MATCH UP: After only their third season in the conference, this will be the

Lakers’ fi rst trip to the PSAC Championship. Th e Huskies have not been to

the title game since its revival in 2008. Prior to the elimination of the game in

1987, Bloomsburg last participated when it defeated IUP, 31-9, in 1985. Th is

year’s edition carries signifi cant playoff signifi cance, as a win by either team

could seal not only a berth in the NCAA Championship, but a fi rst-round bye

as well.

THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester ‘68) is

in his 18th year at the helm of the Bloomsburg program. Having achieved

his 150th win this season against Shippensburg, Hale has a 153-50-1 (.752)

record and the most wins in school history. For his career, Hale is 193-63-1

and his winning percentage of .753 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches

in Division II and top 20 D-II coaches all-time. Hale has led BU to six playoff

appearances, including the latest in 2008. He has been honored as the PSAC

East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine

times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the

2000 season.

Marty Schaetzle (Bucknell ‘83) is concluding his ninth-year at the helm of

the Mercyhurst football program. During his tenure, Schaetzle has a 39-57

(.406)overall record, including a 20-44 (.312) mark while his Lakers were in

the GLIAC and a 19-13 (.594) ledger since. Prior to his arrival at Mercyhurst,

Schaetzle was an assistant at the Patriot League’s Bucknell University.

PSAC EAST: With divisional play in the books, the season concludes with

the fi nal PSAC crossover week. Bloomsburg’s originally-scheduled opponent

(Lock Haven) will host that of Mercyhurst (Shippensburg).

September 12, 2009

ERIE-Quarterback Dan Latorre rushed for one score and passed for another to lead fi fth-ranked Bloomsburg University to a 17-7 win over Mercyhurst College. After a scoreless opening period, the Huskies struck fi rst on a career-best 47-yard fi eld goal from Jon Koenig with two minutes left in the half. Th e senior’s kick capped an eight-play, 46-yard for the Huskies that included a 20-yard run from Kenny Domzalski and an 18-yard pass from Latorre to Ben Weaber. On the ensuing drive, Mercyhurst quarterback Joe Laff ey had a pass intercepted by Bloomsburg linebacker Anthony Smith, who returned the ball to the Laker 23-yard line. Th e Huskies drove to the Mercyhurst one-yard line, which set up a TD run from Latorre to make it 10-0 at the break. Bloomsburg made it 17-0 early in the fourth period when Cory Stiger caught a four-yard scoring pass from Latorre to cap a 44-yard scoring drive. Th e big play in the drive was a 41-yard reception by Chris Tressler putting the Huskies in scoring position. Mercyhurst got on the board in the fourth period when Laff ey completed a one-yard pass to Josh Szeluga with 6:08 to go. Th e Lakers would get the ball back two more times in the fi nal six minutes, but the Bloomsburg defense stopped the Lakers on both occasions. On a fourth and two, the Huskies’ Th omas McFarland made a stop for a loss of two yards to turn the ball over on downs, while Domenique Price intercepted a pass on Mercyhurst’s last drive to seal the victory. Domzalski rushed for a game-high 86 yards and surpassed 1,000 yards for his career. Latorre fi nished 12-24 for 112 yards and one score. Defensively, Smith had a BU-high 11 tackles and one interception. As a team, Bloomsburg gave up just one touchdown for the third straight game and allowed just 192 yards of total off ense. Mercyhurst quarterback Joe Laff ey was 19-36 for 130 yards and one interception.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Franklyn Quiteh earned his fourth PSAC East

Off ensive Player of the Week honor of the season after running for 194 yards on

just 22 carries (8.8 ypc) and four touchdowns to help the Huskies to a 61-35 win

over previously undefeated Kutztown to wrap up the PSAC East title. Th e 194

rushing yards is only his fourth most of the season.

Vince Browning received PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week honors after

making fi ve tackles and two key interceptions to help lead Bloomsburg to the win.

He also broke up an additional pass. Th e Huskies scored 10 points off of the junior’s

turnovers.

SCOUTING MERCYHURST: Mercyhurst’s off ense is one of the most balanced in

the conference, with the Lakers’ currently ranked seventh in the PSAC in rushing

(150.0 yards/game) and eighth in passing (196.2 yards/game). While its off ensive

numbers may not seem impressive, the team has demonstrated a defensive prowess

that has championship potential. Mercyhurst has held its opponents to 162.6

passing yards/game (3rd in PSAC) and a mere 89.1 yards rushing (2nd in PSAC).

Individually, the Lakers are led by Travis Rearick, who has thrown for 1,275 yards

and 15 touchdowns on the year, while only giving up 6 interceptions. Having only

played in seven of ten games, Rearick has not qualifi ed for the NCAA charts, but

would otherwise be the 45th-best passer in D-II and 8th in the PSAC by effi ciency.

Gerald Anderson is averaging well over 100 yards rushing per game and has the

15th-most yards per game in the Division. Joining him on the off ensive front,

Trevor Kennedy and Terrance Coon have become two of the conference’s most

prolifi c receivers.

Defensively, Bryan Boyce is ranked among the conference’s top 15 players in

tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks. Dan Kruper, Tim Herbener, and Fred Hale round

out the Lakers’ defensive statistical leaders.

On special teams, Mercyhurst is statistically the conference leader in punt returns,

but the success does not translate to the team’s kickoff returns. Th e Lakers’ are

among the league’s bottom fi ve in net punting, which means the battle over fi eld

position may fi nd the Huskies with a decided advantage.

*Poll as of 11/8/10

RECORD PASSING STREAK: Junior Pat Carey has now thrown at least two

touchdown passes in each of the last nine games. No other Bloomsburg quarterback

has strung together as many multiple-touchdown games. Eric Miller had seven

straight games in 2000. Th e BU record for at least one touchdown pass in consecutive

games in the regular season record is 16: by Glen McNamee for the last nine in 1994

and fi rst seven in 1995; and Miller for the last 5 in 1999 and all 11 in 2000. Including

the playoff s that season, Miller reached 20.

AMONG THE RANKS: Bloomsburg moved up to No. 11 in Division II according to

the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. In last week’s

D2Football.com media poll, the Huskies were slotted in the No. 14 position.

LEADING THE NATION: For the eighth week this season and seventh straight,

Franklyn Quiteh sits currently atop the Division II rushing leaderboard. His average

of 163.8 yards per game is now 10 yards per game more than runner-up Phil Milbrath

of Michigan Tech (153.2). Across all divisions, Quiteh has racked up the most yards

rushing (1,638) and was the fi rst runner to reach the 1,000-yard mark this season.

STIFLING THE OPPONENT: In nine games, Bloomsburg has held its opponents

to fewer than 20 yards on 76 of 131 (58%) of their total drives. On 29 of those drives

(22% of the total), the Huskies forced a punt after only three plays. In its last game

against Kutztown, Bloomsburg held the Golden Bears under 20 yards on seven of 13

drives, including two in which the Huskies forced a turnover on the fi rst play.

THROWING THE BOMB: Th e Huskies have thrown six passes of 50+ yardage

this season. Pat Carey connected on four touchdowns from the Bloomsburg side

of midfi eld: 66 yards (Clarion) and 65 yards (Kutztown) to Cory Stiger, 68 yards

(Indiana) and 62 yards (Cheyney) to Kyle Fisher, and 52 yards (Shippensburg) to

Chris Tressler. On BU’s other long pass, tight end Ben Weaber hurled 53 yards to

Fisher on a trick play that ended on the West Chester three-yard line.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

By Bloomsburg University Archivist Bob Dunkelberger

Th e 61 points versus Kutztown are the most the Huskies have ever scored on the

Golden Bears, bettering the 49 in 2007. Th e 96 total points are the most ever in

the 64 games in the series and fourth most for a Danny Hale coached Bloomsburg

team. Th e last time this many combined points were scored in a Husky game was

97 in the 63-34 loss to Delta State in the 2000 National Championship. Th e most

was 106 the week prior versus U.C. Davis (58-48 Bloomsburg), and 100 was the

highest total in a home game--58-42 in the 1996 fi nale versus East Stroudsburg.

Th e 449 rushing yards was the second highest total for a Bloomsburg team since

1999, bettered only by the 541 versus Cheyney in 2004.

Th e Huskies recorded the seventh undefeated regular season home record under

Danny Hale while scoring 220 points, an average of 44 per game. Th e only better

seasons in terms of points in the 37-year history of Redman Stadium are all under

Coach Hale: 1996 (317), 2004 (230), 1999 (229), and 2007 (221); and average

points 1996 (52.8), 2004 (46.0), and 2007 (44.2).

BREAKING LOOSE: Bloomsburg has recorded 22 rushes for 20 yards or more this season, seven of which ended in touchdowns.

Franklyn Quiteh is responsible for all but one of these long scoring runs, as he found the endzone from 45 and 68 yards against

Clarion, from 25 yards against Millersville, from 23 yards against Cheyney, from 37 yards against West Chester, and from 25

yards against Kutztown. Codie Butler had a 62-yard run end on the one-yard line versus Kutztown but later got a second chance

and escaped downfi eld for a 63-yard touchdown, one of his two in the game.

EXTENDING THE RECORD: Currently the nation’s leader in fi eld goals per game, redshirt freshman Daniel Fisher is now

in exclusive possession of the Bloomsburg single-season record for fi eld goals completed. Th e previous record was set in 1986

when Chris Mingrone was successful on 10 of his 20 attempts. On October 30, Fisher also broke the BU single-game record,

which stood at three entering the season. His average of 1.90 fi eld goals per game is tied for fi rst in all of NCAA Division II.

#13 BLOOMSBURG 61 - #15 KUTZTOWN 35November 6, 2010

BLOOMSBURG-Bloomsburg’s Franklyn Quiteh, ran for 194 yards and four touch-downs, as the Bloomsburg University Huskies defeated previously-unbeaten Kutztown University by a score of 61-35 to clinch the 2010 PSAC Eastern Division crown. Behind Quiteh, backup running back Codie Butler also had a stellar day. On the Huskies’ fi rst drive, Butler broke out for a 62-yard run before being brought down on the one-yard line. Butler got to fi nish what he started and ran in the fi nal yard on the next play, putting Bloomsburg up 7-0 just over a minute into the game. With the conference’s highest scoring average and top passer in quarterback Kevin Morton, Kutztown surprised no one in responding quickly. Morton capped off a nine-play, 72-yard drive with a one-yard keeper rush to even the score at 7-7. Bloomsburg took over and Quiteh got his fi rst big run of the game, scoring from 25 yards away. A missed PAT left the Huskies ahead 13-7 with fi ve minutes to play in the fi rst. Th e Huskies forced a punt on the ensuing possession and began a march down the fi eld from their own 13. Twelve plays later, Daniel Fisher completed a 30-yard fi eld goal attempt, and Bloomsburg led 16-7. Soon thereafter, three-time PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week Mike Varanavage came up with his third interception of the year. Starting from the Kutz-town 15, the Bloomsburg rushers had no trouble rushing the ball into the endzone, as Quiteh capped the short drive from four yards for a 23-7 advantage. Bloomsburg’s Oscar Rivera had another interception on Kutztown’s next drive, but Fisher was unable to get enough distance on a 52-yard downwind fi eld goal at-tempt. A Golden Bears’ punt gave way to a fi ve-play, 73-yard drive by BU that included Quiteh’s longest run of the day (58 yards) and a 10-yard Pat Carey touchdown toss to Ben Weaber, giving the Huskies a 30-7 lead at the break. Th e third quarter was a memorable one—a shootout dual that featured more scoring and exciting plays than a typical complete game. Kutztown came out of the in-termission fi ring, as seven straight passing plays yielded a fi ve-yard score from Morton to freshman receiver Josh Smith. Next, Bloomsburg responded with a 65-yard bomb from Carey to Cory Stiger. Kutztown answered with a 44-yard pass completion from Morton to Chris Mc-Cormick. BU slowed down the pace by taking 90 seconds off the clock on its next drive, which ended with Quiteh getting into the endzone for the third time from 13 yards. Kutztown converted on a pair of third-down conversions on the succeeding drive, and Morton connected with McCormick again from four yards. Halfway through the period, fi ve touchdowns had been recorded, and the score had infl ated to 44-28. Quiteh committed the Huskies’ only turnover of the game on the fi rst play of the next drive. Looking to capitalize on fi eld position, Morton went to the endzone on his fi rst play but connected with Bloomsburg’s Vince Browning. BU’s Butler broke out for a game-high 63-yard run, this time avoiding being caught before getting across the goal line, putting his team up 51-28. Kutztown’s passing game was no match for the Husky defense, as Morton’s next throw was picked off by Browning again. Bloomsburg weaned nearly six minutes off the clock to end the third quarter, and early in the fourth, Fisher connected on his second goal of the day, extending his school-record to 19 on the season, this time (coincidentally) from 19 yards. Trailing by 26, but not ready to quit, Morton worked the ball 69-yards down the fi eld and scored on a keeper from one yard to narrow the gap to 54-35. With two TD’s on the ground and three by air, Morton’s fi ve-touchdown performance was notewor-thy even for a defeated quarterback. Bloomsburg’s running game won the day on the next drive, stealing more than nine minutes off the scoreboard. Quiteh scored the fi nal touchdown of the day from 15 yards, sealing the 61-35 win. Butler surpassed the 100-yard mark for the second time in his career, logging a personal-best 177 yards on the ground.
