Introduction to Faculty-Level Awards Each Faculty may annually award a maximum of two awards. If two awards are granted, one will be a Faculty Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning through Sustained Innovation. The other may be a second award of this type or a Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching.

There are three primary distinctions between the two types of Faculty-level awards:

1. IntentThe Faculty Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning through Sustained Innovation hasbeen designed to acknowledge those educators who have identified a problem, challenge or issue anddesigned, developed, evaluated, improved and collected data on the success of a specific responsive andinnovative solution.

The Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching has been designed to acknowledge those staff who are excellent educators and have made a significant difference in the student learning experience. Awardees will not be assessed on the basis of innovation.

2. EligibilityBoth awards require that the educator receive a minimum of two nominations from students and/or staff inany combination. Both nominations may be from students, both from staff, or one from a student and onefrom staff. One of these nominations may also be a self-nomination.

Nominees for the Faculty Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning through Sustained Innovation must have been staff members in a teaching position at Bond University for a minimum of two full consecutive years if early career (no more than five years’ experience teaching in any higher education institution, including tutoring and part time teaching) and three full consecutive years if not early career. Note: the innovation must have been fully implemented for two years if early career and three years if not, meaning that if this is equal to the applicant’s tenure at Bond University, the innovation must have commenced immediately.

Page 3: Bond University Learning & Teaching Awards · Bond University’s mission is ‘…to inspire tomorrow’s professionals who share a personalised and transformational student experience.’

Nominees for the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching must have taught in a minimum of three semesters (or equivalent) over the past two years at Bond University. Sessional staff are eligible and invited to apply.

3. ProgressionThe Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching does not progress directly to other award pathways. Recipients of the Faculty Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning through Sustained Innovation are expected to apply for the Vice-Chancellor Quality Excellence Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning through Sustained Innovation and then the Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching – Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. Note: The application process is aligned between the three levels and need only be refined and revised throughout the progression.

A panel of the Faculty’s choosing will assess the submitted nominations. The one restriction on Faculty Assessor Panel membership is that peer mentors assisting with the drafting of Award Application Statements must not be panel members. The deadline for Faculty announcement of award recipients is 3 February 2017.

1. Faculty Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning through Sustained InnovationNomination Form

2. Maximum Four Page Written Statement

Nominees must select ONE of the four assessment criteria listed below, and include clear and consistent forms of evidence.

The assessment criteria are:

1 Approaches to teaching and the support of learning that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn.

This may include fostering student development by stimulating curiosity and independence in learning; participating in effective and empathetic guidance and advice for students; assisting students from equity and other demographic subgroups to participate and achieve success in their courses; encouraging student engagement through the enthusiasm shown for learning and teaching; inspiring and motivating students through effective communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; enabling others to enhance their approaches to learning and teaching; and developing and/or integrating assessment strategies to enhance student learning.

2 Development of curricula, resources or services that reflect a command of the field. This may include developing and presenting coherent and imaginative resources for student learning; implementing research-led approaches to learning and teaching; demonstrating up-to-date knowledge of the field of study in the design of the curriculum and the creation of resources for learning; communicating clear objectives and expectations for student learning; providing support to those involved in the development of curricula and resources; and contributing professional expertise to enhance curriculum or resources.

3 Evaluation practices that bring about improvements in teaching and learning. Evaluation comprises making judgements about the quality of programs and activities that are part of the

Page 5: Bond University Learning & Teaching Awards · Bond University’s mission is ‘…to inspire tomorrow’s professionals who share a personalised and transformational student experience.’

academic, cultural and social experience of higher education. This may include showing advanced skills in evaluation and reflective practice; using a variety of evaluation strategies to bring about change; adapting evaluation methods to different contexts and diverse student needs and learning styles; contributing professional expertise to the field of evaluation in order to improve program design and delivery; and the dissemination and embedding of good practice identified through evaluation.

4 Innovation, leadership or scholarship that has influenced and enhanced learning and teaching and/or the student experience. This may include participating in and contributing to professional activities related to learning and teaching; innovations in service and support for students; coordination, management and leadership of courses and student learning; conducting and publishing research related to teaching; demonstrating leadership through activities that have broad influence on the profession; providing innovative learning and teaching for different contexts, including technology enhanced environments, for large and small class sizes and/or to meet the needs of a diverse student cohort; and influencing the overall academic, social and cultural experience of higher education.

In assessing the evidence supporting Early Career nominations, consideration will be given to the career stage of the nominee.

Written Statement The written statement describes the nominee’s contribution to student learning and must address one of the four assessment criteria, providing evidence to support claims.

The written statement must have four components which must be presented in the following order:

• proposed citation (maximum 25 words)- avoid jargon and include the discipline or field of work and thedistinctive contribution of the nominee or team; the citation should inform the broadest possibleaudience about the work of the nominee

• a summary of the particular contribution (innovation) and its specific context

• a statement addressing the chosen assessment criterion providing evidence of the contribution

• a summary of robust evidence of evaluation, innovation, leadership and scholarship in the writtenstatement that the nominee’s contribution has: influenced student learning, student engagement or theoverall student experience; gained recognition from fellow staff, the institution and the broadercommunity; and been sustained for a period of no less than three years (two years for early career).

It is strongly recommended that nominees seek peer support in the preparation of their nomination and that these are proofread prior to submission. Nominees should note that for the overall university and national citations and awards, assessors are likely to be drawn from cognate disciplines and learning and teaching specialisations; it should not be presumed they have detailed knowledge of the discipline. Discipline jargon should therefore be avoided in all award applications.

Length of written statement The written statement is limited to four A4 pages. Excess pages will not be accepted.

Statement of contribution (for team nominations) Team nominations must include an additional page which explains the role and indicates the percentage contribution of team members.
