This video directed by Diane Martel is fairly simplistic. It appears the whole thing was shot in one location. This is similar to the idea we have of shooting many different shots of our models in the same location. In a way this makes a video more interesting as well as displays artistic ability, as you are restricted to a one space you must recreate it. This is just one example to the many close ups in this video. I find these to be the best type of shot, as it allows the audience to properly see the faces of the characters. This often makes it easier for an audience to identify with who’s on screen, as emotions are clearly shown in their facial expressions.

The close up will be a very useful shot in our music video as there is or are strong messages within it, being able to empathise with who/what is on screen can prove to be beneficial when communicating detailed ideas with an audience.

Props are also very important in a music video as they are able to make a shot more interesting and fun.

Here it could have easily just been a mid shot of a pretty girl with a surprised facial expression, but adding a toy car rolling down her back makes it more appealing and gets the audience wondering about its significance. It could be to show off her body line or it could be symbol for a deeper meaning such as rich/people in power often ‘drive’ all over those inferior to them in order to maintain power.

Due to this effect it would be a very useful to use props in our video, as it is a more stimulating way to convey meaning.

Costume is also an important factor for a music video as you are able to tell who or what type person someone is through their clothes.

Videos tend to have any extra personnel who is not the star in different costumes and often extras are dressed the same or similar. This helps the audience to distinguish the star in the video. However in videos where there is no star/performance element costumes can be used to show the different positions between characters, or a symbol maybe for economic statuses.

We have already thought about costumes to show the difference between two worlds. Again it is a more exciting way to show these dissimilarities to an audience.
