Kids Shed

My apologies for this “Update” coming after so long; more like “Outofdate”…

The last 5 weeks of Term 3 – since finishing with solar cars – has been a whirlwind of activity in Kids Shed.

Years 3 and 4 have completed a unit of work on Problem Solving. They were tasked with researching then designing and constructing toy hot

air balloons. We finished with four balloons on the last Thursday “ready” to fly. Again, we had crossed fingers for good weather; this time for a

chilly morning with no wind. No luck! VERY windy!

So, balloons are ready to fly. Kids are excited. It’s the last Kids Shed session for the term. And balloons cannot be released outside…. What

to do?? The hall? No, better not, jus’ gotta new floor… So we shut the roller door of the shed to keep the wind outside, lit a candle (our

source of lighting in KS), hung the balloon from the ridge beam…. and lit the fire-lighter. Hopefully the balloon would at least lift its weight off

the string it dangled from & demonstrate that it worked.

Well, none of the balloons actually flew… and one caught fire. We worked on persuading ourselves that they nearly flew, were taking their

weight… “Mr Lewis! I saw the string go slack!” “Oh, good observation skills, my boy!” Our conclusion? We needed bigger garbage bags…

and a bigger shed!

On to the Stage 1 Egg-Drop Challenge: students from 1/2D, 2B and 2L had been asked to drop a fresh egg onto a bathroom tile lying in a

plastic box from a height of 30cm – and their egg was not to crack or break. The challenge was to design the box so that packing material of

their choice would decelerate the egg, breaking its fall (not the egg). The children had just 6 cm available to them to stuff with softies. We

talked about gravity, acceleration, impact, Laws of Motion and how silly Humpty Dumpty had been. Children were asked to bring to school

materials they thought would be suitable for a “crumple zone”… feathers came, bubble wrap, straws, cotton wool, foam, pipe cleaners…

and… MARSHMALLOWS! Of course! Thank you, parents children and all, for your input, your purchases, for “thinking outside the box”!

Because this experiment, when it came to testing the crumple zones became intriguing.

We gathered outside classrooms so that other members of the class could witness results – and maybe soggy yellow marshmallows. The

“wall” from which Humpty dropped began at 30cm height. SUCCESS! No break! And then the height rapidly rose in 20cm steps… 50cm…

70cm and the egg bounced out of the box, cracked on concrete… FOWL! (woops – FOUL!) Repeat, SUCCESS! We reached a height of over

a meter, 110cm before we got soggy yellow marshmallows! Truly amazing to drop a fresh egg from over a meter onto a hard surface with just

6cm of gentle and firm deceleration! So don’t be surprised, now parents, if you find marshmallows stuffed inside your child’s bike helmet!

CANTEEN NEWS

The new term 4 menu is going very well, with lots of orders coming in for our yummy new summer meals- the taco wraps have

definitely been a winner! If you haven’t got a copy you can find it on the Skoolbag ap in the canteen section, or a paper copy can

be picked up from the canteen or office.

Flexischools is a quick and convenient way to place your child’s lunch orders- do it the night before from the comfort of your

lounge, or set up a regular order and you don’t need to worry about it again! No worries of lost monies or paper bags being

forgotten to be handed in, or scrambling for change in the morning. The canteen is running some exclusive offers and specials

only available on Flexischools, so jump on flexischools.com.au to see how quick and easy is to set up an account!

Red Day Pizza notes and money need to be in by Monday 24th October- no late orders are able to be accepted. Notes went

home last Friday, if your child did not receive a note please see the office or the canteen asap. Orders are now able to be placed

on Flexischools with the cut off being Monday 24th at 2pm for online orders.

Please read the following information about our Term 4 Volunteer year hosting. Volunteers are a critical part of our school

canteen- without helping hands food just cannot be prepared and served. If you are unable to help on your allocated week

please have a look over the roster to find a day that suits you, any time is greatly appreciated. And as always we need to keep

up with the demand for Anzac bikkies, our preferred recipe was put on the school Facebook page last Sunday or the office and

canteen have paper copies. Donations of cooked biscuits can be accepted at the office or canteen.

Year Hosting

Starting from week 4, each school year will be having a turn being involved with ‘Year Hosting’ in the Canteen. Year 5 are

going to kickstart us off on the week starting Monday 31st October, and each year under them will be allocated a week

throughout term 4. Year 6 parents will have an opportunity to participate in the end of year/end of primary school activities

planned for their children.

Please find the week/s that are applicable to you, choose a day that suits you best and send your form back so we can have

lots of participation from each years families. On lunch order days you will be working with our Canteen Co-ordinator Mel

Caldwell who organises the day and ensures everything runs smoothly. Our canteen is air-conditioned, lunch is provided and

most importantly, your involvement directly helps your children.

Week starting –

31st October – Year 5 7th November – Year 4

14th November – Year 3 21st November – Year 2

28th November – Year 1 5th December – Kindergarten

The canteen is open from 8.45 am to 2.00pm, Monday, Wednesday & Friday (lunch order days) and 12.30pm to 2pm Tuesday

& Thursday. Any time is very much appreciated.

Our whole school hopes to benefit from this new class hosting system with parents given another opportunity to get to know

one another, help their school, encourage year team work that brings the home and school together and giving families a

better understanding of our canteen and what it has to offer.

Forms can be returned to canteen or office. Please contact our canteen

co-ordinator Mel on 0422335939 if you require further information.

Thank you.
