FROM OUR PASTOR, FR. MATTHEW ZUBERBUELER / DE NUESTRO PÁRROCO PADRE MATTHEW ZUBERBUELER

Dear Friends,

During my years as a priest, I have had the privilege of working with Knights of Columbus councils all over the Diocese. I can tell you that they have always been, and always are, very support-ive of priests. Perhaps this reality is related to the fact that their founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney, was an exemplary priest. Fr. McGivney lived to be only 38 years old. In his few years of ser-vice as a priest, he shepherded immigrant people in New Haven, Connecticut. I find his story inspiring because he found great success in bringing relief to the struggles he found among his people. In his day, it was difficult, even impossible, for some immigrants to have the benefit of insurance. Seeing this need, he established a fraternal organization, the Knights of Columbus, to develop and guarantee financial support for poor immigrant families. The Knights of Columbus also offered much needed formation and support for living out the Catholic Faith.

Our parish is very blessed to have the Knights of Columbus serv-ing among us. The Council here is called Our Lady of Gua-dalupe Council— I was very happy when I arrived to discover that name! Our Knights are always ready to lend a hand and to get involved in all manner of parish activities. I am grateful for their presence here and I invite you to get to know them and to consider joining them.

This Saturday, October 31, the Knights will rejoice in something very special: their Founder, Fr. McGivney, will be beatified in a ceremony in Connecticut. Blessed Mi-chael McGivney has a nice ring to it! It would be cool to travel in time to interview people who knew him personally, to ask them if they considered him to be exceptionally holy, a future Saint of the Church. I expect they would say yes.

We are blessed here in the United States to have among us a new Blessed! Let’s pray to him, specifically for our parish. May we be responsive and successful in the way we welcome and help our immigrant parishioners!

With my prayers,

Fr. Matthew ZuberbuelerPastor

Queridos amigos,

HONOR THE LORD’S DAY / HONRANDO EL DIA DEL SEÑOR

CONFESSIONS DURING COVID / CONFESIONES DURANTE COVID

COMMUNION SERVICE / SERVICIO DE COMUNIÓN

BAPTISMS / BAUTIZOS

During these days when Holy Communion isn’t possible please adopt the traditional and fruitful practice of praying a Spiritual Communion Prayer.

An ideal practice is to make this prayer when you are meditating on the readings from the Mass of the Day or watching it on TV or online. Mass readings can be found at www.usccb.org.

Confessions are being heard in the meeting rooms down the hall to the right of the main entrance to the church in Rooms 8, 9 and 10. We are using these rooms so that the prescribed social distancing rules can be observed for your protection and ours.

A brief Communion Service will be offered on the courtyard at 9:00 am Monday-Saturday and at 10:00 am on Sundays.

All baptisms and baptism classes are back on schedule. They will require the same guidelines and restrictions for social dis-tancing as attending Mass at St. Anthony. Call the parish office between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Baptism dates and registration forms are available on our parish website under the “Sacraments”

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe you are truly present inthe Blessed Sacrament.

I love you more than anything in the world, and I hunger to feed on your flesh. But since I cannot receive communion at this moment, feed my soul at least spiritually. I unite myself to you now as I do

when I actually receive you.Never let me drift away from you.

AMEN

Donating altar flowers is a simple way to honor a loved one, glorify God, and beautify the altar. You can choose any Sunday. Please consider a donation to the flower fund today. Stop by the Parish Office to pick up a form, check the Church back shelf or visit our website at www.stanthonyparish.org.

REMINDER that masks are required to attend Mass and are to be worn throughout the Mass. At Communion we strongly encourage receiving on the hand and removing mask temporarily to consume the Host. Some have stayed away from Mass because they fear these precautions are not being observed by others.

Remember that it is an act of kindness and charity to do what helps another.

BLESSED CHIARA LUCE BADANOOCT. 29

ANSWER: November 1st is All Saints Day when we celebrate the Church Triumphant, those souls in Heaven who intercede for us. November 2nd is All Souls Day when we remember the faithful departed and pray for the Church Suffer-ing (Penitent), the souls being purified in Purgatory. We are the Church Militant who are pilgrims on the journey to meet them both in Heaven. This is the Communion of Saints - the holy ones of God. (CCC #954)

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS DAYS?

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PREPARED AND PARTICIPATED IN THE PRAYER VIGIL FOR OUR NATION!

NEW PICNIC PAVILIONS!

You may have noticed some construction on our sports field. As part of the Solar Panel Project we are installing 3 structures which support additional solar panels. These will double as shades for use during future activities for the parish community. They are being built at no cost to us, but will contribute to our overall savings on energy costs.

The inspiration of Fr. McGivney lives on in our St. Anthony of Padua Council. The Nuesta Señora de Guadalupe Council has the unique distinction of being the first council founded in Virginia by Hispanic ministry. Although many of the members are bi-lingual, the monthly meetings are held in English (virtual at this time). Their Sunday barbecues are legendary and not to be missed. We look forward to their Keep Christ in Christmas card and wreath sales, too. But there are so many behind-the-scenes ways they serve our parish including: Coordinating the Spring Gala and St. Anthony Festivals, organize the St. Lucy Food Truck Drive, participate in the 40 Days for Life, and serve as catechists in our Religious Education program. The funds they raise have been used to support our diocesan seminarians, Christmas presents for our teachers, our new long-handled collection baskets and so much more!

STATEMENT ON THE BEATIFICATION OF VENERABLE FR. MICHAEL MCGIVNEY BY BISHOP BURBIDGE

"For more than 138 years, the Knights of Columbus has served families, the poor and the Church with profound dedication and compassion. Focused on the principles of charity, unity, frater-nity and patriotism, the immeasurable good work it has done started with the vision and courage of Father Michael J. Mc-Givney. He is said to have had an “iron will” in his work to improve the lives of the faithful, especially the destitute. He rec-ognized the needs of his own time and worked veraciously, with heroic virtue, to serve those on the margins of society, demon-strating to them the mercy and love of Our Lord. How great is his witness needed today! On Oct. 31, Father McGivney will be beatified at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut. This beatification is a blessing for the Knights of Columbus, and it is also a great bless-ing for the entire Church. All Catholics and people of good will are invited to learn about Venerable Father McGivney and strive to emulate the tremendous virtue he lived out in his daily life.

May all of us take this time to reflect on how we too can be so moved by our faith and zeal for Jesus Christ, that we would serve those in need in ways that might seem impossible. For Father McGivney, there was no feat too great. His confi-dence came not from trust in his own abilities, but instead in the power of God to work through ordinary people to bring about extraordinary good. The Knights of Columbus is comprised of faithful Catholics who believe steadfastly in this reality. They know that their own efforts will always be insufficient. Because they trust in the Lord and follow His call in their lives, they have continued in Father McGivney’s footsteps, building a communi-ty that has done some of the greatest charitable work imaginable, on a scale that is second to no other. Through the intercession of Blessed Michael J. McGivney, may God help us to follow his holy example of charity, fraternity, and courage in accompanying those in most need."
