724 BOOK REVIEWS Mayo Clin Proc, October 1985, Vol 60 of the role of matching of histocompatibility antigens in various types of allografts. Although the editors are to be commended on the generally logical format of the work and the excellent summary reports, the book is simply a comprehensive collection of the approximately 280 presentations at the conference. The book will be used (as have its predecessors) as a "bible" in tissue-typing laboratories because of its exten- sive data on the reaction patterns of thousands of sera and cells used in the workshop. It is not a formal textbook to be read chapter by chapter, but it should be useful as a reference source for definition of the often idiosyncratic reaction patterns of certain antigens and their sera. Although comprehensive detailed accounts of all the antigens shown to be linked or associated with diseases are not provided, interesting new data from recent studies in patients with certain rheumatologic, malignant, or endocrinologic disorders are included. The section on the analysis of HLA at the DNA level is particularly interesting. Not all the data on transplantation and on the role of blood transfusions are new; however, the information was updated at the time of the conference in 1984. Hence, readers familiar with the literature in these fields may find little material with which to whet their appe- tites. The book is superbly printed and bound, and high- quality paper has been used. Consequently, it is consid- erably less bulky than its predecessors yet contains at least as much information. Although those directly involved in the performance and interpretation of cellular and serologic histocompat- ibility testing will want to have this book in their laborato- ries and will use it frequently, it will also be of intermittent use as a reference source for those who may be involved in studies of HLA and related diseases. Degenerative processes, late complications of com- mon diseases that frequently occur in elderly persons, and various manifestations of common digestive disor- ders in the elderly population are emphasized. The chap- ter on the oral cavity is an excellent summary of mouth disorders associated with systemic diseases. The discus- sions of diverticulosis and ischemic disorders of the intestine are superb. Overall, the text is a useful, well-written summary of geriatric gastroenterology. The wealth of practical infor- mation is punctuated with quotations and historical backgrounds of digestive disorders. The material should appeal to the novice or the experienced gastroenterolo- gist. Ample illustrations and tables complement the text. Although the color photographs of endoscopic lesions are clear, too few (only 16) have been included for a text of this quality. In the next edition, inclusion of many more color illustrations should be considered. This book is an excellent overview of digestive disor- ders in elderly persons. I recommend it as a valuable reference text to physicians in training and to both aca- demic and practicing internists, gastroenterologists, and geriatricians. Thomas R. of the role of matching of histocompatibility antigens in various types of allografts.

Although the editors are to be commended on the generally logical format of the work and the excellent summary reports, the book is simply a comprehensive collection of the approximately 280 presentations at the conference.

The book wil l be used (as have its predecessors) as a "bible" in tissue-typing laboratories because of its extensive data on the reaction patterns of thousands of sera and cells used in the workshop.

Hence, readers familiar with the literature in these fields may find little material with which to whet their appetites.

The book is superbly printed and bound, and high-quality paper has been used. Consequently, it is considerably less bulky than its predecessors yet contains at least as much information.

Although those directly involved in the performance and interpretation of cellular and serologic histocompatibility testing wil l want to have this book in their laboratories and wil l use it frequently, it wi l l also be of intermittent use as a reference source for those who may be involved in studies of HLA and related diseases.

Gastrointestinal Disorders of the Elderly, by Lawrence J. Brandt, 636 pp, with illus, $68, New York, Raven Press, 1984

With the increase in the number of elderly people in our society, interest in the process of aging and in the field of geriatric medicine has expanded. Brandt wrote this textbook to provide a comprehensive summary of the current

knowledge of the aging gut and gastrointestinal disorders in elderly people.

The book is divided into 11 chapters that sequentially cover the oral cavity, the entire alimentary tract, the liver, the biliary tract, and the pancreas. Specific chapters on ischemic disorders of the intestine and diseases of the mesentery, peritoneum, and retroperitoneum are included. Degenerative processes, late complications of common diseases that frequently occur in elderly persons, and various manifestations of common digestive disorders in the elderly population are emphasized. The chapter on the oral cavity is an excellent summary of mouth disorders associated with systemic diseases. The discussions of diverticulosis and ischemic disorders of the intestine are superb.

Overall, the text is a useful, well-written summary of geriatric gastroenterology. The wealth of practical information is punctuated with quotations and historical backgrounds of digestive disorders. The material should appeal to the novice or the experienced gastroenterolo-gist. Ample illustrations and tables complement the text. Although the color photographs of endoscopic lesions are clear, too few (only 16) have been included for a text of this quality. In the next edition, inclusion of many more color illustrations should be considered.

This book is an excellent overview of digestive disorders in elderly persons. I recommend it as a valuable reference text to physicians in training and to both academic and practicing internists, gastroenterologists, and geriatricians.
