Dear S.P.E.S Families,

The end of the year is around the corner! We are in our last full month before our big

summer break! Before we hit the beaches and grab our sunglasses, we have a busy month

ahead of us.

Our third, fourth, and fifth graders are taking the PARCC Assessments and we have the

Art Show, Spring Fair, and Musical in just a few weeks. As you can imagine, child excitement and

energy is high! It is important in this last quarter that students are able to stay focused, be kind,

and continue sharing a positive attitude with others - as they have done all year!

Our teachers are working hard to create engaging instruction that help students to

remember the “why.” They continue to set up field trips, guest speakers, and projects that bring in

an authentic audience. Bare Books are a great example of this work and it is amazing to see this

tradition at SPES come alive through the eyes of our children.

Throughout these next few weeks, please join us in re-focusing our children’s energy.

There is still much to learn and completing quality work during this final stretch is so important.

Please remind your child(ren) that this is the quarter where everything comes together,

and we get to see how much growth they have made in one school year!

I hope to see you at the upcoming events!

Sincerely,

Lorie Barnes

Hello, I’m Mrs. Katie McCord, SPES School Counselor

SPES’ character trait for May is RESPECT. Since this is the foundation of

REACH and many of the other positive behaviors, we thought it would be a great

emphasis during the last full month of the school year. We will focus on respect

for others, self, the environment and property during morning meetings, break

times, morning announcements, and throughout the day. Students will write a

respectful action on a flower we will add to our character trees. Please support

our character trait at home by sharing, modeling and recognizing respectful

behavior.

College Days in May – During the month of May, I am inviting parents to share

positive aspects of their college experiences during my guidance lesson times.

Students are usually very interested and inspired when they learn how the

college experience is related to the world of work. Look for a note to come home

this week with the guidance time for your child(ren)s class. The staff will

decorate college pennants and share stories of our experiences. We will also

have college apparel day for staff and kids every Monday in May.

April Guidance Lesson Topics: Kindergarten -5th : Respect and College

Awareness.

Parent Conversation: A Talk in the Park is a monthly conversation for Severna Park parents of kids of any age to share about topics that impact our youth and community. They meet every 2

nd Thursday of the month at 7:15 pm at the

Severna Park Community Center. On May 9th they will discuss the survey

results of SP Middle School students and their thoughts on homework, schoolwork, extra-curriculars, stress, sleep, and support resources. Sponsored by Parenting for a Different World.

Volunteering at S.P.E.S

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to support our students and staff. Our

children greatly benefit from your hard work and dedication. We hope to see you again this fall and

we welcome new families to join! Our volunteers assist on field trips, reading programs, after school

activities, gardening, and more! In accordance with AACPS policies, all volunteers must complete a

training video, which is available at aacps.org. Depending on the assignment, consistent

volunteers must complete a background check and all volunteers participate in an orientation

meeting held by our Volunteer Coordinator and Reading Specialist, Lori Bortner. The process can

take up to three weeks depending on the volume of applications, so please start the process early.

We appreciate your commitment to our children’s safety and completing all necessary paperwork

prior to volunteering. If you have any questions, please call the main office.

BIRTHDAYS

Remember that we do not allow food items as birthday treats

for a variety of health and safety reasons.

Students can bring a very small birthday share (stickers, pen-

cils, mini-erasers) rather than a food based treat IF they would

like too (it is certainly not mandatory). All treats are completely

voluntary.

(We will continue to have birth-

day pencils in the office and

the PTA will continue

the ‘birthday books’ program

again this year.)

ABSENCE NOTES

Please make sure all absence notes include:

Student’s Legal Name,

Homeroom Teacher’s Name

Date and Reason for Absence.

Absence notes must be turned in within 3 days of returning to school.

You can send in a hand written note or an email to the homeroom teacher and [email protected].

Thank You!!

DISMISSAL Any changes to your child’s normal dismissal method must be

made IN ADVANCE IN WRITING!! Student can bring a note

to the homeroom teacher or an email can be sent to the

homeroom teacher and both secretaries, [email protected]

and [email protected].

If your child will be a car rider, please come and get a sign for

EVERY car that will pick up your

child at the end of the day! They

are free and will help us with the

flow of traffic! LAST NAME
