Black Belt Prep Key Points - Fall 2021

*TENTATIVE - Subject to change! Effective 09/03/21

Our goal is to successfully prepare as many of our Brown, Advanced Brown and Flipped Brown Belts as possible to successfully pass their Tip Tests, Pre-Tests, and ultimately their Black Belt & Degree Exams.

Covid-19 Black Belt & Degree Testing:

We are currently offering small group Pre-Tests, Black Belt and Degree Exams onsite at AMA on the Friday of testing week. In addition to knowledge of curriculum, Black Belt & Degree Candidates must:

1) Be comfortable participating in an onsite pre-test and exam while wearing a cloth mask (if required by WA State mandate).

2) Students will be partnering with their classmates/fellow candidates, an AMA Black Belt or AMA Instructor to demonstrate self-defense techniques and sparring/grappling curriculum. We are no longer requiring a quarantine safe “uke”. Uke translates as “receiver of technique” and does require physical contact.

3) Immediate family members (same household) may attend as spectators.

Testing procedures will be modified as necessary to accommodate state and local requirements and, most importantly, to keep our students, their families and staff safe.

There is no rush to test! If you are not comfortable testing onsite, or are unable to test onsite, it is 100% okay to wait to test.

Covid-19 Run & Conditioning:

• Black Belt Candidates will complete their Black Belt Run & Conditioning requirements OFFSITE the day before their onsite exam and upload their times and support media using the DropBox file request link for their dojo by 9pm the same day.

• Please review the specific format and requirements in advance on the BBprep.com site and contact your head instructor at least 1-week in advance with any questions.

Monthly Tip Testing:

• There will be no classes the Friday of Testing Week! We will be conducting onsite Pre-Tests, Black Belt Exams and Degree Exams. Please email me in advance if you would like to sign up for a Fall Pre-Test. Students who pass their Pre-Test will be eligible for the next Black Belt or Degree Exam.

• Onsite Brown, Advanced Brown and Flipped Brown Belts will test in their regular class on Wednesday or Thursday of testing week. Online Brown, Advanced Brown and Flipped Brown Belts will test in a Zoom private lesson any day during testing week.

• *Students who are out of town or do not pass during testing week should schedule and complete a make-up test within 1 week. If not, they should skip that tip and focus on earning their next tip.

Black Belt Prep Cycle Overview

Becoming a black belt is not a one-time event in your life. You evolve into a black belt over a period of time and remain a black belt forever. You have probably all heard the expression, “You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.” Mr. Parker, the founder of American Kenpo, said, “A master can’t make you good, he can only point you in the right direction. It is up to you to provide the dedication and sweat.” I include this quote here because, to me, it sums up the process of becoming a Black Belt. Instructors can help you. Parents and spouses can help you. Friends and siblings can help you, but they cannot earn your Black Belt for you. You have to do the work:

§ You have to do the Conditioning. § You have to do the Basics § You have to do the Forms & Sets § You have to do the Self Defense Techniques § You have to do the Reading & Writing § You have to do… EVERYTHING!

Is it easy? NO. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY!!!

PRIMARY PHYSICAL COMPONENTS OF TEST

1. 3 Mile Run 2. Conditioning 3. Basics 4. Forms & Sets 5. Self Defense Techniques 6. Sparring & Grappling 7. Board Breaking

PRIMARY MENTAL COMPONENTS OF TEST 1. Perseverance 2. Positive Attitude 3. Thesis (Adults) Thank You Letters (Juniors)

PRIMARY SPIRITUAL COMPONENTS OF TEST 1. Black Belt Character (Powerful Words) 2. Read “Zen in the Martial Arts” (Required) 3. Community Service Project

WRITTEN CURRICULUM 1. Weekly Home Practice 2. Book Report 3. Community Service Reports

VERBAL CURRICULUM 1. Student Creed 2. Technique Questions 3. BB Questions

Page 7: Black Belt Prep Key Points - Fall 2021

BB Prep @ Home Practice

Where can we find curriculum review videos?

1. Go to the Black Belt Prep Website! (http://www.bbprep.com) a. All students in BB Prep or Degree Prep should use the PREP LOGIN. The USER

NAME = EdParker (case sensitive). The PASSWORD = KenpoKarate!2021 (case sensitive).

b. For each month of the BB Prep Cycle you will find individual posts for all required curriculum, including step-by-step notes and video of your required forms and techniques.

c. This is an extremely valuable resource – use it!

How should students use the home practice sheets? 1. The purpose of the home practice sheets is to structure student’s practice outside of

class. We know that attending class 2-3x/week is not enough to become a Black Belt at Alpha Martial Arts. It takes work (or practice) outside of class to succeed.

o BB Prep Home Practice Is Required. Students NEED be practicing at home to be successful on their monthly Tip/Belt Testing. There is a cause and effect to practicing at home consistently. Students who are engaged and completing mindful repetitions during their practice time are more confident and execute their curriculum better on their tests.

2. The practice time requirement designed to give each student clear goals for how much work/practice is required. Studies have shown that it takes 10,000 reps to achieve mastery (see Outliers, by Malcom Gladwell). Our recommendations are:

o Brown Belts complete a minimum of 15 minutes of at home practice 3x/week to be eligible for Advanced Brown Belt testing.

o Advanced Brown Belts complete a minimum of 30 minutes of at home practice 3x/week to be eligible for Advanced Brown Belt testing.

o Flipped Brown Belts complete a minimum of 45 minutes of at home practice 3x/week to be eligible for Advanced Brown Belt testing.

a. For Black Belt we do not expect mastery of everything. We expect mastery of your basics and a high level of performance of everything else (Memorization + Execution + Intensity). For example, students will have performed 10,000 straight punches from white belt to black belt, but perhaps only hundreds of reps of a self defense technique.

b. Ideally, students will complete their at home practice on days they are not participating in group classes. Doubling up on a day you attend class or waiting until the last day is better than not practicing at all, but is not ideal for retaining/perfecting the curriculum.

Page 8: Black Belt Prep Key Points - Fall 2021

Training Checklist Brown Belts & Up Training Checklist:

§ Attend Brown / Black Belt Class consistently § Do your best on everything (from the moment you bow into class until the

moment you bow out) -- 100% effort and execution § Make your basics perfect (stances, chambers, foot/hand positions, etc.) § Improve your power, speed & accuracy § Black Belt Conditioning: Don’t cheat! Make sure your form is correct! § Reviewing curriculum on your own on days you are not participating in group

classes using the BB Prep Home Practice Sheets / BB Prep Website as a guide. § Black Belt Conditioning: 20 reps of each exercise at home 3x/week § Ask a family member to be your uke so you can practice your self-defense on a

body (Be Nice!) Flipped Brown Belts / Adult Black Belt Candidates Also Need To Complete:

§ 3 months before BB Exam: o 1 mile run (1x/week) – Goal is 15 min/mile or less o 35 reps of BB Conditioning at home (3x/week)

§ Keep Running/Conditioning Log § 2 Months before BB Exam:

o 2 mile run (1x/week) – Goal is 13 min/mile or less o 50 reps of BB Conditioning at home (3x/week)

§ 1 Month before BB Exam (Pre-Test): o Complete a 3 mile run – Goal is 11 min/mile or less o Complete BB Conditioning Ladder 10 à 1 reps at home (1x/week)
