BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH NEWARK, OHIO Pastor’s Corner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Newark Catholic Update: I am happy to report that 40 students (Juniors and Seniors) are participating in the second Kairos retreat at Newark Catholic this weekend at St. Peter and Paul Retreat Center. Please keep the students in your prayers as this retreat has the potential to be a very powerful faith experience. There have been many blessings at Newark Catholic during this past year, including class retreats at the beginning of the year, two all-school Penance Services, a mission preached by Fr. Josh Wagner, an all school Catholic Identity program that emphasizes the Cardinal Virtues, the rededication of the Chapel, and a good number of students who participated in our March for Life. I am encouraged by the continued spiritual growth at Newark Catholic. The high school years are turbulent ones, as you know. Please continue to pray for all of our young people in the parish that they grow in faith, hope, and love. Catholicism Series: We continue with our series this Tuesday, March 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the School Library. If you haven’t been or have missed some, you will still be able to benefit from each episode as they present one aspect of our faith. This Tuesday’s DVD will focus on the Holy Eucharist: “Word Made Flesh, True Bread From Heaven: The Mystery of the Liturgy and the Eucharist.” Confession During Lent: Hopefully all parishioners who are able will make a sacramental confession during Lent. This coming Wednesday, there will be four priests (myself included) for our Parish Penance Service starting at 7:00 p.m. I continue to offer Confessions every Saturday from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and every Tuesday from 5:30-6:00 p.m. During the Mission (March 17th-21st), Fr. George McInnis will be available for an hour before and after each Mission to hear Confessions. Our School will be having a School Penance Service on Tuesday, March 19th at 10:15 a.m. for the schoolchildren. (I added this when I realized I would only be able to get three additional priests for our Parish Penance Service). If none of these times will work for you, please call me at the parish office to arrange another time. Mission Week: Please see the bulletin for the enclosed flyer highlighting Mission Week at Blessed Sacrament, March 17th-21st. I look forward to making this Mission together as a Parish Retreat. Please take advantage as your schedule permits to attend daily Mass, spend time in Adoration, attend the Mission Talks, and spend time afterwards to visit with your fellow parishioners in our socials each night after the Mission. Please continue to pray for the success of our Mission! God bless, Fr. Wilson Mass Intentions for the Week of March 10th Tuesday, Lenten Weekday 6:15 P.M. Choose Life… Columnist George Will writes from time to time about his Down Syndrome son Jon, now 40 years old, considered a gift by all who know him. “We should ponder (the practice that allows) our society (to) conduct a search and destroy mission to wipe people like Jon Will off the face of the earth. And it won’t end with eugenic abortion. The odor of infanticide is in the wind too. Not only that, but people like my friend who become developmentally or cognitively disabled after birth could well also be targeted one day for mercy killing or refused necessary medical treatment toward the end that they die sooner rather than later. It has happened in history before. And with people like Terri Schiavo, it is happening here and now. (Wesley J. Smith, on his Internet blog)

40 Days for Life is February 13th-March 24th

The Greater Columbus community is uniting with hundreds of cities from all 50 states in the 40 Days for Life campaign. Faithful believers are praying that this effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in America. This peaceful Prayer Vigil is taking place in Columbus at the Abortion Mill called “Complete Healthcare for Women” (5888 Cleveland Avenue) between the hours of 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Participants are asked to volunteer for one-hour shifts and sign a statement of peace. Cars can be parked at St. John Chrysostom Church, 5858 Cleveland Avenue (1 block south of the mill). Visit www.40daysforlife.com/columbus.

Pray to end abortion and for the respect for all human life. Join us on Saturday, March 16th at the Newark Downtown Gazebo as we pray the Rosary at 12:00 noon, followed by an ecumenical “Prayer on the Square” at 1:00 p.m. Let us all stand up against this great injustice of our time.

Parish PrayerlineFor the month of March the entire parish is requested to pray:Pope Benedict XVI’s Intentions for March:

• Respect for Nature. That respect for nature may grow with the awareness that all creation is God’s work entrusted to human responsibility.

• Clergy. That bishops, priests, and deacons may be tireless messengers of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Father Wilson’s Intention. That all of the sick of the parish would experience healing, strength, and peace.

The Catholic Relief Services CollectionAmen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me (Mt 25:40).Today, we are reminded of the Gospel message to love all our brothers and sisters around the world and treat them with respect. The Catholic Relief Services Collection sees Jesus in victims of human trafficking, those who seek to change unjust laws, and those who need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance across the globe. How will you help Jesus in disguise? Please be generous in today’s Collection.

We will not have RCIA class, CCD classes or Evening Prayer with Exposition on Sunday, March 17th but everyone is invited to the Parish Mission with Fr. McInnis at 7:00 p.m. starting Sunday, March 17th. RCIA, CCD and Evening Prayer with Exposition and Benediction will be held the following Sunday, March 24th.

Everyone is encouraged to begin Holy Week by participating in the Annual Palm Sunday Ecumenical Procession on Sunday, March 24th at 10:00 a.m. as we gather with other churches from East Newark at the downtown Newark Gazebo. We will have a short prayer service then precede down East Main Street to Blessed Sacrament Church. For more information, call the parish office at 345-4290.

New this month, in your Stewardship Envelope Packet, is the School Support Envelope which replaces the Dollar-a-Day envelope. Thank you for your continued support of Catholic Education at Blessed Sacrament School.

Catholic Relief Services’ Rice BowlThe pope has declared this Year of Faith as an intentional time for Catholics to deepen our faith in Christ. In light of this, the CRS Rice Bowl can provide opportunities for parishioners and ministries in our parish to live out the spirit of Lent fully and can serve as a means to help families and faith communities enter into a journey that lasts a lifetime — a renewed conversion to the Lord. Operation Rice Bowl highlights the beauty of the Lenten trio: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Take a Rice Bowl home with you today and once filled, drop in the weekend collection basket by Sunday, March 31st.
