From the Gardens: Putting Your Garden To Bed

As this is written, at the end of September, the nights have gotten much cooler, signaling Autumn. So we asked Horticulturalist Mary Braunreiter to give us her top three tips for putting a garden to bed.

1) Leave some of your perennials uncut for winter interest

“Especially keep up anything that is a source of food for birds or other winter visitors. Also, think about how something would look with snow on it. That may be a plant you want to leave uncut as well.”

2) Don’t cut back sub-shrubs“These are the slightly woody perennials like Russian Sage or roses. Sub-shrubs experience die-back every winter. If you cut them to the ground, then the die-back will start at that point. Rather keep sub-shrubs uncut so the die-back happens further up the stems. In spring, look to where you see the plant budding again and cut back only to there.”

3) Mulch“Be especially careful with the perennials you planted this year. They have had only one season to put down roots and will need some extra protection this winter.” Mary likes evergreen branches best for mulching as they are easy to clean-up in spring. She warns, however, “don’t put the boughs down until Thanksgiving or so, when the ground has had a chance to freeze. Putting the evergreens down earlier will only encourage critters to make their homes under the branches.” When asked where to get evergreen branches, Mary says to look at your local garden center. She gets hers from a local (non-chain) nursery in big bundles meant just for this purpose.

Winter can be a diffi cult season for a gardener. Armed with these winterizing tips, perhaps we can all have a more successful spring.
