Two creamware shards:
bisque and glazed: both

looks like large bowls.
They are both decorated

single band of large oval

Similarly decorated shards
were excavated at the
William Greabach site at
Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent

Forty nine bisque

conjoin from a large
number of mugs in
different sizes,
which as best as can

decorated with fine
lathe cut bands both
raised and incised.
Between these bands
are two roughened
areas the broader
one c. 24mm above
the base and the top
one c. 21mm below
the rim. These bands
vary in thickness
and we are not sure
how this effect was achieved. The mugs vary in diameter from between 80 to 100mm, but
in no case de we have a full profile and we are not sure how straight the mugs were. The
surviving handle shards attached to the bodies are ribbed, have breadths of 18 mm and
has been squeezed at their terminals.

Twenty nine bisque
creamware shards
from a number of
mugs in different
sizes, which as best
as can establish are
decorated with a
band of simple

their bases and
below their rims.
The body shards
also have both
raised and incised
bands from turning,
and a few have roughened areas as illustrated above (illus 283), but most of these bands
are smooth. The Bands of rouletting are between 6 and 9mm above the base and just
below the rims. All bases are recessed and we are not sure how straight these mugs were.
Shards with similar decorated rouletting were excavated at the William Greabach site at
Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent (Barker, 1991, 177), Also see (Adeney 2008, 107).

All have been

below their rims

strainer holes on
plain spouts have
been punched randomly with a single punch, using two different sizes on the two
recovered examples 3 & 4mm (illus 282 c). Shards were recovered from three covers,
in different sizes, all decorated with a band of simple rouletting and two have different
knops, one fairly plane with a concave top (dia13mm) and the other looks like a six
petalled flower (dia 20mm), (illus 282 d & e). The rims which vary in diameter from
(75 to 120mm) have a narrow internal lid seating (illus 282b), while the bases, all
except one (85mm), have a diameter of (90mm). Most of what we think could be
teapot handle have been extruded, have ribbed decoration and in the main have a
breadth of between (9 and 12mm), although it is impossible to be sure what were used
for teapots and for jugs etc. The extruded handle (illus 282f), of which there is some
evidence for crossing also had terminals in the form of flowers and foliage (illus 282

Shards of bisque creamware were recovered from different features during the
excavation at the site of the Delftfield pottery including an interesting group of plate
shards from 1000, but the majority by far was recovered from pit 4005/1 which might

A large number of the bisque creamware shards in the Delftfield assemblage come
from feather edged moulded plates with wavy rims. We have sized them by
measuring the breadth of the rim at its widest point along with their Diameters.
