    Thank you for your interest in studying atBirmingham City University. I hope that thisInternational Guide will assist you and answerall the questions you have, as well as show youthe wonderful things our University has to offer.

    Birmingham City University has 22,500 students from over 80different countries, studying programmes from a wide range ofdisciplines. We ensure every one of those students feels at homewhile studying here, and if you choose to attend here you will joinan enthusiastic and committed student population.

    Our aim to be placed in the top 10 per cent of research-engageduniversities has been enhanced, following the recent ResearchExcellence Framework (REF) 2014. The report revealed we havedoubled the number of staff producing internationally recognisedresearch, with 11 subjects assessed as internationally excellent.

    The University is currently mid-way through a 260 millioninvestment plan, including a major expansion of our City Centre

    Campus. Our latest state-of-the-art facility, The Curzon Building,is home to our Business, English, Law and Social Science coursesas well as being a hub for our students.

    Were a multicultural city, the second mostdiverse city in the UK after London. We havea wide mix of communities and religions.

    Were 1 hour 20 minutes from London by trainand its easy to get anywhere in the UK byroad or rail, while our airport connects to over120 cities worldwide.

    People travel from all over the UK forBirminghams nightlife. From busy BroadStreet and Brindleyplace to cool bars andcafes, theres something to suit everyone.

    Birmingham is Europes youngest city,with under-25s making up 40 per cent ofthe population.

    My course was great as it provided

    a nice balance between theory and

    The fact the course is focused

    as much as it is on automotive

    engineering, while still covering the

    important parts of a mechanical

    engineering degree, gives the course

    The Parkside Building

    The building has been designed to maximisenatural light and encourage collaborationbetween students on different courses. Itsthe perfect setting for the workshops andteaching spaces of our design courses, aswell as the state-of-the-art media centrefor Birmingham School of Media.

    The Curzon Building

    The latest addition to our City CentreCampus development, The Curzon Buildingforms a new focal point for the University,hosting a superb library and dedicated

    provision for student queries and support.The 24,300 sq m building also offers a newhome to our Business, Law, Social Scienceand English courses.

    Millennium Point

    This landmark building, situated in oneof the largest regeneration zones in theUK, is home to the 4 million purpose-built Birmingham School of Acting andthe workshops, laboratories and teachingspaces used by students on courses fromour Faculty of Computing, Engineering andthe Built Environment.

    Facilities include:

    City North Campus

    This campus is home to our School ofEducation, where students get the feel ofa real school environment. Also here are anumber of the Universitys halls of residenceand our Doug Ellis Sports Centre, whichis open to students on all courses and thewider local community.

    Birmingham School of Art Margaret Street

    Floating mezzanine levels, glass lifts andcutting-edge workspaces sit comfortablybeside the original stained glass windowsand mosaic floors of this glorious purpose-built art school. This Grade I listed VenetianGothic building houses a wonderful complexof traditional-style workshops, teaching andexhibition space.

    Facilities include:

    School of Jewellery Vittoria Street

    One of the most significant jewelleryschools in the world stands in a modernand spacious building right at the heart ofBirminghams famous Jewellery Quarter,

    where much of the jewellery made in Britaintoday is manufactured.Facilities include:

    Soldering hearths and polishing machines Bench-mounted powered equipment

    Lathes and milling machines Floor-to-ceiling windows, providing

    excellent natural light levels Exhibition space and specialist library.

    Birmingham Conservatoire

    Currently, this purpose-built music schoolhas some of the finest performing, teachingand music technology facilities in thecountry. And, with a new 40 million buildingplanned at our City Centre Campus for2017, our students will soon benefit froma new 475-seat concert hall, five publicperformance spaces, private rehearsal andpractice rooms, and teaching spaces formusicians from a variety of disciplines.

    BCUIC Bournville

    Our Bournville site, located in the idyllicsetting of the Bournville Village Trustconservation area, has a 100-year pedigreeas a centre of learning. It is home toBirmingham City University InternationalCollege (see page 16), which providesbespoke pathways for overseas students,leading to undergraduate and postgraduatecourses at the University.

    Your annual tuition fees cover everydaytuition, examination costs and membershipof the Students Union. Half of your fees arepaid at enrolment, and the rest can be paidin instalments, provided you have a UKbank account.

    You will also need to cover your living expenses(in excess of 9,135 for the first nine months ofyour studies or in excess of 1,015 per month*). If you pay your tuition fees in full before

    For undergraduatecourses, you shouldbe educated to a standard comparable toBritish GCSE and/or A Level standard. Somequalifications may enable you to enter ata later stage, for example directly into thesecond or third year.

    If youre applying for postgraduatecourses,you should normally hold a qualificationwhich is comparable to a British Bachelors(Honours) degree.

    If youre applying for a PhD, you shouldhave a Masters degree in an appropriate

    Portfolio guidance

    If the course youre applying for involvessubmitting a portfolio, its important itrepresents the best of your work. Whetherit is produced in physical or digital format,your portfolio should grab peoples attentionand keep viewers interested.

    Your portfolio should include relevantwork and show you have an informedknowledge of the subject. Show yourcreativity, experimentation and risk-taking.

    Give examples of paintings, drawings,photographs, three-dimensional work,time-based work and anything else relevantto the area of practice.

    You should tell a story with your portfolio,and make annotations to show how youresearch and reflect on the developmentof your work.

    If you are sending a digital portfolio, it shouldbe no more than 20 slides, with each slideannotated. Sent via a PDF or PowerPointdocument, the file should be no bigger than20 MB.
