Patient safety and empowerment

Patients have right to expect that every effort is made to ensure their safety as users.

Long-standing CPME commitment to these objectives f.e. Luxembourg Declaration on Patient Safety (2005): Need to mainstream Patient Safety.

The patient is the key stakeholder. Accurate information must be based upon international medical science. It is the patient’s right to decide among suggested and proven therapies including medication.

CPME involvement in EIPAHA

CPME is a member of the Steering Committee of the EIPAHA and contributed to the drafting of the Strategic Implementation Plan which identified key action areas to add two extra healthy life years by 2020: • prevention of falls, adherence, functional capacity decline• care and cure • independent living solutions through global standards to help

older people stay independent, mobile and active for longer.

CPME position on Active Ageing

European Innovation Partnership on Healthy and Active Ageing not through a technology-led process, but by analysing the

challenges presented by individual long-term care scenarios, identifying the essential participants in the care pathway, and encouraging their involvement.

A “one-size fits all” approach to chronic care management will fail unless it is practically-based, clearly defines the role of healthcare, social care, carers and patients, and identifies the essential changes in work practices, technology and roles that will be needed.

CPME policies on Active Ageing

Much of the “innovation” required will not be a new form of telemonitoring or telemedicine, (although these are clearly important, and will drive the involvement of industry), but a new way of working horizontally across different clinical disciplines and sectors.

CPME policies on Active Ageing

There is good evidence that patients who can continue to live independently have better health outcomes. Conditions: adequate social support and emotional support.

In addition, families trying to provide care for elderly family members will need support. This may be financial in order to compensate carers or varying kinds of practical support. This is covered in more detail in the CPME Statement on Mental Health in Older People (CPME 2010/105 FINAL).

• To answer the European Commission invitation for commitment and expression of ideas and suggestions with clear objectives and targets, mobilisation of your communities and share best practices. The website of the EIPAHA is: http://ec.europa.eu/health/ageing/innovation/index_en.htm

• The Commission published a "virtual marketplace for innovative ideas" that will help the sharing of good practices and the dissemination of information and evidence. Contributions can be made here: https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/eipaha/.

Next steps where the Active Citizens Network can also get involved
