Technology Tips for Parents

US News and World Report ran an article to provide parents with some helpful tips about

technology. “Learning the ins and outs of the latest technology is a lot like learning to swim

or ride a bike: The younger you are, the more naturally it comes.” This can be challenging for

parents who already feel behind their children when it comes to technology.

While assisting with school work can be difficult, parents now need to help their children

solve math problems on iPad apps or on websites like MobiMax and IXL. As Edgewater

Public continues to shift toward online platforms, we want to provide you with some tips to

help. Keeping up with the digital pace is simple like starting a conversation.

Here are four quick tips to keep up with your child's technology, while also keeping your

family safe.

1. Show and tell: If your child is using a device, program, or website you aren't familiar

with, have them show you how it works. Children love to be the teacher to their parent.

2. Google it: It's a simple but often overlooked step to Internet safety. Get online. Google

your child's name. Google your family name. See what's out there. Students—and their

parents—need to be aware that what they post on the Internet is permanent, and poor online

decisions can have significant consequences.

3. Keep tech public: If your children's computers are in their bedrooms, you should move

them. What your children are doing on the computer should be public as well. Parents should

"friend" their students on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, and know who their online

friends are. Parents should also check the browser history so they know what sites their

children are visiting.

4. Get excited: Computers, tablets, and smartphones bring students out of their shells and

open up exciting new avenues for learning. It encourages communication. Get in there and

learn with your students on new devices.

These simple easy tips can help as you seek to support your students in changes times.

Remember, your involvement is the key to your student’s success.

Extended Day News! Extended Day has welcomed another new group leader! Sierra Dollar has joined our staff. Sierra

is a full time college student and we are thrilled to have her with us. She is also Ms. Boden's

daughter!

Our third, fourth, and fifth graders have started working on "Success Maker" Monday through Friday in the

computer lab!

Our wonderful and talented music teacher, Ms. Reid, has asked our extended day students to participate in her

holiday program! They have been practicing every afternoon. I'm sure it will be a great show!

Notes from the South Forty – Agri-Science

Hello Bobcat Supporters! With the arrival of fall, the Agri-Science students are starting to

learn about the livestock and plants related to farming, as well as the creatures and critters

that surround farms. We will cover plants and animals, then go into birds in December.

Our big project for December will be to make pinecone bird feeders in all 3rd, 4th, and 5th

grade classes. When these feeders are sent home, they will come with ties attached so

they are easy to place in a tree, on a fence, or other location where your family can enjoy

them during the holiday break. We will be needing lard (no artificial shortening please),

peanut and other nut butters, and bird seed to complete this project. Quart bags also would

be a great. Your help is appreciated.

Our studies of “For the Birds!” in December will culminate with a bird count during the winter

break. We are working to coordinate with the local Audubon crew to

help with the 2015-2016 116th Annual Christmas Bird Count. We will

need parents who are approved volunteers to assist with this

program. Our campus will also conduct the Annual Backyard Bird

Count specific to campus in February while we are studying

conversation.

Our first hydroponic containers have been planted by the 3rd

graders, who are growing

several varieties of lettuce and spinach. Watch for salad coming your way soon! That said,

we are still in great need of empty plastic ground coffee containers, 2 L and 3 L soda

bottles, clear heavy weight visqueen sheeting, and non-treated 4x4 lumber. If you have

extra small aquarium or fountain pumps, aquarium tubing, or clean wet stones, they are

also needed for the deep water hydroponic units, as well as food grade buckets and lids.

Thank you to all who have given materials, funds, and encouragement to our new

programs. We hope the best for a safe holiday season for you all.

FFEA NEWS!!!!

FFEA Club has begun and is already ready to help around their school and community. They

volunteered their time at the Thanksgiving Feast clearing tables, serving drinks and helping

families if needed. Club members also chose their officers. Congrats to President Hannah Zona,

Vice President Michael Henderson, and Secretary Tatum Diaz. December will be even busier

with walking in the Edgewater Parade, helping teachers in the classrooms, and collecting items

for the Edgewater Animal Shelter so the animals we love so much can have a happy holiday as

well (see flyer below with information about donating).

There is still room for more members, so if any 4th or 5th graders want to join, please see Mrs.

Kelly or Mrs. Mowrey.

‘Tis the Season For Giving

As the holiday season is upon us, FFEA is collecting items for our community cats and dogs at the

Edgewater Animal Shelter. We are calling this the “Teacher’s Pet Project”. If our Edgewater Bobcat

family could please donate one item below, many of our future pets will too have a happy holiday.

For Dogs: Pedigree adult/puppy dry/wet food, treats of any kind, rawhide

chews For Kitties:Purina wet/dry cat/kitten food and cat litter

General: Baking Soda, paper towels, black trash bags, bleach, laundry soap,

dish washer detergent, dish soap, cat/dog beds, toys of any kind,

metal food/water bowls

*All items need to be turned in by December 15th to their classroom teacher or the front office.

Did you know you can find Box Tops on many of the brands you

use to make Thanksgiving dinner, from potatoes to crescent

rolls? Remember to clip those Box Tops and turn them in to

school. They really add up! Thanksgiving is also a great time to

collect extra Box Tops from family and friends as you gather for

Looking for an activity for your child to participate in? Flyers announcing events and programs sponsored by

community organizations are now available on the district’s website at http://myvolusiaschools.org Simply select

“Parents” icon and locate Tool box on right-hand bottom corner, then click Flyers. New flyers will be posted on the

1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. Be sure to check back frequently for events and activities occurring

throughout Volusia County.

Don’t have computer access at home? A computer is available for your use in the (where ever you designate: media

center/front office) and at every Volusia County Public Library.

Yearbooks are on sale NOW! If you would like to pre-order your yearbook,

you may stop by the front office at any time to purchase. They are

only $6.00 per yearbook- the best deal we have had so far!

If you have pictures you would like to see in the yearbook, simply email them
