Eisteddfod News from the Band

On Monday 11 August the Blaxland East Concert Band travelled to Windsor to participate in the Hawkesbury Eisteddfod. We were competitor 1 in the ‘B grade Band section’ and against 4 other bands from around the Hawkesbury and Hills area. We were placed 4th in our section. The Band played 2 pieces of contrasting feel – ‘March of the Hyperion Robots’ and ‘Rum-bah’. The adjudicator noted the following in his adjudication. ‘March of the Hyperion Robots

Excellent rhythmic opening ……

Good ensemble from b(bar) 25 ……

Well played b 49 – 74 You play very well together. Rum-Bah

Good rhythmic opening ……

Well done clarinets and sax b 5 ……

I would like more lower brass and woodwind to balance the ensemble.. Your style and articulations were very good throughout. You are very well directed.’

As you can see our adjudication contained both positive feedback and advice for the future. We are looking forward to more members joining the band for 2015 – as you can see from the adjudication, we particularly need the lower brass players ie tuba, trombone, euphonium. We look forward to contesting the Penrith Eisteddfod next Thursday 21 August, 2014 then entertaining the Seniors group at the Blaxland Uniting Church (across the road from the school) on Friday 22 August. I would personally like to thank Mr Chris Anderson and Mr Smith for their assistance in the movement and supervision of the band on Monday. A big thank you to the parents and family members that travelled to Windsor to support your family member. Thank you also to the parents and families that continue to support our school band. We ask that our band members keep up the practise at home and attendance at school rehearsals so we can perform to our very best. Great work everyone, Mrs R Wallis Band coordinator

Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians – Student Results

‘A teacher has several identical tables each in the shape of an isosceles trapezium….. Each table has places for 5 chairs: two on the long side and one on each of the other sides…..The teacher can join two tables in other ways. Draw four of these other ways which are different from one another.’ These and other conundrums were set to be pondered. During May and June this year a group of enthusiastic mathematicians from years 5 and 6 participated in the Upper Primary division of the Mathematics Challenge. These 22 students were among 3300 students Australia wide who completed a set of 4 problems that required group and problem solving skills. These problems fell into the categories of Manipulating Trapeziums, Money Matters, Five-by-Five Square and Maths Society. Many hours were spent contemplating, discussing, solving, checking, arguing and agreeing with the solutions to these problems. Awards were granted across 4 categories: Distinction, Credit, Proficiency and Participation. The following students achieved: Distinction Elena Goudis, Paris Hooley, Kala Puri, Caspar Zauner, Georgia Biaggini, Emma Bonwick, Emma Cole, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Rohan Telleman, Simon Dowd, Deklan McKerrell, Holly Nelson, Hannah Saad. Credit Sarah Plumpton, Sasha Titovs, Jenna Hind, Shahar Buskilla, Aaron Hodges, Thomas Kwok, Geordan Nicholson, Lachlan Simpson, Luke Zoglmeyer. Congratulations on these wonderful results! Stage 2 Excursion

Greg Alexander Shield Finals Day – Tuesday 24 June, 2014

As previously mentioned, 9 boys from year 6 competed in and won the final to advance to The Legends Shield to be held at Macquarie University on 20th August. I forgot to make mention of the outstanding efforts of Benjamin Crilley who was awarded with Player of The Match in the Grand Final. This was a great feat, as this was the second time in as many years Benjamin had received this award. Well done Ben!

NSW Boys Touch Trials

The state championship for boys touch was contested recently on the South Coast at Milton over three competitive days of touch football. Five players from Blaxland East had been training since Sydney West trials were held early last term. Liam Robinson was selected by his team members as co-captain of the Sydney West team. He played strongly in all thirteen games including the semi and was unluckily not to be selected in the state squad. He was well supported by his fellow Blaxland East team mates, Zac Hunter, Ben Crilley, Caleb Jackson Brown and Jed Drew, finishing in third place. Congratulation boys and good luck in the future

Permission Notes As permission notes are legal documents, it would be appreciated if when returning signed permission notes to school that a separate note be completed for each child. Lost Property There is a mountain of lost property held behind the administration block. If your child/children are missing anything, please feel free to come and have a look. Dance Fees Due to concerns raised in regard to dance fees a note has been sent home to all dance group families outlining dance group expense guidelines. It should be noted that Natasha Shandler of Fanci Footworks has not increased her fees. Should anyone have any further questions please feel free to contact the school office.
