Words of Welcome

Dear Students and Parents Guardians

WE ARE PLEASED AND HoNoURED To WELCoME STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES To oUR DyNAMIC SCHooL CoMMUNITy. From the day that we first opened our doors in September 1989, we have endeavoured

to build our school by grounding ourselves in the core principles of service, leadership

and excellence. Since then, we have grown in numbers and developed unique academic

and extra-curricular programs which have been acknowledged as exemplary practices. It

is with great pride that I say that our 1500 students, 100 teachers and talented support

staff wholeheartedly embrace our school’s vision and remain committed to sustaining

our growth.

As a Catholic community we integrate faith with culture so that every aspect of the

curriculum is taught in light of the Gospel. The spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional

and social development of every student informs our daily life. The energy and creativity

of our staff and students afford us the privilege to continuously reflect on our practices

and regularly celebrate success.

Bishop Allen Academy is an excellent educational setting for the highly motivated student

who enjoys learning. our challenging academic curriculum includes a Congregated

Advanced Placement program with pre-advanced placement (enriched) credit courses

beginning in grade nine and Advanced Placement courses offered in subsequent years

leading to the Advanced Placement Diploma in senior years. our thriving Gifted Program

focuses on academic enrichment, leadership development and community service.

The fact that an impressive number of our graduates are awarded a diverse range of

scholarships is a testament to the rigor of our approach.

We are also proud to be one of only two secondary schools in the TCDSB to offer

an Early Immersion French Program at the secondary level. The Middle Immersion

(Extended) French program is also offered. Upon graduation, our students will be eligible

for either the Immersion French Certificate or the Extended French Certificate awarded by

the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

As a Bishop Allen student, your child will quickly appreciate our deliberate approach

to creating an inclusive learning environment. There is no doubt that our support

mechanisms and genuine investment in student success will nurture the development of

leadership skills which have traditionally characterized the Bishop Allen graduate.

THE CATHoLIC VISIoN AT BISHoP ALLEN ACADEMy IS RooTED IN THE PHILoSoPHy THAT THE GLoRy oF GoD IS HUMANITy FULLy ALIVE. AT BIShoP AllEn ACADEmy, oUr CAll To knoW AnD To FolloW JESUS IS noT JUST An ACADEmIC ACTIVITy -- IT IS INTRINSIC To oUR CULTURE.our students are encouraged to use Christian values to guide them on their life’s journey

and to engage them in a critical quest for truth. As advocated by the ontario Conference

of Bishops in This Moment of Promise, the message presented daily to our students is

that each of them should take up the challenge of growing into a sense of who [they] are

as Christians so that [they] can develop the talents [they] have been given and bring the

best of [themselves] to the society in which [they] will be living.” Through the advocacy

of intellectual growth and the nurturing of faith, it is our hope to inspire a sense of

service to society.

What martin luther king has said about church could also be said of our aspirations

for Bishop Allen students: Bishop Allen Academy is not the place you go to, it is the

place you come from. It is from Bishop Allen that students are sent to be advocates of

compassion and service, addressing those most on the margins of our society. At the

heart of Chaplaincy are the words of St. Theresa of Avila, “Christ has no body but yours.

no hands, no feet on earth but yours.” Chaplaincy helps to animate our students to

make real the Beatitudes of Jesus. Students are called to be self-reflective through our

retreat programs. They are invited to worship through meaningful liturgies. They are

challenged to embrace the world through awareness experiences and charitable actions.

The school year is punctuated by a variety of out-reach activities and celebrations that

instil in our community an awareness of and responsibility for the world:

Christmas Festive Dinner for families new to the country

 Ride for the Cure

 Huntington-CNIB Dinner

 Christmas Homeroom Basket Drive

 Lenten orphanage Commitment to Ethiopia

 Spring Wake-athon

In 2011-2012 Bishop Allen a group of our senior students and staff will travel to a

Guatemala to share in the lives of young people in Central America.

In the words of Father Gregory Boyle, our challenge is to create “a community of kinship,

such that God might recognize it.” It is the call to go into the world “to bend the

world to grace.”

EDUCATIoNAL SERVICES - A FULL INCLUSIoN MoDEL Support for all students is a hallmark of our philosophy at Bishop Allen. Thus, resource

services are provided to students who are formally identified through an IPrC, as well as

students who received remedial support in Grade 8 and those students who are enrolled

in Grade 9 learning Strategies classes.

The method of service and degree of accommodation to be provided is based on IPrC

summaries, exchange of information meetings and an IEP created with ongoing parent

communication. Each student is supported by a resource teacher, and the dialogue

between home and school is paramount. Some students will be supported by an

educational assistant in class and support in the resource centre is available before

school, during classes and lunches, and after school. The staff in the Educational

Services Department is committed to providing the necessary support in a caring and

compassionate manner and strives to ensure success for all of their students.

STUDENT SERVICES - SUPPoRT LEADING To SUCCESSBishop Allen has a very active Student Services Department. There are seven dedicated

staff members in the department, including four counsellors, youth workers and a

secretary. When needed, the staff also works collaboratively with the social worker and

school psychologist. The staff looks forward to meeting with students and their families

in order to ensure a positive and productive high school experience. Department

members are available to support students in a number of ways: helping with course

selection; providing information on graduation requirements and planning for post-

secondary study and career options. Counsellors act as a liaison on behalf of students,

offering assistance and support with peers, classes, workload and personal issues.

Students can visit the department to learn more about post-secondary scholarships,

volunteer and part-time work opportunities and community resources available to

them. The staff also reaches out to the school community by hosting Post-secondary

Application Workshops, a Career Day, Stop the Stigma Week, which aims to raise

awareness of mood disorders among young people, Course Selection Workshops as well

as a College and University Information Evening.

Support for Students

LIBRARy AND DIGITAL RESoURCE CENTRE: research, reading and outreach in the Digital AgeThe focus of the Bishop Allen library program is to foster the three areas of expertise

students require to be successful in the 21St century:

RESEARCH – Bishop Allen students are taught how to access reliable on-line and print

resources. They are also taught how to be responsible digital citizens, through ethical

academic decision-making and conscientious social networking.

READING – “reading is a window to the world,” and at Bishop Allen students are

encouraged to read a broad variety of material available from our collection of over

10,000 fiction and non-fiction books and our ever-growing access to databases

and e-books.

oUTREACH – The Bishop Allen library has traditionally been a centre for outreach,

encouraging students to connect with their community and seek opportunities for

personal growth. And so, the Bishop Allen library is the proud host of the annual

Festival of the Word, a week long event where acclaimed authors and speakers are

invited to share their stories with students. In keeping with the library’s mandate to

foster personal growth, the Bishop Allen library also sponsors the hIPE breakfast,

where students are recognized and celebrated for their efforts to make positive change.

ENGLISH AS A SECoND LANGUAGEThe English as a Second Language program at Bishop Allen Academy is designed to

support the diverse needs of English language learners. Those students who require

intensive language support take ESL classes throughout the school year. Their overall

academic progress is monitored by the ESl instructors in partnership with Student

Services and Educational Services.

research indicates that academic language acquisition typically requires five to seven

years therefore, students who have completed their ESl courses may continue to receive

support in the form of optional time accommodations.

For students who are considered Ell (English language learners), participation in the

ESl program is an appropriate and beneficial decision and should be encouraged. It in

no way adversely affects students’ chances to proceed to post-secondary education. In

fact it may contribute positively to their academic success as it affords them the time,

the flexibility and the support they may need during the time of transition.

BUSINESS DEPARTMENTThe Bishop Allen Business Department offers a wide range of both business and

computer courses. Students are exposed to the ‘real business world’ through classroom

visits from Chartered Accountants, managers, and CEos of various corporations.

In some of our courses, students are involved in creating and operating fictitious

businesses. A significant percentage of our graduating students pursue business

studies at the post-secondary level. Past graduates have been accepted to the Schulich

School of Business at york University, rotman Commerce at the University of Toronto,

the Rogers School of Management Program at Ryerson and the Commerce Program at

Queen’s University.

CooPERATIVE EDUCATIoNCooperative Education at Bishop Allen serves many purposes. Whether a student’s

interest is in the sciences, the arts, the humanities or in a hands-on profession,

cooperative education is a way for students to enlighten themselves about a field they

find interesting. Students who are almost certain of the path they would like to follow

will find that spending three or four hours a day at a placement will help to clarify their

decision making when the time comes to select programs for their post-secondary

education. Students who need to spend time gaining some real life experience will

realize the routine of the working world. Students interested in a trade or another

apprenticeship field will be able to begin their training while still in high school through

the ontario youth Apprenticeship Program.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENTBishop Allen’s English Department offers students an enriching program with

opportunities and activities that help bring the texts being studied in the classroom to life

and that help students develop their literacy skills.

Each course includes fiction and non-fiction material which is presented using a variety

of media. Besides attending local theatre productions of works studied in their courses,

English students also have the chance to meet professionals from the worlds of media

9TCDSB REGIONAL CENTRE FOR THE CONGREGATED ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM

and literature. Senior English classes have hosted writers who share their experiences

in the publishing industry through the Students Writers and Teachers Program. In the

Writer’s Craft course, guest speakers have included journalists, screenwriters, and

novelists. media classes have also welcomed speakers from the advertising, film and

television industries. literacy preparation encompasses all subject areas. In order to help

grade 10 students prepare for the literacy test, we provide them with an intensive study

of all areas of reading and writing. This analysis and practice begins in grade 9 and

continues with an intensive preparation in grade 10.

MATH DEPARTMENT“Not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted

counts!” A. Einstein

The math program at Bishop Allen is quite extensive and uses a variety of technology,

from graphing calculators to Smartboards. Every year the Advanced Placement and

Academic students from grades nine to grade 12 are encouraged to write the Waterloo

math contests. The participation in these events is tremendous and the results are

always stellar. Students who continue to pursue math beyond grade 11 are consistently

challenged and well-prepared for what lies ahead in university. All you need to

remember is that the math department is the department that CoUnTS!

RELIGIoN AND PHILoSoPHy DEPARTMENT The Religion and Philosophy Department continues to utilize differentiated instruction

in order to enhance student learning and engagement. The grade nine final culminating

activity involves creating a game for Children’s liturgy so that a faith concept or scripture

passage can be reinforced through interaction. These games have been donated to St.

Joan of Arc Church and grade nine religion students have assisted on Sundays as an

outreach component of our program. our new initiative for next year will focus on the

implementation of the program “one life…many Gifts” where classes will discuss the

importance of organ donation as life-giving and part of our responsibility as people of

faith, hope and charity.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENTThe philosophy of teaching science at Bishop Allen can best be described by Einstein:

“Imagination is more important than knowledge! knowledge is limited. Imagination

encircles the world.”

right from the beginning, grade 9 students are taught to think critically and are

encouraged to develop their passion for scientific inquiry. Each semester, the grade 10

classes venture to Algonquin Park to study the wolves. Grade 10 Bishop Allen students

also represent and win medals at the Toronto Sci-tech Fair. This year one team earned

a place at the Canada-wide Science Fair. Senior physics students have participated

and won awards at the Wondercoaster Competition at Canada’s Wonderland. Subjects

are taught by talented, award-winning teachers who engage their students with their

dynamic teaching styles. This often involves exciting science demonstrations, creative

culminating projects like building robots (sumobots) or developing a C.S.I episode in

grade 11 Chemistry. The Science Department also integrates new technologies into

its programs. There are four classrooms equipped with a Smart Interactive Board and

two classrooms have wireless internet access. laptops and Vernier Probe Ware allow

students to experiment at the higher levels required for Advanced Placement.

SoCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENTThe social sciences program at Bishop Allen begins with the grade 9 geography course.

Geography is a subject which successfully integrates concepts and themes from many

disciplines into a special way of looking at the world. This interdisciplinary approach is

the strength of geography. Geographers are able to stand back and analyze and interpret

the spatial arrangements of human and physical activity in a unique way.

The social sciences department stresses academic rigour while incorporating field trips,

simulations, problem solving, mock trials and cabinets and report/research paper writing

in its “toolkit” of methods and we are pleased with the quality of work produced by

many of our students. The Social Sciences department continues in its attempts to make

its various disciplines a real and practical introduction to the world. It is a firm conviction

of the teaching staff of the Social Science department that practical experiences and

fieldwork are integral parts of effective, relevant education.

TECHNoLoGICAL STUDIESTwo technological studies course are offered in grade 10 to 12, Technological Design

and manufacturing Technology. The goal of these courses is to support high-quality

learning while giving students the opportunity to choose technological studies courses

that suit their skills and interests. For example, in grade 10 and 11 students may

consider building a footstool or even a muskoka chair. These courses provide students

with opportunities to develop an awareness of secondary and postsecondary pathways

leading to careers in the industry.

11TCDSB REGIONAL CENTRE FOR THE CONGREGATED ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM

VISUAL ARTSThe Art Department at Bishop Allen does a marvelous job of exposing students in all

grades to the artistic disciplines of painting, drawing, printmaking and design. Each

grade uses a different medium so that when a student takes the full four years of art,

they have a wide breadth of experience at the end. In their final year students who

intend to pursue a career or further studies in visual arts, are supported as they prepare

for their portfolio interviews. over the course of four years, students are also introduced

to the full range of art history: grade 9’s cover Prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek and roman;

Grade 10’s cover Gothic, renaissance, mannerists and Baroque; Grade 11’s cover

neoclassic, romantic, realism, Impressionism, Post Impressionism and Cubism; Grade

12’s cover from Cubism to modern day.

Bishop Allen also offers an Art Club which this year is creating a cafeteria mural. one

very special artistic connection that has been made is with the mimico BIA and the

Bishop Allen art students participate in its Lakeshore Tulip Festival. They complete a

nine panel mural as well as painting large four foot tulips.

The Arts

MUSICBishop Allen Academy offers an exceptionally rich and varied music curriculum: Band,

Strings and Vocal. The music is literally, and figuratively, “humming” all hours of the

day. our music students perform regularly in concerts and festivals throughout the city

and in the past have traveled throughout North America. Students have the opportunity

to develop their skills within the classroom and also through a variety of co-curricular

activities. our music students contribute to the life of the school through performance at

assemblies, and by hosting special events such as the Christmas and Spring Concerts

which are always well-attended. While enriching their own lives and preparing for their

futures, these students also bring enjoyment to the staff, parents and students within

our community

DRAMAThe drama department offers a variety of activities to compliment the four year drama

curriculum. As well as an annual school play, students have the opportunity to express

their creativity using film at the annual Bishop Allen Film Festival. As well, there is the

The Juline Playwright Festival in which students can write, direct, produce and act in

student original plays. The Bishop Allen Improvisational Team enjoys much success

especially at the annual Destination Imagination competitions.

The department is quite proud of the many Bishop Allen drama students who move

on to various programs such as film directing, acting, musical theatre and radio

and television.

“I received a full scholarship to Dalhousie and was able to maintain a competitive GPA throughout my four years. There's no doubt that it is in part because of the extra knowledge and work ethic that I learned from being in AP courses. As well, I didn't feel intimidated going into my first set of university exams because I had practice with taking AP exams. I am still benefiting from having received the standing of AP Scholar with Distinction by being able to include it in my autobiographical sketch of my medical school application.”

“I loved being a part of AP classes. you are surrounded by like-minded and goal oriented peers. you form study groups with students who are just as eager to learn as you are. Also, the AP Program helped me to learn to balance my time between academics and extra-curriculars. I chose to use my Biology, Art history and World history exams and accept the maximum three credits at University of Toronto in order to fulfill the distribution requirement at the Faculty of Arts and Science. By doing so, I do not need to worry about taking a course just for the sake of fulfilling a requirement and can focus on my personal and specific areas of interest.

The AP Program has given me the confidence to know that I can be successful in all my endeavours, the peace of mind to know that I am capable of competing with the best of the best, and the tools to balance all aspects of my life.”

chAndulA’s testimoniAl: I would like to thank you for letting me know about Shad Valley. Thanks to you, I was able to experience one of the most productive months of my life.…..my group invented a product called Allertech which uses nanotechnology to detect oncoming allergic reactions before any symptoms appear, therefore giving the user enough time to acquire adequate medical attention and care before the situation gets serious. We presented our product to a panel of judges made up of an investor, an engineer, a banker and a businessman. Allertech won best application of scientific principles and best overall product. This meant that our team was chosen to move on to the nation-wide finals …When I compare all of this to what I would have done this summer, had I not applied to Shad Valley last December, I can truly say that that application changed my life. I know that I would have never applied had I not heard it from you.
