species but under acute environmental pressure. Changing pace, we also have a terrific book on spiders by Paul Hillyard. The Private Life of Spiders provides a fascinating insight into the extraordinary natural history of spiders across the globe, and is illustrated with breathtak-ing photographs. And not to forget the birds, we have two new titles for our Princeton Field Guide series to be published later this year: Birds of Mongolia and Birds of East Asia, both of which will plug real holes in our coverage of the world’s avifauna.

Life in Cold BloodDavid Attenborough

“A treasure trove for everyone—from the child seeing flying dragons or man-eat-ing crocodiles for the first time to the professional zoologist realizing that there is still much to learn.”—Philip Rainbow, Natural History Museum, London

Life in Cold Blood offers a rare glimpse into the peculiar world of amphibians and reptiles, the first vertebrate creatures to venture forth from the primeval waters millions of years ago, yet which today include species that are the most at risk of extinction. Join acclaimed naturalist Sir David Attenborough as he travels to the far corners of the Earth to tell the epic story of these animals in this companion to the television series. Attenborough gets up close and personal with the living descendants of the first vertebrates ever to colonize the land, and through them traces the fascinating history of their pioneering ancestors. He explains the ways amphibians and reptiles have changed little from their prehistoric forebears while also demonstrating how they have adapted and evolved into diverse new forms.

Sir David Attenborough is one of the best-loved naturalists of our time. He is the author of numerous books and has hosted many world-renowned and award-winning natural history documentaries.

Birds of Europe, Russia, China, and JapanPasserines: Tyrant Flycatchers to BuntingsWritten and Illustrated by Norman Arlott

This is the first of two field guides illustrating and describing all of the approximately 1,800 bird species found in the Palearctic—the huge region that includes Europe, Asia north of the Himalayas, and Africa north of the Sahara. This area spans the countries of the former Soviet Union, all of the Russian Arctic, China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and the Middle East excluding the Gulf countries. This first volume covers all the passerines (perching birds, from tyrant flycatchers to buntings) or songbirds and will soon be followed by a companion guide to the nonpasserines (divers to woodpeckers). These volumes are the first and only field guides for many parts of the area covered, and mark the first time all of these birds have been included in a single pair of books.

Norman Arlott, one of the world’s leading bird artists, has illustrated close to 100 books, and his artwork regularly appears in magazines. He has led ornithology tours in East Africa, and has designed special bird stamp issues for many countries, including Jamaica, the Bahamas, Gambia, and Malawi.

2007. 240 pages. 80 color plates. 706 maps. 5 x 7 ½. Pa: 978-0-691-13372-0 $29.95For sale only in North America and the Philippines

“The books are compact, convenient guides for birders and scientists interested in identifying birds while visiting the regions. Their small, lightweight sizes make for easy packing and carrying in the back pocket while trudging around the countryside. They are the perfect alternative to the larger guides that are too large for travelling and often have more information than is necessary for field identification.”—Condor

Series Features Include:u The most up-to-date and comprehensive checklists to over 3,000 species across much of Africa, South America, and Antarctica, about a third of the world totalu Color plates illustrating all species, with subspecies and variations included for manyu Text opposite the plates concisely describes each bird’s physical features, behavior, habitat, and voiceu Female or juvenile shown for many species in addition to adult maleu Shaded maps showing range and frequency of each species

Birds of PeruThomas S. Schulenberg, Douglas F. Stotz, Daniel F. Lane, John P. O’Neill & Theodore A. Parker III

“[I]f any places needed a field guide, it was Peru, second only to Columbia as the most bird-rich country in the world . . . [The Birds of Peru] is the culmination of an incredible amount of fieldwork.”—Don Stap,

Audubon Magazine

Nearly eighteen hundred different bird spe-cies—one fifth of the world’s birds—have been recorded in Peru. Birds of Peru is the most complete and well-researched field guide to this rich and fascinating diversity. It illustrates every one of the 1,792 species and shows the distinct plumages of each. It includes 304 superb, high-quality color plates directly opposite concise descriptions and color distribution maps, making it much easier to use in the field than standard neotropical field guides. The detailed text discusses key identification features, status, distribution, and vocalizations for all species, and many subspecies.

Thomas S. Schulenberg and Douglas F. Stotz are ornithologists and conservation ecologists at the Field Museum in Chicago. Daniel F. Lane and John P. O’Neill are illustrators and field ornithologists, and both are research associates at the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science. Theo-dore A. Parker III was the premier neotropical field ornithologist of his time, who worked throughout Peru before his death in 1993.

Albatrosses, Petrels and Shearwaters of the WorldDerek Onley & Paul Scofield

This is the first comprehensive field guide to the world’s 136 species of albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, storm petrels, and diving petrels. Because many of these birds spend most of their lives far from the coast, traveling from ocean to ocean in a

constant search for food, they are enigmatic. This guide illustrates every species and shows the distinct plumages of each. It contains 46 high-quality color plates opposite concise descriptions and a color distribution map, with more com-plete species descriptions following.

u A comprehensive guide to all 136 species of open-ocean seabirds, with subspecies and morphs fully illustratedu Designed for field use, with concise informa tion opposite plates, and close- and long- range identification tipsu Confusion species included on plates to aid accurate identificationu Detailed species accounts, including a color distribution map for each speciesu Full treatment of recently rediscovered and rarely seen species

Derek Onley is an internationally acclaimed wild-life artist who specializes in seabirds. He has illus-trated more than a dozen books, including Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand. Paul Scofield is curator of vertebrate zoology at Canterbury Museum in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Seashells of Southern FloridaLiving Marine Mollusks of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Regions: BivalvesPaula M. Mikkelsen & Rüdiger Bieler

The Florida Keys are home to nearly sixty taxonomic families of bivalves such as clams and mus-sels—roughly half the world’s bivalve family diversity. The first in a series

of three volumes on the molluscan fauna of the Keys and adjacent regions, Seashells of Southern Florida: Bivalves provides a comprehensive treatment of these bivalves, and also serves as a comparative anatomical guide to bivalve diversity worldwide.

Paula Mikkelsen and Rüdiger Bieler cover more than three hundred species of bivalves, including clams, scallops, oysters, mussels, shipworms, jewel boxes and tellins. For each family they select an exemplar species and illustrate its shell and anatomical features in detail. They accom-pany each species account with high-resolution shell photographs of other family members. The book includes fifteen hundred mostly color photographs and images of shells, underwater habitats, bivalves in situ, original anatomical and hinge drawings, scanning electron micrographs, and unique transparent-shell illustrations with major organ systems color-coded and clearly shown.

Paula M. Mikkelsen is a marine biologist and director of publications at the Paleontological Research Institution in Ithaca, New York. Rüdiger Bieler is an evolutionary biologist and curator of invertebrates at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

Exploring Animal Social NetworksDarren P. Croft, Richard James & Jens Krause

“An important and timely addition to the literature. This book should be readily accessible to researchers who are interested in animal social organization but who have little or no experience in conducting network analysis. The book is well-written in an engaging style and contains a good number of examples drawn from a range of taxonomic groups.”—Paul R. Moorcroft, Harvard University

Existing methods for studying animal social structure focus either on one animal and its interactions or on the average properties of a whole population. This book enables researchers to probe animal social structure at all levels, from the individual to the population. No prior knowledge of network theory is assumed. The authors give a step-by-step introduction to the different procedures and offer ideas for designing studies, collecting data, and interpreting results. The authors examine some of today’s most sophisticated statistical tools for social network analysis and show how they can be used to study social interactions in animals including cetaceans, ungulates, primates, insects, and fish. They explore how network structures influence individual behavior and how this in turn influences, and is influenced by, behavior at the population level. Throughout, the authors use two software pack-ages—Unicet and netDraw—to illustrate how these powerful analytical tools can be applied to different animal social organizations.

Darren P. Croft is lecturer in animal behavior at the University of Wales, Bangor. Richard James is senior lecturer in physics at the University of Bath. Jens Krause is professor of behavioral ecology at the University of Leeds.

ExtinctionHow Life on Earth Nearly Ended 250 Million Years AgoDouglas H. Erwin

“Douglas Erwin’s geological mystery story is engross-ing. . . . The book ends with Erwin warning that the Earth is arguably entering another mass extinction period, this time unnatural and man-made. And this time the destruction may

well be total.”—Lucy Sussex, The Age (Sunday edition)

“[Erwin’s] accessible new book, Extinction—writ-ten, it seems, both to persuade his colleagues and to educate a lay audience—is told from the perspective of a forensic scientist trying to piece together a quarter-billion-year-old crime scene.”—Joshua Foer, Washington Post Book World

“Extinction provides a great reference for re-searchers and the interested lay reader alike.”—Andrew M. Bush, Science

“[A] very enjoyable read. . . . Extinction leaves the reader with the (accurate) picture that here is a scientist whose work has significantly advanced our understanding of the greatest extinction event known to science.”—Richard J. Twitchett, American Scientist

How and Why Species MultiplyThe Radiation of Darwin’s FinchesPeter R. Grant & B. Rosemary Grant

“A brilliant synthesis. The authors have written a concise summary of current understanding of one of the classic case studies of evo-lutionary diversifica-tion, Darwin’s finches of the Galápagos. I can think of no parallel to this work. This book will be an

inspiration to students. The Grants’ love of the subject and the research comes through clearly.”—Jonathan B. Losos, Harvard University

Charles Darwin’s experiences in the Galápagos Islands in 1835 helped to guide his thoughts toward a revolutionary theory: that species were not fixed, they diversified from their ancestors over many generations, and the driving mecha-nism of evolutionary change was natural selec-tion. In this concise, accessible book, Peter and Rosemary Grant explain what we have learned about the origin and evolution of new species through the study of finches made famous by him: Darwin’s finches.

Written by two preeminent evolutionary biolo-gists, How and Why Species Multiply helps to an-swer fundamental questions about evolution—in the Galápagos and throughout the world.

Peter R. Grant is the Class of 1877 Professor of Zoology at Princeton University. B. Rosemary Grant is a senior research scholar in the Depart-ment of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University.

“How to do Ecology contains much of the sage advice that good supervisors have been giving their postgraduate students for years . . . [I]t’s absolutely correct and vital information.”—Robyn K. Whipp, Austral Ecology

“Karban and Huntzinger cover a wide range of topics: how to formulate research questions, why to get a field notebook and what to put in it, how and why to incorporate observations, experi-ments, and models in your dissertation, how to give a seminar on your work and get your results published. Reading this book feels like having a good talk during a long walk in the woods with a wise and experienced advisor who really has the time to distill and share years of thinking about how ecological research works. What Bugged the Dinosaurs?Insects, Disease, and Death in the CretaceousGeorge Poinar, Jr. & Roberta Poinar

“This is an excellent book. There is no doubt Poinar and Poinar have admirable track records, and they are well known for their sustained and high-quality work on fossil insects, and especially on insects in amber.”—Michael J. Benton,

author of When Life Nearly Died: The Greatest Mass Extinction of All Time

Millions of years ago in the Cretaceous period, the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex—with its dagger-like teeth for tearing its prey to ribbons—was undoubtedly the fiercest carnivore to roam the Earth. Yet as What Bugged the Dinosaurs? reveals, T. rex was not the only killer. George and Roberta Poinar show how the insect world—from biting sand flies to disease-causing parasites—domi-nated life on the planet and played a significant role in the life and death of the dinosaurs.

The Poinars bring the age of the dinosaurs mar-velously to life. Analyzing exotic insects fossilized in Cretaceous amber at three major deposits in Lebanon, Burma, and Canada, they reconstruct the complex ecology of a hostile prehistoric world inhabited by voracious swarms of insects. A scientific adventure story as we’ve come to expect from the authors whose research inspired Jurassic Park, What Bugged the Dinosaurs? offers compelling evidence of how insects directly and indirectly contributed to the dinosaurs’ demise.

George Poinar, Jr. is currently in the Zoology Department at Oregon State University. Roberta Poinar is a retired research scientist.
