The name BOLLYWOOD inspired by TOLLYWOOD the

name that was used to refer to the cinema of WestBengal.

In 1932 TOLLYWOOD was the earliest HOLLYWOODinspired name because the Bengali Film Industry wasbased on Tollygunge.

Indian Cinema has passed through 11 decades ofentertainment, songs, love in the rain, exotic locations,mere paas maa hai, on screen kissing and much more.The growth in the terms of impact and quality has beentremendous in the last 110 years. Cinema has nowbecome an inevitable part of the Indian culture andsociety, which a SRK or a BIG B wannabe in every nookand corner of this great country.

CONTRIBUTION TO INDIAN CINEMA

First Indian film was made in 1899 by Calcutta basedMr. Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar. He, usinga projection apparatus and an imported Britishcamera made two short films namely : The Wrestlersand Man and Monkey.

The first indigenous full-length feature film was madeby Dundiraj Govinda Phalke, who is better known asDada Saheb Phalke. The film was titled RajaHarishchandra and was released on May 3, 1914 atthe coronation theatre, Bombay. The film ran for 23

days. Phalkes Lanka Dahan, which came out in 1917,

went on to become Indias first box office hit.

CONTRIBUTION TO INDIAN CINEMA

India made its first talkie in 1931. Alam Ara was thefirst full length indigenously made talkie film, whichwas produced by imperial films and was directed byArdeshir Irani. It also contained seven songs and wasreleased on March 14, 1931, Bombays Majestic

cinema. In 1937 Ardeshir Irani made the first Colour Film in

Hindi : Kisan Kanya

Dada Saheb Phalkes contribution to Indian cinemawas tremendous and hence, Dada Saheb Phalke

Lifetime Achievement Awards were started in hishonour in 1969.Devika Rani, Grand daughter ofRabindra Tagore, won the first award.

KICK STARTING HIS CAREER

directorial debut Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge that hastill date been one of the biggest Bollywood blockbustersin the history of Indian cinema. He got both critical aswell as commercial success for the film.

Followed by Karan Johars directorial Debut Kuch KuchHota Hai in 1998 which went on to be the biggest hit ofthat year. Shah Rukh starred opposite Kajol and RaniMukherjee in that film, Salman Khan also had a guestappearance.
