Interesting Statistics

• Facebook is the leading source of referred social media traffic to websites at 26%. Twitter is second at 3.6%.

• There are approximately 100 million active Twitter users (those who log on at least once a day).

• Pinterest has grown over 4000% in the past six months. It is tied with Twitter in terms of referred social media traffic at 3.6%.

• There are 120 million regular users of Tumblr. The average user spends approximately two hours PER DAY on the site (second to Facebook).

• 4.8 Billion people now own mobile phones. Only 4.2 Billion people own toothbrushes.

Platform #1: Google ReaderGoogle Reader - Google Reader is a Web-based aggregator, capable of reading Atom and RSS feeds online or offline. It was released by Google on October 7, 2005 through Google Labs. The most popular RSS reader around the Internet. It is a web-based application that allows the user to subscribe to and manage RSS feeds. Given its popularity many websites use special badges to let the user subscribe to Google Reader directly.

• Google Reader brings content that you consume on the internet on a daily basis to you.

• We equate it to a "Central Command Center" for your content. • Allows you to distribute content out to Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc. Very

simple. • Updates in real time• Helps you discover new news sources.

Platform #2: IFTTTIFTTT - "If Then Then This " ifttt allows you to create tasks that fit this simple structure: if this then that. Think of all the things you could do if you were able to define any task as: when something happens (this) then do something else (that). This platform allows you to automate your internet life.

• This service allows you to create different "recipes" that connect different channels.

• There are currently over 50 channels you can connect• Quick demo. • Popular recipes include:

• Text the Weather in the AM• When you change your facebook profile picture, it automatically changes your

Twitter profile• Every time you are tagged in a Facebook picture, it saves that picture to your

Dropbox• Every time you star an article in Google Reader, it saves a copy of that article in

your Evernote, Instapaper, etc. • Saves a photo from Instagram into your Dropbox

Platform #3: QuoraQuora - Quora is a website, founded in June 2009, launched in private beta in December 2009, and made available to the public on June 21, 2010, that aggregates questions and answers to many topics and allows users to collaborate on them. (just launched an offical Android app today!)

• Quora tilts towards techies and many CEO of companies are active. Mark Cuban (who answered a question today), Kevin Systrom (CEO of Instagram), Phil Libi (CEO of Evernote) and others are on the site and answer different questions.

• The site allows you to share your answers via Facebook and Twitter. • Notable Questions:

Platform #4: Youtube

Youtube - YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos. Three former PayPal employees created YouTube in February 2005. The name and logo of the company are an allusion to the cathode ray tube, a display device used since the early days of electronic television.

• Youtube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world. • Youtube is rumored to originally be started to be a dating site. • The ‘how to’ video category is the fastest growing vertical on YouTube• Over 70% of Youtube's traffic comes from outside the United States.

• According to Youtube trends manager Kevin Allocca, the three things needed to create a viral video - tastemakers, participation and unexpectedness. • A tastemaker is an influential person (celebrity, popular blogger, TV host) who references

the video and causes it to begin its viral ascent. • Participation is when people create parodies of videos and other memes based on the

original video. (Biggest Example. Rebecca Black & “Friday”)• Unexpectedness is simply a video gaining popularity at the most random of times. Most

videos that go viral have a dormant beginning stage on Youtube before they take a massive growth spurt.

Platform #5: Aggregators

Aggregators - Aggregators curate your online content which will allow you to reference you online footprint and/or use this aggregator as a home web page.

• Friendfeed (which was purchased by Facebook in August of 2009), is still considering one of the best aggregators in existence. Many of Facebook's current technology (Likes, Share button, thumbnail images) were "borrowed" from Friendfeed.

• Rebelmouse is a current favorite for aggregators. It is highly customizable and pulls in all the major social media platforms.

• Others include Glos.si, and Overblog.

Platform #6: Paper.li

Paper.li is a content curation service. It enables people to publish newspapers based on topics they like and treat their readers to fresh news, daily.

• Allows you to create a twice daily, daily or weekly newspaper that is created online and based on sources you select. You can select specific twitter accounts, Facebook pages and RSS feeds.

• Paper can be embedded on your website and is highly customizeable. • 500K topic based newspapers. • 15 Million articles featured daily

Platform #7: EvernoteEvernote is a suite of software and services designed for notetaking and archiving. Evernote makes iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad into an extension of your brain and lets you keep notes, ideas, snapshots and recordings. Instantly synchronizes from your iPhone to your Mac or Windows desktop.

Evernote allows you to take a note through the following methods:• Typing, Handwriting, Spoken word, Snap a picture, Drawings, Clip a portion of a

web page, Clip an entire web page• Evernote allows for project collaboration through the shared notebook features. • The search function allows you to search all text including text written and on a

PDF. • There are currently over 111 mobile apps and 81 desktop apps that sync and use

Evernote in some fashion.• Clearly, Hellofax, IFTTT, Voice2Note, Penultimate are some favorites.

Platforms to Watch:

App.net - Ad free alternative to Twitter. Paying for access is required. Allows 256 characters per message, compared to 140 characters of Twitter. Raised over $800K through a crowdfunding campaign on their own crownfunding platform.Pinterest - Creating vision boards through images found all over the web or your hard drive. Tumblr - Known as a blogging platform that fits between Twitter and traditional Wordpress Asana - Project collaboration tool. Currently it is free. The Launch Ticker – sign up for it for strictly breaking tech news when it happens and not when an embargo occurs.

Mobile Apps:

Zite - mobile app that brings your stories about a range of topics. As you like specific articles, it will learn what articles you like and find similar articles in the future. SocialCam/Viddy - Moblie film recording and sharing on a platform. SocialCam was already purchased for $60M in July. Viddy will be featured and used in the MTV VMA's on Thursday. Flipboard - Check in on the news from the day. Dropbox - A virtual hard drive in the cloud. CamScanner - turns your mobile device into a scanner.
