A Tribute to a Son, A Gift to the Community If you’ve been to the library lately, you may have seen a new addition - a custom-made hardwood table with an inlaid chess board. This beautiful table was donated by longtime Friends of the Library, Barbara and Roy Butta in memory of their son Alexander, who passed away in 2012. Alex’s godmother and family friend Sharon Bigelow also contributed funds to the purchase of the table. Alex was an avid chess player, and Barbara believed that a chess table at the library would be a fitting tribute to her son. She was aware of local interest in chess and the high demand for children’s chess programs at the library. Barbara didn’t want the chess table to be only for decoration; she wanted it to be used. Her instincts were right; the chess table is in constant use. On any given day, you will see children, teenagers, and parents playing chess with their children. Chess is popular with all generations of Chatham residents and now there is a public place where they can play. Stop by the library to cool down from the summer heat and play a game of chess! 214 Main Street, Chatham, NJ 07928 | 973-635-0603 | www.chathamlibrary.org THANK YOU FRIENDS! Friends of the Library raised over $28,000 from this year’s Book Sale. Gifts from the Friends continue to fund numerous programs at the library. In addition, Friends funded the acquisition of new tables for our Benigno Meeting Room. Thank you Friends for all your hard work and dedication!

HappeningsDirector’s MessageWith dozens of dedicated volunteers and organizers, it takes many months for Friends of the Library to prepare for their annual book sale in March.

But each year the book sale is one of the biggest events, and biggest sources of program funding, that we see at Library of The Chathams.

Last year the book sale brought in nearly $30,000 and attracted hundreds of visitors from all over New Jersey and neighboring states.

This year’s book sale begins on Saturday, March 12 at 9:30 am.

The monies raised from the annual book sale are used for many things, with the largest portion going to support programming for children, teens, and adults at our library.

Each month children’s programming attracts thousands of visitors for story times, music, dance, arts and crafts, science, and much more, the majority of which receives support from Friends of the Library.

Summer Reading Clubs for all ages are also in part supported by the Friends’ efforts. In the summer of 2015, more than 700 children, dozens of teens, and more than 100 adults signed up for our clubs, reading, reporting on books, and earning prizes.

Thank you Friends of the Library for supporting Library of The Chathams and the community. We hope to see everyone at this year’s book sale!
