Dear Pilgrim,

“With great excitement we invite you to join many Opus Dei families for a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Spain for the Beatification of Vener-able Bishop Alvaro del Portillo. Along the way, we will visit Marian shrines throughout Spain and in France, sa-voring rich devotional traditions, and also we will be able to visit sites of historical significance in the history of Opus Dei and in the lives of St. Jose-maria and Don Alvaro. All will cul-minate in the Beatification ceremony on Saturday, September 27, and a public Mass of Thanksgiving on Sun-day, September 28, with our Prelate, Bishop Javier Echevarria. This will be a glorious spiritual feast -- do join us!”

BEATIFICATION PILGRIMAGEDaily Mass will be offered along the pilgrimage route...

Sunday, September 21, 2014: Our pilgrimage-tour begins as we depart from Washington, D.C. Reagan National Airport for our flight to Barcelon, Spain.

Monday, Sept. 22: Upon arrival in Barcelona we will be greeted by our local Canterbury Tour Escort who will accompany us throughout Spain to ensure a wonderful experience for all. Following hotel check in we will take an orientation tour of Barcelona finishing up with a Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy where St. Josemaria spent time in prayer. St. Josemaria Escriva returned to Barcelona in the last days of December 1939 with Alvaro del Portillo, in order to help start up the Opus Dei apostolate in Barcelona. In 1940 he travelled to Barcelona on three occasions, visiting the basilica of Our Lady of Mercy at least once, on April 2. Overnight Barcelona.

Tuesday, Sept. 23: Today we’ll visit the Monastery of Montserrat. St Josemaria made this pilgrimage by foot in 1945, after reserving the Blessed Sacrament in one of the first Opus Dei centers in Barcelona. While in Montserrat we will participate in Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, patron of Catalonia. Back to Barcelona for an afternoon of guided sight seeing including Antoni Gaudi’s breathtaking Sagrada Familia. Overnight Barcelona.

Wednesday, Sept. 24: Early departure for Barbastro where will visit the Birthplace of St. Josemaria Escriva and participate in Mass at the Sanctuario de Torreciudad which was built by St. Josemaria and consecrated on July 7, 1975. Following our visit to Barbastro we set off northward to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. We will arrive there in time for the Rosary and Candlelight Procession which is incredibly moving. Overnight Lourdes.

Thursday, Sept. 25: Morning Mass at the Grotto of the Apparition followed by a guided tour of St. Bernadette’s home, the basilica, and their environs which will give us a deeper understanding of St. Bernadette’s life and of her relationship with Mary, the Immaculate. Next, we set off for Zaragoza, Spain, the city where St. Josemaria was ordained to the priesthood, to see the Pillar Basilica and Our Lady of the Pillar. Overnight Zaragoza.

Friday, Sept. 26: Morning departure for Madrid where we will visit many places connected with the life of Bishop Alvaro del Portillo. Mass at Cathedral de la Almudena followed by visit to the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor. Overnight Madrid.

Saturday, Sept. 27: Today we will participate in the Beatification Ceremony for Venerable Alvaro del Portillo in Madrid which will be presided over by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato. Overnight Madrid.

Sunday, Sept. 28: This morning we will attend the public Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated by the Prelate of Opus Dei, Bishop Javier Echevarria. In the afternoon we will make an excursion to visit Toledo known as the City of the Three Religions or Cultures because for many centuries the Christians, the Moors, and the Jews lived together in relative equality and peace. Back to Madrid for dinner. Overnight Madrid.

Monday, Sept. 29: Today we’ll visit the Monastery of El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen. Next, we make our way to Avila, the town associated with St. Teresa. In Avila we’ll visit the Convent of St. Teresa (site of her birthplace). Our Chaplain will celebrate Mass for us at the shrine of Sonsoles where St. Josemaria visited and began the tradition of the May Pilgrimage. Farewell dinner. Overnight Madrid.

Tuesday, Sept. 30: Enroute to the airport we will participate in Mass. With a deeper love for Mary, gratitude to God and wonderful memories of our pilgrimage to participate in the Beatification ceremonies, we’ll board our plane for our flight home.

OPTIONAL PRE-PILGRIMAGE EXTENSION: FATIMA, PORTUGAL

Sept. 18, 2014: Our Pilgrimage begins as we depart from the USA on our overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal.

Sept. 19: Upon arrival into Lisbon we’ll be met by our Tour Escort. While in Lisbon, we will visit the birthplace of St. Anthony where our Chaplain will lead us in prayer. Next, we’ll take a guided tour of this beautiful port city followed by our transfer to Fa-tima. Before arriving in Fatima we’ll visit Santarem, one of the oldest cities in the world, to visit the Church of St. Stephen and its Eucharistic miracle. Overnight Fatima.

Sept. 20: Today we’ll visit the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima and the Capelinha where our Blessed Mother appeared to the three seers. We’ll walk together the Way of the Cross which takes us through Aljustrel, Valinhos, and the Loca Do Cabeco. Tonight we’ll head to the shrine for the candlelight Rosary Procession. Overnight Fatima.

Sept. 21: Today we’ll visit Coimbra and the Carmelite convent where Sr. Lucia lived for most of her adult life. While in Coimbra we will also venerate the relics of Queen St. Elizabeth. Candlelight Rosary Procession. Overnight Fatima.

Sept. 22: Today we say farewell to Our Lady of Fatima and make our way to Lisbon and our short flight to Barcelona to meet up with the group arriving from the USA. Following our arrival into Barcelona Airport we will take an orientation tour of Barcelona finishing up with a Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy where St. Josemaria spent time in prayer. Overnight Barcelona.

OPTIONAL POST-PILGRIMAGE EXTENSION: ROME, ITALY

Sept. 30, 2014: Flight to Rome. On arrival we will visit the church of Our Lady of Peace, Prelatic Church of Opus Dei and barial place of St. Josemaría Escrivá. Over-night Rome.

Oct. 1: Following breakfast, we depart early for St. Peter’s Square to participate in the Papal Audience (subject to the Pope’s schedule). After lunch we will depart for a tour of the Catacombs of San Callisto (where hundreds of early Christians were buried) followed by Mass. Overnight Rome.

Oct. 2: Today we visit the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (the burial place of St. Paul, one of the five patriarchal Basilicas and the second largest church in Rome). In the afternoon we will visit the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Mary Major (which was built after a miraculous event and embellished to celebrate the ecumenical council of Ephesus). We also visit Santa Pudenziana, one of the oldest churches in Rome, where St. Peter and St. Paul resided for a time. Finally, we visit Santa Prassede a 9th-century basilica with glorious Byzantine mosaics celebrating images from the book of Revelation. Overnight Rome.

Oct. 3: Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica (the magnificent Church marking the tomb of the Fisherman) followed by a tour of the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel. Afternoon at leisure to roam Rome on your own. Overnight Rome.

Oct. 4: With a renewed sense of pilgrimage, we board our plane for our flight home.

Why Canterbury Tours Takes Its Name From History’s Most Famous Pilgrimage

In The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer describes a merry lot of men and women in the fourteenth century who found themselves thrown together on a Pilgrimage from London to the Cathedral at Canterbury (which was Catholic then).

The Canterbury Tales are an impressive testimonial to the joys of pilgrimage! Canterbury Tours strives to create the enthusiasm and joy of travel of Chaucer’s Pilgrims in the good people who go on pilgrimage with us. We orchestrate and host our tours as if we were hosting our own family cel-ebration. We know that our tours are a special experience for our guests and we remember that in everything we do.
