The couple, of Baslow Crescent, Dodworth, cele- brated their golden wed- ding anniversary last week. They met in Hemsworth one snowy night and were married months later at St Helen’s Church. Brian, 72, worked for the West Riding and West Yorkshire police followed by South Yorkshire when he moved to Barnsley in 1965. Rita, 70, was an office clerk at Lowfield storage and distribution which used to be in Dodworth. They have a daughter, Elizabeth, son, Richard and two granddaughters. COUPLE CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF BLISS Happy pair: Brian and Rita Henstock, of Baslow Crescent, Dodworth, who celebrated their golden wed- ding last week. Picture: Scott Bairstow ABOUT 67,000 people in Barnsley are to be offered physical activities to stop them becoming ‘obese’. The council approved a £1.3m scheme last week paid for by NHS Barnsley to offer a programme focused on the 34 per cent of Barnsley’s population who are classed as over- weight in order to stop them becoming fatter. Help for the overweight AS the summer season draws to a close and the nights close in, a trip to the seaside may be the last place you think of to visit. But from next month Blackpool will be one of the brightest holiday resorts around when its world-famous Illuminati- ons are switched on. Since 1879 the Illumin- ations, then described as ‘artificial sunshine’, have been a major part of Blackpool’s attractions and have been a guiding light for visitors to the resort ever since. Today millions of visitors flock to Blackpool each autumn to witness the dazzling display, which now stretches almost six miles along the resort’s promenade, using over one million bulbs and earning it the title of ‘the greatest free light show on earth’. Blackpool is currently counting down to this year’s Illuminations, wh- ich are set to be the most electrifying yet with the first ever ‘Big Switch-On Weekend’. Visit Blackpool and BBC Radio 2 will be hosting the amazing, star-studded celebrity weekend that will take place on September 4 and 5 to unveil the Illuminations, which will shine until November 8. The Big Switch-On Weekend will see BBC Radio 2 broadcast a series of live shows introduced by some of the station’s best-loved presenters including one-time Blackpool resident, come- dian Alan Carr. He will be flicking the famous switch on Sept- ember 4 from the special- ly-built Switch-On arena. For the remaining nigh- ts of the season, Black- pool’s Illuminations will bring the resort to life in light and colour. The Illuminations offer visitors a host of different experiences and ways to view the glittering specta- cle. Whilst most visitors drive through the lights either by car, coach or bus, there are some more exciting ways of viewing the dazzling displays. Hopping aboard an open-top tram is best for the clearest view, while riding in a horse-drawn carriage could be a rom- antic treat, or you can simply walk through the Illuminations, wrapped in a warm coat and eating a bag of chips. In addition to the Illuminations there are many more things to see and do when staying in Blackpool, which help to make it one of Britain’s most popular resorts. The iconic Blackpool Tower, is home to the Tower Circus and provides five floors of family fun within its 518-foot structure and the Pleasure Beach offers thrills and spills from 125 rides and attractions, including white-knuckle rollercoaster the Pepsi Max Big One. Other attractions offering hours of family fun include Blackpool Zoo, Louis Tus- saud’s Waxworks, the Sea Life Centre and Sandcastle – the UK’s largest indoor water park. It’s illumination time again, see them in style Beautiful: Blackpool is one of Britain’s most popular resorts. (S) blackpool illuminations advertisingfeature
