Bangalow Music Festival 2013

TRANSCRIPT

16-18 AUGUST

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR LAUREATE – PAUL DEANIt’s a wonderful thing for me to see the Bangalow Music Festival standing strong all these years later since I established it way back in 2002. It goes to show that partnering outstanding music with magnificent surroundings is a simple combination that never grows old. Over the years we have welcomed some of our best musical friends to perform in A&I Hall and have shared countless performance memories with them on its small but vibrant stage. What is equally special are the local non-musical friends we’ve made over the past 12 years since the festival’s inception and this, for me, symbolises the strong sense of community which keeps the festival alive. There are some great highlights this year including the world premiere of my very own work to be performed by the Bangalow Festival Chamber Orchestra – I hope you enjoy it. My very best wishes to the 2013 festival team and musicians and I look forward to seeing you there!

BANGALOW LOGISTICS COORDINATOR – MARGARET CURTISIt is with great pleasure that I am again involved with the 2013 Bangalow Music Festival. This year will prove to be one of our best with the exciting line up of performers provided by Southern Cross Soloists. Of course, the Bangalow Chamber of Commerce and the township of Bangalow will support the event this year with its range of great food and services to visiting musicians and those attending the concerts. We have a great team of volunteers to support the Festival and welcome both locals and visitors to this year’s Festival. I wish all the musicians and Southern Cross Soloists the best for the Bangalow Music Festival 2013.

FESTIVAL PATRON – DON PAGE – MP, MEMBER FOR BALLINAThe Bangalow Music Festival has become an immensely popular event on the annual festival calendar. It attracts world class classical musicians who come to play in the picturesque setting of Bangalow. The event is a great credit to the organisers, performers and the people of Bangalow who so strongly support the event each year. Thanks once again to Paul Dean, Tania Frazer, Southern Cross Soloists, visiting musicians, the Bangalow Chamber of Commerce and all of the organisers who work tirelessly to make the event run smoothly. I hope everyone enjoys this year’s Bangalow Music Festival. I’m sure it will be another wonderful event.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR TANIA FRAZERWelcome to the Bangalow Music Festival August 16-18, 2013.

Once again the gorgeous township of Bangalow will be transformed into a musical mecca as we introduce an exceptionally starry cluster of soloists this year. Featuring the finest international and Australian ensembles and soloists, 2013 continues to deliver exciting programs and top-drawer music making.

We will be presenting the new generation of solo sensations from around the globe; performers who are jumping the queue and taking the world by storm with their consummate artistry: Jayson Gillham piano (Aus/UK), Silver-Garburg Piano Duo (Israel/Germany), Alexander Lewis tenor (Aus/USA), Qian Zhou violin (China/Singapore), Felicitas Fuchs soprano (Germany), plus established stars Emma Sholl flute (Sydney), Bernard Lanskey piano/philosophy (Aus/UK/Singapore), our very own Southern Cross Soloists and the fab four from Melbourne – the Flinders String Quartet.

Some unusual highlights include a surprise event during the champagne launch and a new lecture style discovery concert exploring the science behind our own human reactions to hearing music.

Join us for a weekend of extraordinary music making in the captivating setting of northern New South Wales where you will be treated to an exclusive preview of the latest and greatest in the classical music world. See you there.

Tania Frazer

FEATURED ARTISTS

Jayson Gillham Piano (Australia/London)

Based in London, Jayson was recently named Commonwealth Musician of the Year and was awarded the gold medal by the Royal Overseas League in London. This award was previously won by Piers Lane, Geoffrey Parsons and Geoffrey Tozer—the elite of Australian Pianists. Recent concert tours include Italy, Germany, Singapore, China, Great Britain and Australia, and in 2013 Jayson will be performing extensively in the USA.

Silver-Garburg Piano Duo (Israel/Germany)

Undisputedly one of world’s greatest piano duos, the Silver-Garburg’s performances are a delicious blend of velvet touch, sweet brilliance and poetic body language. As a duo they show consummate perfection of two artists working as one and their intuitive connection with each other is breathtaking to behold. Their international concert schedule takes them regularly to Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre, Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Musikverien, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Munich, Moscow, Helsinki, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada and South America. They record for OehmsClassics.

Alexander Lewis Tenor (Australia/New York)

Our man at the Met!

Originally from Perth, leading international tenor soloist Alexander Lewis resides in New York and is a Young Artist at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Mentored by James Levine and Placido Domingo, Alexander will be performing his first lead role as a full member of the Metropolitan Opera in 2014.

Hear him at Bangalow as he begins to grace the world’s opera stages.

Qian Zhou Violin (China/Singapore)

Violin virtuoso Qian Zhou is one of the leading violinists of her generation. After early guidance by Isaac Stern in China, Qian went on to be the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Marguerite Long/Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris and broke the record books by winning all five major prizes. Since then, her career has catapulted forward and she regularly performs in the major concert halls of Europe, America and Asia.

A Naxos artist, Qian has recorded seven CDs for the label, described by Strad magazine as: “impeccable… burnished with beautifully-focused tone… her phrasing is breath-taking; not a note is 'wasted' or ignored, all delivered with a rare nobility of spirit… extraordinary: full-blooded, suave and sophisticated, thoughtful."

Felicitas Fuchs Soprano (Germany)

Taught by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Ian Kennedy and Kurt Widmer, Felicitas Fuchs won first prize at the prestigious Bavarian Radio ‘La Voce’ competition. Since then her career has been a whirlwind of performances in Paris, Munich, Frankfurt, London, Zurich, St Petersburg and many other major centres. A versatile artist, Felicitas performs both opera and concert repertoire, spanning from baroque, classical and romantic to modern day. A favourite of leading composers, Felicitas has performed many world premieres of new works written especially for her and has many acclaimed CD recordings.

Emma Sholl Flute

Emma Sholl is regarded as one of Australia’s finest flautists. Described as having a “gorgeous honeyed tone” (Sydney Morning Herald), Emma has led a successful and varied career as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. Associate Principal Flute with the Sydney Symphony, Emma has worked with some of the world’s finest conductors, touring throughout Europe and Asia. In demand as a chamber musician and soloist, Emma has performed in many festivals and as a soloist with the Adelaide, Tasmanian and Sydney Symphony Orchestras.

FEATURED ARTISTS

Bernard Lanskey Piano/lecturer

As a pianist, he has performed throughout Australia, Great Britain, South-East Asia and Europe chamber music, mixed recital and lecture-recital combinations.

Flinders Quartet

Capturing the imagination of audiences for over ten years the Flinders Quartet was described in The Age to have “full-blooded enthusiasm, a fine ear for lyrical content and an unfailing unanimity of intent.” As one of Australia’s leading string quartets they have performed at all the major Australian music festivals, throughout Europe and the quartet regularly performs at the Melbourne Recital Centre and Sydney’s Angel Place.

Southern Cross Soloists

Southern Cross Soloists are one of Australia’s most successful and widely respected chamber ensembles and have established an international reputation for ground-breaking performance along the way.
