Bond University was given its University status in 1987, having been established under an Act

of the Queensland Parliament. Bond is part of the Australian system of higher education, and is

recognised as an accredited Australian university by the Australian Ministerial Council on Education,

Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA), which is responsible for establishing national

protocols for education in Australia. It is also a full member of Universities Australia (UA) and the

Association of Commonwealth Universities.

The Bond University English Language Institute (BUELI) is located on the Bond University campus, in the heart of the Gold Coast in Australia. BUELI students have full access to the University’s world-class facilities as well as university social events.

ARRIVING AT BONDWe will arrange arrival and departure transfers from Brisbane or the Gold Coast airport. We will also arrange transfers to and from all excursions.

On your first day you will meet key staff members and take a tour of the campus. You will also be given a simple English test and be interviewed to ensure you are placed in the best class for your level of English.

ACCOMMODATIONBUELI students may choose from two different accommodation options - homestay with a local family or off-campus accommodation.

HOMESTAYLiving with a local family, you’ll learn about Australian customs and can practice your English every day. Homestay packages include a single room with study facilities, two meals per day between Monday and Friday, and three meals per day on weekends. Room-only options are also available. OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATIONThere are a variety of accommodation options available within walking distance of Bond. You can expect to pay around AUD$140 - AUD$190 per week for a furnished bedroom in a shared apartment.

LIVING EXPENSESStudents can expect to pay around AUD$18,000* per year for living expenses, including accommodation.

APPLICATIONSStudents can apply online for entry into BUELI courses at www.bond.edu.au/apply-for-bueli.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION VISA REGULATIONSBUELI students will need to apply for an Australian visa. Student visa holders are required to attend classes full-time, maintain over 80 per cent attendance at class and show regular improvement in their English. Tourist visa holders may study for three months and are not permitted to work in Australia. Working Holiday visa holders may study with BUELI for up to 17 weeks and work for the rest of the year.

COURSE AND VISA EXTENSIONSBUELI staff can help you extend your English course and can put you in contact with the immigration department if you need to apply to extend your visa. Bond University staff can provide advice on degree programs at Bond and entry requirements.

HEALTH INSURANCEThe Australian Government requires that all international Student visa holders and their dependants have health insurance for the duration of the visa. You must also have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before you apply for a Student visa. If you extend your visa, you must also extend your OSHC.

We recommend that students on Tourist or Working Holiday visas purchase health and travel insurance.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSESCRICOS Course Code 066082C

DESCRIPTIONThis course is designed to improve your academic English and study skills so you can enrol in Bond University or other higher education courses in Australia and internationally.

CONTENT / ASSESSMENT The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is a full-time program. There are three levels – each level is one semester long. When you apply, you will be placed in the right level of the program for your level of English.

Level 1Develop language and study skills through planning and writing essays, improving reading speed, learning how to take and organise notes, and planning and delivering short speeches and presentations.

Level 2Develop writing skills, research skills for essay writing, text analysis skills and note-taking strategies.

Level 3Develop skills in writing reports and essays, note-taking from written and spoken texts, understanding university lectures, research and study skills, arguments and debates.

In class we focus on academic English for getting into

university and studying for the IELTS test. My study is challenging, but I really enjoy my classes. At Bond we really have a chance to

improve, because this university focuses on the students. The campus is extremely beautiful and the students here really love being at Bond. I am currently studying at a Japanese university and want to go on to do my master’s in social welfare and education.

Bond University English Language Institute offers a variety of English language programs. These on-campus programs prepare you for success in life, as well as to study full degree programs at Bond University. Completion of these programs will significantly enhance your career prospects.

PROGRAMS

All EAP students, regardless of level, are assessed in the four macro skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking through the following:• Ongoing assignments throughout the semester• A mid-semester exam (Week 7)• A final exam (Week 14)• Students who successfully complete their level will receive a BUELI certificate

LENGTHEach level takes 14 weeks studying full-time at 25 hours per week. Five hours of this will be independent study and / or individual consultation.

When I came to study at BUELI I didn’t speak any English.

After one year of studying here I became better at English than my friends who are studying at other English schools. I improved

so much because the teachers at BUELI are really helpful and have great experience.

ENTRY REqUIREMENTSEAP students should have a study record that reflects dedication and commitment, and school records that meet University entry requirements. Students must successfully pass BUELI’s EAP entry test to be admitted into this program.

As a guide, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results usually correspond to the following EAP entry levels:

FURTHER STUDYCompletion of Level 3 will satisfy the English language entry requirements for most Bond University degree programs, which require an IELTS 6.5 entry level.

Bond University Pathway Programs Direct entry from EAP Levels 1, 2 and 3 with no further IELTS. Direct entry from General English with IELTS of 5.5 with no band less than 5.0.

Diploma of University English Studies Graduate Diploma in University English Studies.

BUELI EAP Level 2 Pre-entry test

Diploma of University English Studies Graduate Certificate in University English. Conditional entry to some Bachelor and Diploma programs.

BUELI EAP Level 3 Pre-entry test

Direct entry to undergraduate and postgraduate programs that have an IELTS entry requirement of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.

DESCRIPTIONGeneral English is designed to improve your English skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar.

CONTENT / ASSESSMENTClasses are available from elementary to advanced and focus on everyday English. Activities in which you will take part include: • Active listening• Pair and group practise• Vocabulary and grammar• Role play and drama• Excursions• Writing workshops• Games, music, television and movies General English students are assessed on weekly tasks, mid-term and end of term tests in the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and grammar.

LENGTHOur programs are self paced and students are tested every five weeks. Once a student has improved sufficiently, they may move up to the next level. On average a student can expect to stay on one level for

10 weeks. Full-time students study for 25 hours per week. Part-time study is also available (visa permitting) for 17.5 hours per week.

SCHEDULE AND FEESGeneral English programs commence every 10 weeks throughout the year, except for 10 days over the Christmas and New Year period. I researched the English language schools on the

Gold Coast a lot before coming to Australia and discovered that BUELI was definitely the best. The campus is amazing and the

atmosphere is great. I have really enjoyed using the huge range of facilities here on campus which makes it easy to make friends.

BUSINESS ENGLISHCRICOS Course Code 065669F

DESCRIPTIONBusiness English is designed to teach you how to communicate more effectively in the business world. This course will improve your business English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will also improve your grammatical accuracy and expand your vocabulary.

CONTENT / ASSESSMENTThe Business English course covers language relating to teamwork, the office, communication, corporate hospitality, company structures and systems, buying and selling, customer service, travel and conference meetings, reporting results, health and safety, marketing, presentations, jobs and careers.

Progressive assessments are based on regular in-class tests and projects.

LENGTHThe Business English program is 10 weeks in duration. Classes commence every five weeks, and the minimum study period is five weeks. The Business English course is full-time at 25 hours per week.

ENTRY REqUIREMENTSUpper intermediate level. You are required to take a BUELI entry test to qualify for this course. You may be advised to take General English first.

from other countries. The classes were fun because my teacher was very friendly and helpful. In class we discussed real-life

business and workplace situations which has helped me prepare for working in a real workplace. My goal is to work in international relations in my country and I believe BUELI has helped me get one step closer.

CAMBRIDGE FIRST CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISHCRICOS Course Code 066083B

DESCRIPTIONThis program is designed to prepare highly motivated students for the Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) examination, which is recognised internationally for employment and study purposes.

CONTENT / ASSESSMENTThis intensive course is designed to increase your ‘natural English’ capabilities including:• Developing reading and listening skills.• Improving writing skills: transactional letters, emails,

reports and job applications.• Expanding your topic-specific vocabulary and informal

everyday expressions.• Enhancing your fluency and pronunciation while

removing translation errors.

Students undertake the Cambridge exam at one of the local accredited testing centres. Those who successfully complete their level will receive a BUELI certificate.

LENGTHThe Cambridge FCE program is 10 to 12 weeks long when studying full-time at 25 hours per week. The course is offered four times each year and each course ends just before a Cambridge FCE exam date.

The highlight of my study at BUELI has been meeting all my

new friends and the great teachers on this beautiful campus. The teachers really teach from the heart and want us to achieve our best.

The atmosphere among the students in and out of the classroom is really relaxed and fun. The mix of talking, reading, writing and listening is great - I got the highest score in my class last semester. I want to do my Bachelor of Journalism in Sweden and then go abroad again to do my master’s.
