Dear Knights Fans,
The spirit of the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights
is everywhere I go! As athletes, coaches, students,
parents, and sponsors gather on “Knights Hill” and
near “Jordan’s Walk,” we feel excitement and school
spirit in the air.
May we demonstrate true sportsmanship, pride, and
respect for both teams in a manner that brings joy to
Knights everywhere.
We especially appreciate our benefactors, sponsors,
and businesses that support our school and the print-
ing of this fi ne program. The community is vital to
our success and their sponsorship means a great deal
to us; please offer them your patronage whenever
possible. Enjoy the game tonight, and all the home
sporting events here at “Barham-Sowers Field.” Go
Knights!

BLESSED SACRAMENT HUGUENOT 2009 FOOTBALL PROGRAM10
Photo by Roslyn RyanA three-prong approach: Running backs Chris Howard, Deon Watts and John Moore will be the Knights' not-so-secret weapon this season.
By Richard CarrierPowhatan Today Contributing Writer
Ten days into two-a-day practice sessions the foot-ball coaching staff at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot is beginning to understand the problems, as well as the potential, for the 2009 season.
The Knights lost nine seniors, including eight starters off last year’s undefeated regular season squad, which ended a very successful 12-1 season with its one loss coming in the State Championship game.
The Knights entered this summer’s practices with the knowledge that in the running back, linebacker and quarter back slots, “we have some terrifi c skill players,” said Head Coach Mike Henderson. With an incredible group of linebackers, a three-year starter and leader at quarterback and six good running backs the league has no one better at those positions, said Henderson.
On the surface this would appear to put the Knights in a very strong position to defend their Virginia Com-monwealth Conference Championship.
However, those six running backs are also the top defensive backs and linebackers and, by actual num-bers, make up 25 percent of the total of 10th through 12th graders on the squad. It will require an extreme-ly well thought out chess match of substitutions to keep these six players fresh on both sides of the ball.
Coach Henderson has perpetually preached reli-ance on a solid offensive line as the cornerstone of offensive effectiveness. “You just gotta get it done up front and [that] was our biggest loss from last year,” Henderson said, but again the Knights will fi eld an accomplished front line. “I’m comfortable with the starting offensive line,” Henderson said. “But we have very little depth” — (23 upperclassmen and six fresh-man will suit up for games)— “and very little experi-ence behind the starting fi ve.”
But experience is relative. Senior Aaron Johnson
Creativity will be key for Knights this year

elected to fi ll the starting center position, but his ex-perience has been at running back. Coach Henderson is not concerned, however. “He (Johnson) is very smart; a coaches dream.” Coach Henderson credits the new group as being smart, cohe-sive and a group that moves well.
“I like it [the O-line] a lot, but I’m concerned about their depth,” he added.
Injuries to the offensive line have the potential to have a devastating effect on the performance of a star studded backfi eld. The starting offensive line will also make up a smallish defensive line.
“There will be no Chris Sills or Nathan Smiths to control the line of scrimmage,” Henderson said.
The Knights will virtually abandon the passing game and will not even line up with a tight end 75 percent of the time. Coach Henderson admitted that there would be some very creative use of his running backs but, beyond the ad-mission that the three top running backs would often be used at the same time, he was not ready to reveal what new wrinkles the Knights might show.
Transfers David Lewis and Justin Yancey will have the opportunity to work into the rotation. T.J Dobrucky (“He’s a beast,” says Hen-derson), Matt Wyman (“He loves the offensive line and can become a leader”) and Nathan Settles are expected to be major contributors off last year’s junior varsity squad. While there have been no complete surprises,
Nathan Temple has impressed with his progress. The coaching staff will be without Corey Fulcher this
year, but responsibilities have been rearranged and Lonnie Johnson has been added to the staff as an offensive line and linebacker coach.
“While we go into every season with the same expecta-tions, to win the VCC and the State Championship,” Hen-derson said, “we try to instill in the kids that these are not givens. This year we have to concentrate on being a better football team after each practice. We can’t focus on the big picture. We must concentrate on the small things.”
This article originally published in Powhatan Today on August 19, 2009.

BSH 17, Roanoke 7
The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy football team left Roanoke last Friday night with a stellar 17-7 victory over North Cross School, but it took al-most the entire three hour bus ride back to Powhatan before anyone let out a breath. “They are a tremendous football team, with two really great running backs, “said Head Coach Mike Henderson. “If we have to meet them again I wouldn’t promise the same results.”
Coach Henderson was quick to point out that the win was big, particularly against this formidable opponent and in such sapping heat and humidity (both squads experienced numerous heat related cramps), but it also served to point out ar-eas that had to be corrected. Obviously the kicking game; BSH has made only one of fi ve fi eld goal attempts, which highlights the other glaring defi ciency, short yardage success, particularly near the goal line.
Complimenting the “solid play” of Leboff, Moore had 16 tackles, Gavin Paul; “he kind of fl ies under the radar,” added 14. Chris Sill was an effective comple-ment at the end opposite Leboff and “kept constant pressure on the quarterback.” Kendall Trainum assumed his normal role of blanketing the opponents’’ best receiver and his coach has already detected that op-posing quarterbacks have a tendency not to throw in his direction. Chris Howard had nine carries for 52 yards
Sept 5
BSH 62, Tidewater Academy 6
It was one of those games where the statistics lied. Blessed Sacrament Hugue-not had only two fi rst downs as visiting Tidewater Academy notched four in the fi rst quarter last Thursday evening. BSH quarterback Austin Wingfi eld completed only fi ve passes in the entire game, all in the fi rst quarter. Featured running back
Deon Watts carried the ball exactly one time the entire contest, also in the fi rst quarter. Tight end Russ Leboff caught one ball, again in the fi rst quarter. But, at the end of that fi rst period, Blessed Sacrament led 41-0 in route to a 62-6 victory over the out-gunned, but extremely tough War-riors.
Sept. 12
BSH 14, BA 0
The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot foot-ball team took the long bus rider to the Eastern Shore to face non-divisional pow-erhouse Broadwater Academy. (The Vi-kings went 11-1 last season and played for the State Championship). The Knights left Exmore in the early evening with a 14-0 win and an unblemished 4-0 record.
BSH relied on its defense to hold off the Vikings as neither squad got any where near the opponent’s goal line for three quarters. Deon Watts, Kendall Trainum,
BLESSED SACRAMENT HUGUENOT 2009 FOOTBALL PROGRAM26
Chris Sill, Russ Leboff and Chris Howard led the Knights’ defense and stifl ed the Vi-kings’ running game.
Coach Henderson’s halftime adjust-ments included putting Watts at quarter-back, as a runner. He responded with 86 yards on 14 carries.
The Broadwater game plan took tight end Russ Leboff completely off the board, but Kendall Trainum shook loose for six catches for 100 yards, including the 50-yard game clincher.
Still “we didn’t throw the ball well,” Henderson said. However, he was im-pressed with the 182 total yards the Knights churned out on the ground against a very stout Vikings defense. Watts’ 86 yards led all runners and Chris Howard added 60 yards on 12 carries.
Sept 19
BSH 48, GCA 0
Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy man-handled the visiting Greenbrier Christian Academy Gators during the opening half, were dominated in turn by the Gators, particularly in the third quarter and won 48-0. “Its hard not to pleased with a 48-0 win, but I didn’t think we played that great; we could have played better,” said Head Coach Mike Henderson of the Knights’ fi fth straight victory.
Sept. 26
BSH 19, IOW 0
It was all about the defense as the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Knights faced off against three time defending State Champion Isle of Wight Academy, shut the high-octane Chargers’ offense down and shut the VISSA’s number one ranked team out.
The Knights’ 19-0 win was a product of a blitzkrieg defense which stole four of IOW quarterback Daniel Brown’s passes. JBSH’s mostly second unit stepped up late in the game and prevented the undefeated Chargers from putting any points on the board. On their fi nal drive the Chargers took off from their 24 and, on the legs and arm of Brown, drove to the Knights’ 20. Conner Paul defended the second down
pass and Brandon Carter leaped up to smother Brown’s third down attempt. The Chargers attempt to put something on the board failed when the fourth down fi eld goal attempt was very short.
Coach Henderson praised his offensive line; a complete unit for the fi rst time this season, noting the outstanding efforts of Sill and Smith.
Oct. 24
BSH 10, RC 7
It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t really conclusive, but the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy Knights out-fought the Roanoke Catholic Celtics to take a 10-7 win and run their 2008 record to an as-tounding 10-0. “It was a shame that some-one had to loose this game,” was the way Head Coach Mike Henderson phrased it.
Wingfi eld was effi cient with a 10-14 performance (one TD and one Int.) but his 69 total passing yards were a solid indica-tion of how precious yardage was for both squads. ”
Oct. 31
BSH 35, SA 7
The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Academy Knights traveled to Southamp-ton Academy with a plan; build a substan-tial lead early and get the starters out to avoid injury prior to the start of this week’s playoffs and build the development of the younger players. Coach Mike Henderson’s charges could not have followed the script any better.
With only one minute gone in the sec-ond quarter, the Knights had piled up 35 points, most of the starters would not see another down that evening and the second and third units played almost three quar-ters of football in the 35-7 win.
Senior Chris Sill, 6’2”, 263 pounds, re-corded seven tackles, a game’s worth, in the fi rst quarter. Highlighting what the Knights coaching staff had hoped to achieve; avoiding injury and having the younger players develop, Sill’s younger brother replaced him. Freshman Ethan Sills, 6’1”, 192 pounds racked up eight in-dividual tackles. “The back-up defense
played pretty well,” Coach Henderson said. “The second unit offense struggled.”
Nov. 7
BSH 23, HC 13
Missed scoring opportunities, mental mistakes, injuries and defensive break-downs made it more diffi cult than it should have been, but the Blessed Sacra-ment Huguenot Knights prevailed 23-13 over the Hampton Christian Warriors in the VIS State Semifi nals.
Kendall Trainum, who, according to Head Coach Mike Henderson “had the best fi rst half he’s ever played,” served notice on the opening kickoff that the Warriors were going to have to account for him on every down.
“We played hard but we didn’t play well,” Henderson said. “We did not capi-talize on our scoring opportunities inside the 35. Fumbles and penalties hurt us.”Nov. 14
Nov. 14
Northcross 21, BSH 6
The two teams involved in the VISSA Division Three State Championship game had simple game plans.
For undefeated and top-ranked Blessed Sacrament Huguenot, it was control the pace of the game and prevent the big play.
For number two and once-defeated (at the hands of the Knights) Northcross School it was control the pace of the game and take the big play when, and if, it be-came available.
Ultimately, Northcross’ plan worked as they scored on three big plays, kept the Knights ground game under control and stifl ed the BSH passing attack to take the Championship by a 21-6 score.
“We knew going in they had two big play threats,” Coach Mike Henderson said. “One big pass play (to Brown) and one big running play (by Caveness) and we’re down 14-6.”
The Knights fought, but forced into an ineffectual catch-up passing game, they could not recover.
