What is Holding You Back?

“Even though you may want to move forward in your life, you may have one foot on the brakes. In order to be free, we must learn how to let go. Release the hurt. Release the fear. Refuse to entertain your old pain. The energy it takes to hang onto the past is holding you back from a new life. What is it you would let go of today?”

Mary Manin Morrissey

Do you want to move forward in your life? Do you want to cure your phobia and get on with your life? Most people would answer ‘yes’ to these questions. So why are you not successful in curing your phobia? If all it takes is the desire, then what’s holding you back?

Obviously it’s not just as simple as wanting it to happen. If you want to move forward with your life, but feel that something is holding you back, know that you are not alone. Many people feel like this but don’t bother to find out the root of their hindrance. They never look into the “why” of their block. Others know why they are holding themselves back but for various reasons choose not to do anything about it.

If you feel ready to push forward but seem to not be able to actually make that push, we are here to help. It is very likely that you are being stopped by a mental block.

What is a mental block? The dictionary defines it as:

“An inability to remember or think of something you can normally do; often caused by emotional tension.”

The wording of this definition is important. Obviously, it identifies that the mental block is often caused by emotional tension. More importantly, it explains that the emotional tension is preventing you from doing something that you normally can do.

So…remove the emotional tension and you’ll be functioning normally again – and ready to make that push towards success!

How can I get rid of this mental block?

The quick answer is EFT…and we will explain why and how!

There are many forms of block which may lead you to believe that you can’t use NLP or EFT, such as not understanding how they work. There’s also not being used to trying new things or not thinking that you’re the sort of person who would use them.

In terms of results, EFT and NLP are very similar in that they both make changes…fast.

• Neither of them requires you to re-live an upsetting experience. • They are both quick and easy to perform. • They can both be performed pretty much anywhere. • You don’t have to ‘believe in them.’ • You don’t have to understand how they work.

In fact, NLP and EFT are often used together, to compliment each other and obtain stronger, faster results.

The Top Ten most common mental blocks …and how to get rid of them

1. Thinking that there is only one solution to a problem This implies that there is only one right answer to any given question. We are taught in school to come up with the ‘right’ answer.

Do you know how many people became disillusioned and felt a failure because the particular type of Self Help that they had chosen didn’t work for them? They thought that the one method that they tried would be the ‘right’ one – and it wasn’t. So they gave up. That is sad. But, crucially, it also created more than one mental block for these people.

Even though these people may not have realised it on a conscious level, their experience taught them that

• They were a failure • It was pointless trying to improve as nothing worked • It’s better to stay in their current ‘comfort-zone’ (which was previously not

where they wanted to be) rather than expose themselves to the feelings of failure and disappointment that another attempt at improvement may subject them to.

In life, however, there is often more than one ‘right’ answer and it’s well worth trying again, especially if the answer will make a huge difference to your life.

Let’s look at those three points again.

• Are you really a failure? No one is a total failure. We all have weaknesses but we also have strengths. Don’t let your weakness be that you’re not open-minded enough to try again. Let your strength be that you go for it!

• So nothing works. Have you tried everything? Honestly??? • Your comfort-zone is a great place to be but you want more from your life.

That is why you are reading this now… so you have already overcome that block!

If you’re still hesitant, ask yourself the following question – “What have I got to lose?”

2. I’m a Logical Thinker It may seem odd to have this as a mental block. Surely being a logical thinker is strength, especially in the business world?

If you’re evaluating a business proposal, working on your balance sheets or a new business plan then the answer is yes. However, in order to be open to new ideas, new creative input and especially methods of potential self-improvement, it is necessary to be able to put aside your logical brain and allow yourself to look beyond the boundaries of pure logic.

If you are used to thinking logically and methodically, this may take a little time and effort but the rewards are well worth it. As we said in the previous ‘block’, you are reading this now so you are already opening up to the possibility that what you are about to experience may sound too good to be true on a logical level – but is entirely possible on an innovative level.

Let’s look at that in a little more depth. In fact, both NLP and EFT are perfectly acceptable on a logical level – just not your level of logic… unless you have already read a lot about it and understand how it works. Most logic is based on simplicity and results and those are the cornerstones of NLP and EFT.

If you’re still not sure, comfort yourself with the thought that many other logically thinking high-fliers have used NLP for self-improvement. If the President of the United States is willing to try it – why not you?

3. I don’t usually do this kind of thing… …and you’re not alone, which is why many people never progress. They’re not willing to open up, not willing to try something new and not willing to take a chance.

The world is full of people who live by the rules. These rules could be ones that their parents followed, so following those same rules makes them feel ‘safe’ and within secure boundaries.

The rules may have been set by themselves, shaped by their own personalities. If so, these people either do not even realize that it is possible to change both their personalities and their rules – or they do realise it but they lack the ambition and drive to make those changes a reality. Or, they’re too frightened to ‘rock the boat’.

Fear is probably one of the most common mental blocks and in one form or another, would feature in every one of these Top Ten mental blocks. Let’s look at how fear can block you from changing and moving forward. The most common blocking fears are

• Fear of failure • Fear of success • Fear of change • Fear of disappointment • Fear of humiliation • Fear of being thought ‘odd’ • Fear of being not good enough • Fear of wasting time on something that won’t work • Fear of the unknown • Fear of something that you don’t understand • Fear of having to admit that you don’t understand something or how it works • Fear of having your trust broken

That is just a short list – there are many other fears!

Break the Rules!

“Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something!” Thomas A. Edison

Just looking at that short list makes it easier to understand why many people don’t readily step outside their own (or other people’s) rules. It also shows why entrepreneurs like Richard Branson are so celebrated…and so successful! They are brave enough to actively break the rules and either learn to cope with their fears or disregard them altogether.

Other highly successful people, like Anthony Robbins, don’t ask “Why should I do that?” Their question is “Why shouldn’t I do that?”

Will you be next…?

4. Being too Practical

Just like being logical, being practical is considered a valuable necessity in many areas of life. However, just as being too logical can hold you back, so can being too practical.

Think of a few areas in your life or your business where you don’t fully understand how something works – but you trust others to understand it and work it for you. You don’t have to run a large business to see how this works. Imagine email. Do you understand how it actually works? The chances are that you don’t. Not only that, you have too much going on in your life and work to take the time to learn how it works. You just trust that Hotmail, Gmail, AOL or whoever it might be, do understand it and keep your emails sending and receiving.

Life is too short to understand everything. That in itself is impractical. So, your mind overrides the block that you don’t understand how something works and you are just going to have to trust that whoever is providing it knows what they are talking about.

If you don’t know anything about NLP or EFT and don’t have the time or the inclination to study them, then just trust us on this. We do have the time and the inclination and have spent years working with them and seeing the positive results.

If you’re still sceptical, try asking yourself “What if it does work for me?” Then allow yourself to imagine the results. Now, isn’t it worth a try?

5. Work and Play should be separate. If your main area of concern is your business or work life, you may view spending time on something like NLP or EFT as ‘play’ time as it’s a bit of an unknown quantity and therefore hard to schedule into your business day or world. This way of thinking could prevent you ever getting started.

Let us enlighten you. EFT can be used in every area of your life. It’s that simple.

If you choose to view it as a tool to improve your own business performance then you will find that you can schedule it into your day quite easily.

6. NLP and EFT Aren’t My Kind of Thing Nowadays, people are very quick to slap labels on themselves and others. Ironically, we live in a society where there is so much on offer and more freedom of choice than ever before. And yet these self-imposed, self-limiting categories seem more prevalent than ever.

It has even given rise to a popular saying. Those who “think outside of the box” are prized individuals.

If you are willing to be one of those free thinkers, you will first have to lose your own personal label.

If you think you are not the sort of person who has ever tried any form of self-help, or you just haven’t tried NLP or EFT, then look again. You are reading this, so you are open to new ideas, the possibility of change and the potential for improvement. Doesn’t that feel great?

7. I’m a “Serious” Person Civilised society can be simplified as a group of people who conform, are consistent, have shared values and tend to have similar thoughts and views to others in the group.

Remember that phrase “thinking outside of the box?” It’s not so easy to do when you are expected to conform, be consistent, have shared values and maintain similar thoughts and views to others in your group. Thinking about or trying anything ‘new’, immediately marks you out as different in some way. The natural reaction to that is panic. We don’t wish to be seen as different from our peers or our group. We want to fit in and be accepted.

To that end, we adopt the persona of a “serious” person who takes all of those values seriously and doesn’t mess about with anything that hasn’t already been tried by the group, accepted by the group and implemented by the group into everyday living.

If you view NLP or EFT as something outside of the ‘norm’ then this category may apply to you and may be the cause of your block.

Now look at the group again. Although the group are similar in many basic ways, even within that group there are winners and losers, leaders and followers,

12

successes and failures. What has marked out the winners, leaders and successes? Are they risk takers? What is it that they do differently from everyone else that makes them rise to the top?

Are they viewed as valuable and ‘serious’ members of the group and society? You bet!

Now, is trying something ‘different’ really such a risk to your credibility?

8. Avoiding Uncertainty

“A man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

André Gide

Do you tend to cling to a certain way of life or working? Do you want to break free of this comfort zone? Is this fear of uncertainty blocking your progress?

Feeling certain about something is a core desire for most people. We need certainty to feel safe and secure. Some people crave it so much that they actively avoid anything that is uncertain.

That could mean the avoidance of changing jobs, moving home, changing partners, or even never doing their weekly grocery shop somewhere different.

This means avoiding anything unless it is likely to have a certain outcome. These people fear the unknown and are unwilling to put themselves into a situation where they are not in control and the outcome could potentially change everything that they are already certain about.

Living like this can lead to a complete lack of change.

Bizarrely, another core desire for most people is uncertainty. This sounds like the direct opposite which doesn’t make sense. But it does.

Imagine a life where you are sure of everything. You do your 9 – 5 job. You catch the same bus home. You eat your dinner at the same time. You watch the same

13

TV programmes at the same times and you go to bed at the same time. Then tomorrow, you get up at the same time and do it all again. Boring? Oh, yes!

But, it is the way that millions of people live their lives. Some question it. Others don’t.

If you are here, reading this, then it is highly likely that you are already questioning it. Your desire for uncertainty has already over-ridden your desire for certainty. In other words, you’re either bored out of your mind with what you’re doing or who you are – or you’ve consciously made the choice that you want to actively change and improve your life. Either way, you want to change.

9. I’m Terrified of Getting it Wrong

"A man who never made a mistake never made anything." David Gemmell

“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. “ Thomas A. Edison

Thomas Edison was the first person to ever have a light-bulb moment. He invented them – but it took him over 1,800 tries before he got it right! That’s persistence! Imagine how different the world would be now if he had given up.

Everyone makes mistakes. The secret is to learn from them – not give up after making them.

Try and view your mistakes as ‘try-outs’ or experiences, rather than failures. Adopt a ‘what-if’ approach and take it from there. If it doesn’t work, try again with a slightly different approach.

If you’ve already tried self-help methods and feel that you somehow ‘got it wrong’ (and many, many people feel like this) – just reassure yourself that you just tried something that didn’t work for you. Try something else. Try NLP or EFT. We’re confident that they will work for you!

10. I Can’t Think Like That This brings us back to ‘thinking outside of the box’. You may believe that EFT and NLP is not for you because you associate it with new-age, long haired hippies, growing their own lentils and living in a commune.

Wrong!

For example, NLP is used by top-class athletes, like Andre Agassi and Greg Norman. As we previously mentioned, it has also been used by a President of the United States. We’re pretty sure he doesn’t grow his own lentils!

You don’t need to be a seeker of spiritual enlightenment, a yoga enthusiast, wear anything tie-dyed or take your holidays in India or the foothills of the Himalayas to use NLP or EFT.

All you need is a willingness to improve your life in any way that you choose. Give it a try. What’s the worst that can happen? And you have so much to gain. More than you ever dreamed possible. We’re so excited for you!

All About EFT

And Why It Will Be Your New Best Friend!

Who discovered it? EFT was created by Gary Craig following his training with Roger Callahan in the early 1990’s. Callahan was teaching Craig, his first student, the procedure that he called Voice Technology and Thought Field Therapy (TFT). Craig discovered that the sequence of tapping points was not important and so, by the mid 1990’s, he had refined Callahan’s technique into what is now EFT.

What is it? EFT stands for Energy Freedom Technique. It is a simple but very effective technique which involves using the fingers to tap on specific points on the body while thinking about a memory or emotion that is troublesome. The points on the body correspond to energy meridians recognized by Chinese medicine and used in acupuncture.

How Does it Work? EFT works on the same theory as acupuncture, a form of medicine that has been used successfully for thousands of years.

That theory is that negative emotions – which are not only distressing, but which lead to many physical illnesses – are caused by disturbances in the energy field of the body. Tapping on the energy meridians with the fingers replaces the traditional use of acupuncture needles and works by changing the energy field of the body, restoring the energy flows and bringing the body back into balance.

How Negative Emotions may lead to Phobias and Physical illness The following stages occur:

The person undergoes a negative experience

This leads to negative emotions

The negative emotions disrupt the body’s energy flows

EFT contends that just treating the negative experience is not enough, because doing that will not correct the imbalances in the energy system.

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

16

According to EFT, the negative emotions must be cured and the energy balance restored, in order to achieve the most successful treatment.

This is similar to the beliefs of NLP, where the negative thought processes are cleared and then replaced with positive ones.

The Synergistic Benefits of EFT Gary Craig himself describes EFT as combining two already well-established sciences:

1. Mind/Body Medicine 2. Acupuncture

When either of these therapies are used on their own, the results are impressive, but combining the two into EFT gives what Craig calls “a profound synergistic effect.”

What is Synergy? The dictionary defines it as:

The simultaneous joint action of separate parties (i.e. Mind/Body Medicine and Acupuncture) which together (used as EFT) have greater total effect than the sum of their individual effects.

Benefits of EFT

• EFT can be used on its’ own or in combination with any other therapy. • Used alone, EFT is often quicker and more effective that other emotional

therapies. • You will quickly see results. • EFT will clear your emotional issues, phobias and therefore relieve physical

problems. This is the Mind/Body Medicine element of EFT working. • EFT is safe to be used on just about anything, at any time. • You can do it anywhere. • It is a perfect substitute to acupuncture for people with a fear of needles. • It is safe, quick and effective.

Frequently Asked Questions about EFT

This section contains help for clearing mental blocks so that EFT and NLP can be used effectively And Help for those who need to use EFT instead of NLP because they find it hard to visualize or feel.

Q. What is EFT? EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique.

See the article in this manual called “All about EFT and why it will be your new best friend!” Q. I’d like to use EFT to get rid of my Phobias. How do I get rid of more than one? It’s best to tackle your phobias one at a time. List your phobias and then work on your worst one first. Get rid of it completely before moving on to address the next one. Just keep going like this until all of your phobias have gone. As you approach the last few phobias, you may start to feel a sense of euphoria. This is quite normal. You are bound to be excited when you realize that you are finally going to be free! EFT has been used very successfully on some people, such as war veterans, who suffer hundreds of painful memories. It was discovered that they only had to work on around 10% of them before a ‘generalisation effect’ kicked in. This is because they worked on the worst ones first and once they were out of the way, the emotional intensity just wasn’t there for the remainder. The ‘generalisation effect’ got rid of them while the 10% were worked on. So don’t feel overwhelmed. Just start working through and monitor how you feel as you go along.

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

18

Complex phobias Some phobias are actually several phobias which have resulted in one big one. In order to treat the one, it is necessary to treat the ‘sub’ phobias. For example, a common phobia is the fear of flying. But this is not simply a fear of flying. It may also be a fear of

• Being in a confined space (claustrophobia) • The fear of falling • A fear of dying • A fear of turbulence • A fear of taking off • A fear of landing • A fear of being with too many people • A fear of loss of control

So in order to treat the fear of flying, it would be necessary to treat each of the above. Try breaking your phobia down into as many ‘parts’ as possible and treat each one in turn.

Q. I have a Phobia that’s so bad I can’t even bear to think about it. How could EFT help me? The beauty of both EFT and NLP is that you don’t need to relive the experience in order to banish it.

We understand that your phobia causes you anguish – even when you’re not directly in a phobic response, the fear that you might be can wreck you life. It’s only natural to bury this fear deep.

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

19

But please be reassured that you don’t need to experience it on an emotional level in order to get rid of it. Just let EFT and NLP do that for you. It’s that simple.

Q. I think my issues are too ‘hidden’ to treat… If you have been trying EFT and don’t feel that you are getting results, it could be that you haven’t addressed the correct issues yet. It is not uncommon for the correct issue to be very well hidden. You have blocked it very successfully and it might take a little detective work to find it before you can treat it. You may be so used to repressing an emotional state or living with it that you may not even recognize it as something which needs to be addressed. Try asking yourself the following questions and monitor your emotional response to the answers honestly -

• Do you –honestly – have any feelings of inadequacy because you never managed to achieve what you, your parents, or society expected?

• Do you have any fears that you have ‘forgotten’ or ‘live with’? This could be something as simple as a TV programme that used to frighten you - so don’t dismiss anything out of hand.

• Do you still carry a feeling of guilt for something that you did (or didn’t do)? This could relate to guilt for anything.

• If you could live your life over again, are there any people or events that you would prefer to leave out?"

• When was the last time that you cried and why? • Who or what makes you angry and why? • What is the biggest sadness or regret in your life? • What is missing to make your life perfect? • Name three fears you would like to be rid of. • Do you believe that you will you be going to Heaven? • Is there anything that you wish you had never done?

Use your responses to those questions as areas to address.

Q. My issue is really beyond help. I don’t think EFT will work. It is not uncommon for someone to have an issue that is so overwhelming that they believe it is beyond any help. It may be a huge guilt over something that happened (or didn’t happen), it could be a trauma or fear of some kind that they just don’t

20

want to look at again. Whatever it is, it is too big for them to even mention to a Doctor or therapist.

They would rather just ‘forget’ that it ever happened and hope that if they ignore it, it will go away. The problem is that these ‘big issues’ never do go away. They live under the surface of everything that the person does and affect every aspect of their lives – even if they refuse to realize it.

The person will happily seek help for the other, smaller issues (often caused by the large one) in the hopes that it will keep the larger one at bay. This may work for a while but in time, the smaller issues will return and the larger one is still where it was. Untouched and untreated.

If you are even realizing that you have a big issue to deal with…one day…then that is a huge step forward.

EFT is wonderful for helping with these ‘big issues’ as you can chip away at it, bit by bit, as much as you feel comfortable with.

Step 1. The first step is to find somewhere quiet and undisturbed. Say

“I am going to approach my big issue” (you don’t even have to name it).

As you say this, note your physical reaction. It could be that your heart starts to pound, you may start to sweat or get sweaty palms, or your throat may feel as if it is closing. Give each of those reactions a mark out of ten, with 0 being no reaction and 10 being an overwhelming reaction.

Step 2. Now, use EFT to deal with those physical reactions, using the following words or words appropriate to your reaction:

(tap meridian points as described in the chapter ‘Now - Use EFT to Bust Through Those Blocks!’)

(Complete each phrase with the words “…I deeply and completely accept myself.”)

"Even though I feel great discomfort even thinking about this issue....."

"Even though this thing seems much too big for me to even think about....."

"Even though just thinking about it makes me physically react...."

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

21

"Even though I can feel my heart pounding...."

"Even though my palms feel sweaty (continue with the other physical symptoms)...."

Don’t worry about the issue itself at the moment as all we are doing is minimizing your physical reaction to it. You may have to repeat the above several times.

Step 3. Once you feel more relaxed, say again....

“I am going to approach my big issue”

As before, note your reactions on a scale of 0 – 10. Your emotional and physical reactions should be lower. If they are not significantly lower, return to Step 2. again and repeat the EFT until your reactions are marked lower on the scale.

Step 4. Once they are, then ask yourself

“Is there any part of this issue that I can think about comfortably?”

If there is, then allow yourself to think about it and then rate your reactions as before.

Step 5. Now, it’s just a case of repetition. You will go into more and more detail about the issue – breaking it into manageable chunks and returning to monitor your reactions so that you are never stressing yourself unduly.

Q. Isn’t it important to explore my issue in depth to truly deal with it? Wouldn’t a ‘quick fix’ avoid this exploration and therefore not really get rid of it? For many years, it has been believed and widely accepted that in order to get rid of a deep emotional problem, it is necessary to probe into the very depths of a person’s mind to find the root cause of the problem in order to deal with it. Therefore, any method that does not do this is looked upon with some level of suspicion and scepticism. The fact is that if the problem can be solved quickly and easily, without delving deeply into the workings of the person’s mind, then there is no need to do so. The problem is solved so why delve?

Hundreds of people who have been relieved of very intense memories, fear-related issues and mental blocks have been successfully treated with EFT. It is observed that they have an almost instantaneous shift of attitude regarding their issue. They are happy to talk about it, where previously it was very difficult for them. They cease to fear the issue and move forwards to understanding it. They don’t feel a need to talk about it any more as it has simply ceased to be. Extreme or long-standing Phobias With EFT it doesn’t matter how debilitating the phobia is or how long you have suffered with it. This goes against the conventional thinking that the longer someone has had a phobia the longer it will take to treat and eliminate it. It is true that some phobias may take longer to get rid of than others but that is not because of the length of time you had had them or how intense they are. It is due to the number of aspects involved in that phobia, i.e. how complex it is. For further information on complexity, read the FAQ for “I have several phobias.”

Q. I’ve read that my brain’s response to my Phobia ‘protects’ me by warning me and making me get out of ‘danger’. If EFT or NLP gets rid of that response, isn’t it also stopping my brain from keeping me ‘safe’? No – because the intense fear induced during a phobic reaction is (although very real to the sufferer) most often an inappropriate response, that has been made habitual over time.

It’s correct to believe that our fears actually help us, but only to a point. A phobia is fear that has gone to the extreme. The symptoms of a phobia, such as your heart pounding, a sick headache, sweating or crying are huge fear ‘over-reactions’ that don’t make you any more safe than ‘normal’ fear. The excessive reactions just make you suffer and limit your life.

EFT is great for phobia treatment as it gets rid of the extreme phobic reaction but leaves the person with a normal level of caution or concern about a situation.

Losing that fear will not put you in danger. It will release you from a prison of needless worry and terror that has ruled your life for too long.

Q. What should I say while I’m doing EFT? Try asking yourself how you would describe your issue to a friend. So, for example, you might say to them “My back is so painful that I can’t even bend over.” So, while performing EFT you would say “Even though my back is so painful that I can’t even bend over, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

Or, you may say to a friend “I’m so angry that the shop assistant acted as if I was invisible…” So, while performing EFT you would say “Even though I’m so angry that the shop assistant acted as if I was invisible, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

You can also use this technique to work more deeply on the issue. Imagine your friend’s response to what you have said. This imagined conversation (or real one!) may bring more layers of the issue to light. For example, your angry reaction to the shop assistants’ treatment of you may point to a larger issue of lack of self esteem. Then you can look at that as another area to be treated by EFT.

Q. Are the results of EFT due to a placebo effect or distraction? No – they’re not. In studies where placebos are used, it is required that the participants have some belief in the treatment that they are receiving, even if it turns out that they were given the placebo.

People who are completely new to EFT rarely have full belief in the process. They most often approach it with the attitude that they have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so they might as well give it a try. EFT and NLP both work just fine with that attitude.

Regarding distraction – although EFT and NLP both appear to be methods of distraction, they won’t work if you are distracted during the process. They do require a level of concentration.

Q. I thought that the whole point of affirmations was that they are positive. EFT seems to focus on the negative? Wouldn’t I get better results using all positive words? We agree that this can seem confusing. Affirmations are classically positive in style, ‘pumping up’ the person to talk themselves into improving.

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

24

However, if you have a mental block about the issue which you want to address, you can recite positive affirmations until you are blue in the face but they will have no effect as your brain will reject them. It will continue to ‘protect’ you by putting up that familiar wall, which the positive affirmations will bounce right off.

EFT works because it gets rid of the negative and therefore gets rid of the mental block…clearing the way for the positive to come in.

Q. Can EFT make me "feel worse"? In some rare cases, the answer is yes. But, ironically this is a positive thing.

If you are suffering from a phobia and many general anxieties as well, it is possible that the EFT will clear the general anxieties, leaving you with the phobia, which now seems worse by comparison.

This is positive because it means that the phobia can no longer ‘hide’ behind the general anxieties and it can easily be dealt with by a few more sessions of EFT.

Please note that this is rare and it is much more likely that the EFT will be effective without you feeling worse.

Q. Are there any negative side effects to EFT? EFT is a gentle process and very rarely has any negative side effects.

In 1997, a questionnaire was sent to 250 EFT therapists asking if their clients had experienced any negative side effects. Out of 10,000 uses of EFT, only 20 cases were reported. This works out at less than ¼ of 1%.

However, this was not an official study and as with all procedures undertaken by an individual, anyone choosing to use EFT must assume full responsibility for any results.

Q. Is there anyone who shouldn’t use EFT or NLP? Unfortunately, some poor people have had such dreadful traumas in their lives or undergone such awful abuse that they have gone on to develop severe psychological problems. These may include multiple personality disorders, paranoia, schizophrenia or other very severe mental disorders. EFT can be helpful even in such severe cases but we strongly recommend that if you suffer from any of the above, that you undertake EFT or NLP ONLY WITH THE PERSONAL HELP OF A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL WHO HAS EXPERIENCE IN USING THESE PROCESSES.

25

This is so that they can monitor your progress and be ‘on hand’ to help you in the event that you run into difficulties.

As previously mentioned, anyone choosing to use EFT must assume full responsibility for any results.

Q. How long do the results of EFT last? If you address the emotions of an issue specifically and one by one, then EFT healings of emotional issues are almost always long lasting.

If an emotional issue does appear to resurface, it is likely that either or both of the following have occurred: 1. What has "come back" is simply a related issue to the original one, that wasn’t covered with the first sessions. Try again, making your words as specific as possible to target that emotional issue. 2. The original problem was addressed too widely and not specifically enough. It may help to break it down into more areas and treat each area in turn.

Physical healings can be very impressive and last for a long time too – but they are more likely to recur than emotional problems. This is because physical issues (especially headaches, backaches, or issues with the digestive system) are very often physical reflections of an emotional problem. If a physical ailment of this nature appears, it is likely that it is not a previous physical issue coming back, but a new physical manifestation of a new emotional issue which needs treating. Try using EFT on the new emotional issue and see if it resolves the physical one too.

Q. Does the person doing EFT have to believe in it? The short answer is no – but if you are highly sceptical, then it pays to be persistent.

What we mean by this is that if you use EFT for a specific issue and appear to get no result, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the EFT hasn’t worked. It is more likely that you have

a) not addressed the issue that really needs work b) not addressed the issue specifically enough c) broken the issue down into many parts and only addressed some of them

Block Buster Manual

26

So, be persistent before deciding that it doesn’t work. It is highly likely that it will work for you!

Q. Can EFT be combined with other techniques? Yes! EFT is extremely flexible. Many people use it alongside other healing methods and find that they get enhanced results.

• EFT is like hypnotherapy but makes it more powerful because it integrates the body's subtle energies.

• EFT is like talk therapy but it has the added advantage of getting to the issues more quickly and resolving them more thoroughly.

• EFT enhances massage therapy by helping the process of emotional relaxation.

• EFT blends extremely well with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy because it helps to get to the issue more quickly and make more Cognitive Shifts. Those shifts are also deeper.

• EFT works beautifully with hypnotherapy because it lets the practitioner take the client even deeper into hypnosis.

• EFT is like Systematic Desensitization but it is much more gentle and often much faster.

• EFT enhances the work of a Chiropractor because it allows the practitioner to include important emotional issues and to integrate the body's subtle energies into the treatment which is therefore more effective.

• EFT can be described as an emotional version of acupuncture, except that needles are not used. The same energy points are involved but they are stimulated with fingertips instead. This makes EFT the perfect substitute for anyone with a fear of needles.

Q. Is it ok to use EFT during pregnancy? Tapas Fleming, a licensed acupuncturist, one of the most famous users of EFT and the person behind TAT or Tapas Acupressure Technique, cautions that the "inner ankle point" might be contraindicated for pregnancy.

This area, addressed by tapping with the hand across the inside of the leg about four finger widths up from the ankle bone, is not used in our manual – but if you continue to learn more about EFT and its’ applications, then you should be aware of the following.

The advice from Tapas Fleming is as follows:

Block Buster Manual

27

"According to traditional Chinese medicine, the inner ankle point is contraindicated for pregnancy. The rest of the points used by the EFT or TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique) procedures present no danger for use during pregnancy. Even regarding the ankle point, there is a difference of opinion among practitioners of traditional oriental medicine as to whether or not it is truly harmful. But to be conservative, you might want to avoid it if you are pregnant.”

Q. What Does EFT work on? People who routinely use EFT will know that it has the potential to work on pretty much every physical and emotional problem. If applied properly, EFT can either improve or completely eliminate the problem.

However, there is still a lot to be learned about EFT and its’ uses and sometimes the results will depend on how you apply it. This is why we keep repeating that it is necessary to be specific in the areas that you address and how you address them.

Q. Can EFT help me stop smoking or drinking? Yes, it can help you to stop. It can also help with the physical symptoms caused by smoking.

However, if you continue to smoke, drink excessive alcohol, take drugs, or are constantly exposed to pesticides or preservatives, EFT won’t be able to eliminate the long-term effects of these on your body - while it is still being exposed to any of them.

However, if/when the exposure stops, then EFT can definitely help.

Q. If EFT is so obvious, why is it such a recent discovery? Conventional Western medicine is based on the premise that the body is made up of atoms. The study of ailments and subsequent treatments are all based on atomic structure and the physical body.

And yet, atoms are made of energy. So it would be logical and practical to treat the body at its’ energy level – which ancient civilizations have done successfully for thousands of years.

Even though Scientists the world over agree that the body is composed of energy, the field of medicine has been extraordinarily slow to catch up with this…in fact, in the main, they don’t acknowledge it. Some forward thinking Doctors and

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

28

Hospitals now offer Acupuncture as a form of treatment – which is based entirely on the energy fields of the body. But these are very much in the minority.

EFT produces results that cannot be explained by ‘physical medicine’ theories. For example –

• EFT can get rid of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder without the use of psychiatric drugs.

• EFT can banish a phobia that has lasted a lifetime…in minutes. • EFT can eliminate addictions almost immediately. • EFT can cure Carpal Tunnel Syndrome without surgery. • EFT can get rid of an intolerance to Lactose, even though the patient has

been told that their body does not contain the enzymes that are needed to digest milk and its’ products.

• EFT can get rid of migraine headaches, often in a few moments and often forever.

None of these ‘miracles’ are any surprise to an EFT practitioner who sees these sorts of events every day – and yet a Western Medical Doctor would be highly sceptical and disbelieving of them.

However, the use of EFT is growing fast and the time will come when the amazing results cannot be ignored any more by the Medical Community. In the meantime, why wait? Many people who are helped by EFT have already tried conventional medicine and it has failed them. Others use EFT alongside conventional medicine quite happily.

The results speak for themselves. It would be great to think that the ‘miracle’ results obtained by EFT today will be the routine treatments of tomorrow.

It’s Time to Identify and Bust Through Your Blocks and Rid Yourself of Your Phobia for Good!

1. Identifying It… Now we come to the moment where you will begin to not only identify your own blocks regarding curing your phobia (or phobias) but will start to work to eradicate it – or them!

You may already have some idea of why you have not been able to get rid of your phobia before - or, you may have a vague awareness that something is holding you back from taking action to be rid of it, but you just don’t know what it is.

This is a painless, quick, fun and easy technique for identifying your mental blocks about your phobia and then busting right through them. They are limiting your freedom, so go on – bust them!

1. Take a sheet of paper and write on it: My Phobia-Free Future

2. Take another sheet of paper and write on it: Neutral.

3. Take another sheet of paper and write on it: My Mental Blocks.

4. Take another sheet of paper and write on it: My Current Situation.

5. Now, place the sheets of paper on the floor, to make a diamond shape, like this:

My Phobia-Free Future

Neutral My Mental Blocks.

My Current Situation

30

6. Step onto the paper that says ‘My Current Situation’.

This represents your life as it is right now, before you have got rid of your phobia, with all of your mental blocks still in place.

Ask yourself the following questions – keep a written note of the answers if you like as this will help you to keep track of your progress later.

• How do you feel about your life as a phobia sufferer?

• What emotions do you feel when you think about your phobia?

• What do you see in your mind’s eye? Do any images come into your mind?

• What do you say to yourself in your own mind about your situation now?

• Do you have any negative thoughts about your current situation? What are they?

• What do you think and feel about your own ability to be rid of your phobia?

7. Now, step onto the paper that says ‘Neutral’.

This represents looking at your possible future as an unemotional observer.

Try to think about your goal (i.e. a life free from phobia-suffering) as you would a stranger’s goal – without any emotional investment in whether or not the goal is reached.

From this neutral observer place, imagine that you are watching yourself reach your goal.

• What do you see?

• What do you feel?

31

8. Now step onto the paper that says My Phobia-Free Future.

Imagine that you have finally banished your mental blocks and are now free of your phobia. Imagine how you would feel once you have reached that point, sometime in the future.

• What do you feel?

• What do you hear?

• What thoughts do you have about having banished your fears?

Let yourself really feel the huge sense of freedom and relief that comes with finally busting those blocks and getting the peace of mind that you have wanted for so long.

Make your positive feelings as strong, bright, big and intense as you can manage. Keep adjusting everything about those feelings – what you see, hear and feel – until it is just perfect. It’s not just what you dreamed about…it’s even stronger, brighter, bigger and more intense than you ever thought it could be!

9. Hold this highly positive state and press your thumb and finger together for 5 seconds. This is your “Goal Anchor”. Press this anchor (your thumb and finger together) whenever those mental blocks start to surface again.

10. Now break this state by thinking about something completely different like your garden or what you need to buy when you go grocery shopping.

11. Now, step back onto the paper that says My Current Situation.

• How do you feel in this place now?

• What feelings do you experience?

• What do you see?

• What thoughts do you have about getting rid of your phobia?

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

32

• Do you feel differently now after having pressed your Goal Anchor?

12. Did you discover a block that is stopping you from leaving your phobia behind you?

I f your answer is no, then step back onto the paper that says My Phobia-Free Future and enjoy the feelings of freedom and relief.

If your answer is yes, step onto the paper that says My Mental Blocks.. What emotions or limiting beliefs are standing in your way of losing your phobia?

13. Write down a list of these blocks and / or limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Underline the one that you feel or think is the strongest.

Please create a list of blocks eg.

• I don’t believe my phobia can be cured

• I don’t believe these techniques do work

• I don’t believe I can do it by myself

• I am not worth to be cured from my phobia

• I am afraid to be cured from my phobia

• I am afraid to work at my phobia

• I am not good enough to cure myself

You will use the next exercise to bust these blocks with a powerful technique called EFT which stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. This technique is easy to perform and you can master it very quickly.

It is a combination of traditional and energy healing methods. It could be described as ‘psychological acupressure’ because of its’ use of the ancient Chinese

Block Buster Manual

33

Meridian system used for acupuncture and acupressure. It is one of the most effective, efficient and gentle treatment techniques and best of all; it’s easy to do, safe and brings quick results.

14. Apply EFT as described below while you stand on the paper that says My Blocks.

2. Now - Use EFT to Bust Through Those Blocks! This section uses Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to get rid of those mental blocks which are standing in the way of freedom from your phobia. EFT is very effective in changing thinking patterns and it will clear the way for you to achieve your goals.

1. Think back to the level of intensity level for the block or limiting belief that you discovered in the previous exercise.

To begin with, we need to rate how strong that block is. Give it a score on a scale of 0 – 10 with 0 meaning that it is not strong enough to stand in your way and 10 meaning that you can’t see a way around this block.

2. Your Set-Up Phrase: Using the fingers of one hand, tap on the energy point at the side of your other hand, as pictured below. While you tap your hand with your fingers, say the following phrase out loud:

“Even though I……………………………….. (State your emotion or limiting belief) I deeply and completely accept myself.”

For example:

“Even though I’m frightened to even think about my phobia, I deeply and completely accept myself”.

Repeat this phrase three times out loud while tapping the side of your hand with your fingers. (picture next page)

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

34

3. Your Reminder Phrase: The Reminder Phrase is the block or limiting belief that you used in your Set-Up Phrase.

For example, if your Set-Up Phrase was the one in the example (2.) above, i.e.

“Even though I’m frightened to even think about my phobia, I deeply and completely accept myself.” Then “I’m frightened to even think about my phobia” would be your block, therefore it would also be your Reminder Phrase and you would do the following:

While tapping each energy point about seven times, say “I’m frightened to even think about my phobia” at each energy point.

(This was just an example. Alter “I’m frightened to even think about my phobia” to match your own Set – Up Phrase.)

Next, tap the energy points listed on the next page, in turn, using two fingers while repeating a short Reminder Phrase for each point.

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

35

The Energy points are:

0. Top of the head

1. Inside corner of the eyebrow

2. Outside edge of the eye on the bone of the eye socket.

3. Under the eye on the lower bone of the eye socket.

4. Under the nose.

5. In the crease between your lips and chin.

6. One or two inches to the left or right of the centre of one of your collarbones.

7. Under the arm about four inches below the armpit on the side of the body and on the rib cage.

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

36

4. Now, score your Level of Intensity again from 0 – 10. Is there a difference in the strength of the block / limiting belief? You may find that there is no change in the score number but if you choose a different block, this will mean that you have got rid of the original block / limiting belief and are now ready to move on to a new block to deal with.

5. Your Follow–Up Phrase: If your rating number went down, continue with this exercise:

While tapping the side of your hand, add the word “still” to your Set-Up Phrase and repeat it three times. For example: “Even though I am still frightened to even think about my phobia I deeply and completely accept myself.” Then, tap the points while adding the word “remaining” to your Reminder Phrase. For example: While tapping each point about seen times, say “remaining fear of thinking about my phobia” at each point. 6. If your block / limiting belief has changed, choose an appropriate Set-Up phrase for your new block / limiting belief and repeat the process starting from number 1 above.

If your block / limiting belief has gone, choose another one and repeat the process starting from number 1 above.

Keep repeating this process until all blocks and limiting beliefs that are stopping you getting rid of your phobia are gone.

7. Step onto the paper that says My Current Situation. Is there anything that is stopping you from moving toward your freedom and achieving it now?

If your answer is yes, step onto the paper that says My Mental Blocks once again. Identify the limiting beliefs / emotions and apply the EFT process again.

If your answer is no, step onto the paper that says My Phobia-Free Future and enjoy the feeling of reaching your goal! Congratulations!

Block Buster Manual

Block Buster Manual © J. Heering October 2008 www.CureYourPhobiaInstantly.com V 1.3

37

8. Stop for just a moment. It’s time for a reality check. Answer this question: Is your phobia gone or are the blocks gone?

Think about a situation that would trigger your phobia.

- Does it not scare you anymore? Congratulations!

Or...

- Do you still feel scared?

If so, go ahead and start using the NLP techniques described in the ‘Cure Your Phobia Instantly Manual’ or use the ‘Energy Therapy’ techniques described in the ‘Cure You Phobia Today with Energy Therapy’

Or, if you use EFT to cure your phobia, your setup will be:

“Even though I……………………………….. (State your fear) I deeply and completely accept myself.”

State your fear as specific as possible, addressing all aspects until your fears are gone completely.

Go through the EFT process as described in the previous chapters.

Does it feel good to start from there? Great. Go ahead.

But if you still feel a block, repeat the ‘Block Buster Technique’ for the remaining block.
