Phonics

Please continue to practise your digraphs (sheet attached below). Complete one digraphs task sheet. Choose one at the appropriate level of challenge; mild, medium or hot.

Spelling Task: Revision of spelling words and common words

· Practise your ss, ll and ff words using any strategy. Choose a strategy that works best for you.

A suffix is letters added onto the end of a root word. There are many different suffixes with different purposes e.g. ful = careful, ness = fairness, less = endless, est = longest

We are looking at using the suffix er to change a verb (doing word) into a noun (naming word).

Please see the teaching pages below and complete the task.

Task: Personal Writing

A Time Capsule for May 2020

Task: Create a Time Capsule that shows what life is like at this moment in time- May 2020. (See instruction sheet below).

A time capsule is a collection of things about our life at the moment put in a sealed container. It is then hidden in a safe place or buried in your garden. When it is opened years later you can look back and discover how things have changed.

Use the attached sheets to give you some ideas of what you can put in your Time Capsule. You may wish to tie each sheet up with wool or string to put in your box.

Use all of your skills you have been learning in your writing.

· Different types of font- colour, capital letters, fancy writing

· Descriptive words to describe feelings, objects, songs etc.

· Pictures to illustrate feelings and personal writing

· Neat presentation and eye catching colour

Try to make your Time Capsule as interesting as you can and remember to hide it somewhere safe.

Post a photo of you making or hiding your capsule on Teams if you wish.

Numeracy

Core Learning

Mental Arithmetic

ICT

We are learning to understand a fraction as being part of a whole and read, write and use the term half ( ½ ) and a quarter( ¼ )

We are learning that ½ is equivalent to 2/4

We are learning to find the answers quickly in both addition and subtraction and develop our number skills using our mental strategies.

We are learning to use Word to create a label by typing words and changing some features of the text.

Our Numeracy topic is Fractions. We will be exploring halves and quarters over the next few weeks. The skills we are learning are listed below to help in Home Learning.

· Understand a fraction as being part of a whole

· Show halves and quarters of an object through practical activities at home, shading, cutting etc.

· Read, write and use the terms half and a quarter and their notation ½ and ¼

· Know where fractions lie on a number line

· Write fractions as mixed whole and fractions of a number i.e. 1 ½

Quarters

Explain a whole is made up of 4 equal parts. Cut and demonstrate ¼, ¾, 2/4 etc

Establish 2/4 is equivalent to ½

Watch the video that explains halves and quarters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLxbPQRIyjw

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z3rbg82- TRY THE QUIZ

Practise making quarters at home e.g. cut a sandwich etc. Share out colouring pens etc. between 4 and find a ¼

Use your book SHM2 Money and Fractions and complete the pages listed.

1. Finding a quarter page 14

2. Match the fraction by shading

3. Finding a quarter. Try sharing a quarter of an amount with pasta, smarties, fruit etc.

4. Dice Game

5. Finding a Whole and a Quarter

6. Establish that 2/4 is the same ( equivalent) to 1/2

Continue to practise number skills on Funky Mummy.

http://www.ictgames.com/funkyMummy/index.html

Please leave out Times Tables.

Sumdog

Continue to practise Sumdog and complete the Challenge - Number Skills and Fractions

Remember to keep working on the South Ayrshire Maths Contest until the 21st of May. Good Luck!

Practise doubles and halves of numbers orally.

A Label for my Time Capsule

Make a label for your Time Capsule on Word. Use the skills we have learned in class and choose different fonts, change the size and colour and insert a picture.

Remember the following:

· a title

· the date Hidden

· ‘Do not open until the end of 2020’ instruction.

Science – Houses and Homes

Health and Wellbeing

We are learning about types of materials and their textures

We are learning to follow the Green Cross Code and road safety to keep us safe.

In our Science we are looking at different types of materials and their properties e.g. rough, smooth, waterproof etc. natural and man-made materials and solids and liquids. We look forward to lots of fun investigations this term.

Materials

Task

Look around your home and discuss the types of materials used to build it.

Can you find any other types of materials and their uses?

Watch the clip from BBC Bitesize and discuss the different materials you see and what they have been used for.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zm2jmp3

Complete the task sheet and record some of the materials you found. Take some rubbings using a thick crayon of some materials you found outside.

Waterproof Materials

A waterproof material is a material that keeps us dry.

Marissa the Mermaid needs your help.

Please can you help her by completing the waterproof

experiment to find some materials that are waterproof.

Record your results.

Physical Exercise

Joe Wicks for kids on You Tube

Popcorn Game from Mrs Macdonald see attached sheet last week.

Keep a record of your daily fitness.

Yoga

There are many poses in Yoga. Have fun trying some and learning the names of some of them

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho9uttOZdOQ

Remember to start your day with your Sun Salutation you learned last week.

Road Safety

Discuss the Green Cross Code. Visit the Ziggy website below and play Green Cross Code Phrase and Green Cross Code Words.

Spelling Chilli Challenge - Dictation

Dictation is an activity used during consolidation week as a further test of pupils’ knowledge of their spelling words. This allows them to transfer their knowledge to the context of writing.

Read out the sentences to your child but do not let them see them. They should write the sentence into their jotter ensuring they use a capital letter and full stop in the correct place. Read the sentence as many times as necessary. Only correct the spelling words that they are being assessed on: ignore any other wrongly spelled words. Within each sentence, let your child know the spelling words that they are being assessed on so that they can check them.

Mild (Red Group)

Medium (Orange Group)

Hot (Green Group)

1. The girl gave her doll a kiss when she left her room.

2. My brother was in a huff because I got a grass stain on his shirt cuff.

3. In my class, we get lots of words to spell and I always do well.

Give a score out of 9.

1. The yellow giraffe liked to eat the long, stiff grass.

2. I am doing a lesson with my class where I will learn to spell very well.

Give a score out of 14.

Complete this if you don’t have your textbook.

Finding a Quarter

Remember that you are sharing amongst four. Use materials to help you.

Try this game to help with your quarters.

Bloom’s Buttons – Creating

Bloom’s Buttons – Remembering

Suffixes – er

A suffix is letters added to the end of a root (main) word. We are looking at adding the suffix er to the end of a verb (doing word) to change it to a noun (naming word).

I like to sing. I am a singer.

I am going to drive the bus. I am a driver.

She is going to run in the race. She is a runner.

Mr Wilson will go to school to teach his class. He is a teacher.

All groups look at, discuss and complete this page. Then choose one additional task from below.

Mild

Medium

Choose 4 of the nouns you have made (the words with er) and put them in sentences of your own. Complete your sentences in your jotter.

Hot (2 pages)

Hot

Now choose a verb and noun pair and show how they can be used in the same sentence.

Example:

My gran is great at baking cakes because she is a professional baker.

When we play rounders, I have to catch the ball because I am one of the catchers.

Complete 4 sentences of your own. Underline the verb and noun in each sentence.
