BIRMINGHAM CAREERS SERVICE NEWSSummer 2016 Edition
Youth Promise Plus is an exciting, new programme which aims to provideadditional support to unemployed youngpeople in Birmingham to move into goodquality jobs with local employers. The Youth Service and the Careers Service will be working together tospread the word about how this extra help and advice could help you. Tofind out more call into your local Youth Centre or a Birmingham CareersService outreach centre (see back page).
HOW BIRMINGHAM CAREERS AND YOUTH SERVICE CAN HELP YOU
“I’m a Birmingham Careers Service Personal Adviser and I help young people to thinkabout their career goals and the steps they need to take to achieve them. Come and seeme at one of our outreach venues and I can talk with you about your career ideas(especially if you’re struggling to think of any) and make sure you know about thedifferent routes and options such as education, training, and apprenticeships. I can helpyou with making applications, writing a CV, interview preparation or whatever support youneed to move on to a course, training or a job. If you need other support, I can introduceyou to services, such as mentoring, benefits advice or a Teen Parent Adviser.’’
“I’m a Youth worker and I know how hard it can be for some young people to thinkabout their career ideas and to cope with pressure from family and friends to get it allsorted out. Sometimes it’s hard to get motivated or to know how to turn a plan intoactions. I can help you with this and offer practical support to get into education, training or employment. It could be something as simple as providing you with a bustoken to get to an interview or you may need help with sorting out somewhere to liveor benefit problems. Of course, if you just want to hang out at our centres or getinvolved in one of our projects or summer activities – then that’s fine too.”
"I was at college but I left after just a few daysbecause I was struggling to keep up. I knewPele was a Careers Adviser because he hadseen me before at the Youth Offending centre. He knew that I had ADHD and understood why Icouldn’t cope with the course. He spoke to allthe people involved and sorted out propersupport for me at college. It took a while tosort out so he suggested that I did a VIYconstruction course at Shard End Youth Centre. It was good fun and made me feel moreconfident about going back to college to startmy construction course. Pele also introducedme to Tom, a mentor from the Youth Servicewho sorted out and paid for English and mathstutoring to get me ready for college and tookme go-carting in half term.I went back to college and things are a wholelot better now that the tutors know what help Ineed. Pele and Tom were really helpful and Iwouldn’t be back on the course if it wasn’t fortheir support. I’m really proud that I didn’t driftback into getting into trouble with the policeand instead I’m moving onto the next level ofmy course in September and applying for apart time jobs."
