Water workouts are ideal for those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Routines are fun and fast-moving, which may make them feel less like a workout and more like a social event. Monday night ZUMBA classes are available at the Belvidere Family YMCA. From walking like a crab to running drills to balance beams, these workouts take school recess and bring it to the health club High-Intensity Workouts: High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a concept behind some of today’s most popular exercise programs. HIIT combines cardiovascular and strength-training movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or low-intensity activity. These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces. While HIIT is functional, it is not best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. Many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts. Trampoline Cardio: For those who want to shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline. Trampoline classes are turning up in some upscale gyms, where each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights to promote a fun and effective cardio experience. The virtues of saving for retirement are extolled from the moment young men and women begin their professional careers. Such advice is sound, and though retirement is a long way off from the start o f one’s career, those professionals who heed these words of wisdom and start saving early are bound to benef it down the road

But even the best advice can fall on deaf ears from time to time, and many people simply don’t save enough for retirement. A 2013 survey from Fidelity Investments revealed just how much financial trouble the ave rage American is likely to be in upon retirement. The survey asked more than 2,000 participants a range o f questions on topics, including their health, retirement and saving habits, and found that the average baby boo mer, which includes those born between 1946 and 1964, was on track to reach just 81 percent of their retirement income needs. Those needs include food, shelter and medical care. The study also found that 40 percent of p articipants across all generations were saving less than 6 percent of their salaries for retirement. That’s espe cially troubling when considering financial planners often advise men and women to save 10 to 15 percent of their sal aries for retirement.

Some simple arithmetic and an examination of assets, including retirement accounts and savings, can shed light on how rosy or bleak a person’s retirement looks. Young professionals have time to make up for their indiscretions, but men and women over 50 who haven’t saved enough for retirement must get to work immediately to ensure their retirement years are comfortable. The following are a handful of ways me n and women can catch up on retirement savings.

How To Catch Up On Retirement Savings

SENIOR LIVING SENIOR LIVING BOONE COUNTY BOONE COUNTY

• Start spending less. The easiest way to catch up on retirement savings is to start spending less. Men and women over 50 know that the sand in their earnings hourglass is running out, and those behind on retirement savings need to make the most of their earnings in the years ahead. That means cutting out any unnecessary expenses so that money can be used to save for retirement. Examine all of your monthly and annual expenses to find ways to trim some fat.

• Contribute more to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you have not been contributing the maximum amount to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, start doing so. This is especially beneficial if your employer matches your contributions. Contributing more to such plans should not drastically affect your take-home pay now if the plan is a pretax plan like a 401(k). * Make IRA catch-up contributions. The Internal Revenue service allows men and women over the age of 50 to make annual catch-up contributions up to $5,500. These contributions must be made to a retirement plan via elective deferrals, and there are additional requirements as well.

• Put more in traditional savings accounts. It’s unwise to expect your retirement accounts to fully fund your lifestyle in retirement, so you will need, or at least want, a substantial amount of money in saving s. The benefit here is the money you put into traditional savings accounts has already been taxed so you won’t incu r any bills from the tax man once you begin to use that money down the road.

• Postpone retirement. Though it’s not ideal for men and women with a target retirement date in mind, postponing the day you call it quits is another way to catch up on retirement savings. Postponing re tirement allows you to build a more substantial retirement portfolio while also decreasing the amount of time you will need to rely on that money. This gives you more flexibility in retirement. Studies have shown that men an d women are simply not saving enough to finance their retirements. But there are myriad ways for those over 50 t o start catching up.

National Physical Therapy Month Meghan Wilinski, Director of Marketing, Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute, Inc.

Every October, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) celebrates National Physical Therapy Month to recognize physical therapists and physical therapist assistants and how they help individuals imp rove and restore movement while reducing pain.

Improve Mobility & Motion Physical therapists are experts in improving mobility and motion. Pain-free movement is crucial to y our quality of daily life, your ability to earn a living, your ability to pursue your favorite leisure activities, and so much more.

For example: • Movement is essential to physical activity, which is necessary to prevent obesity, which is respon sible for at least 18% of US adult deaths. • Mobility is crucial for physical independence, and studies suggest that walking alone can reduce t he risk of heart attack and stroke, hip fracture, and knee arthritis among other benefits. • Consistent movement is vital to maintaining a healthy balance system, which can help prevent costl y falls.

Avoid Surgery and Prescription Drugs While surgery and prescription drugs can be the best course of treatment for certain diagnoses, ther e is increasing evidence demonstrating that conservative treatments like physical therapy can be equally effective (and cheaper) for many conditions.

For example: • Low back pain is routinely over-treated despite abundant evidence that physical therapy is a cost- effective treatment that often avoids advanced imaging scans like MRIs that increase the cost of care and th e likelihood for surgery and injections. • Physical therapy has proven as effective as surgery for meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, ro tator cuff tears, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disk disease, among other conditions.

Participate In Your Recovery Physical therapists routinely work collaboratively with their patients. Treatment plans can be desig ned for the patient’s individual goals, challenges, and needs. Receiving treatment by a physical therapist is ra rely a passive activity, and participating in your own recovery can be empowering. In many cases, patients develop an ongoing relationship with their physical therapist to maintain optimum health and movement abilities across the life span.

This year the APTA will be highlighting ways to age well with the help of physical therapists during National Physical Therapy Month in a special #AgeWell campaign. The goal of this campaign is to educate the general public on things that they can do themselves to live a pain free life and age healthfully during all phases of life.

Join Orthopedic and Sports Therapy Institute (OSTI) along with our two Boone County locations, Belvi dere Physical Therapy and Poplar Grove Physical Therapy as we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month.

At OSTI, we strive to keep our clinical team up to date on the latest, most advanced physical therap y techniques. Our therapists are dedicated to providing lasting results that will restore function in the lives of our patients; no matter the stage of life they may be in.

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can affect even healthy people. It spreads person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms include fever (usually high), headache, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and body aches. A flu shot protects not only you, but those around you.

Breast cancer treatments may last anywhere from six months to a year. Adjusting after treatment may not come so easily at first. But adjustments are easier with time, and many cancer survivors continue to live life to the fullest in much the same way they did prior to their diagnosis.

When treatment ends, patients often still have fears about the cancer, wondering if all of the cance rous cells have been destroyed and worrying about recurrence. But focusing on the present and all of the things you now can do with health on your side is a great way to put your fears behind you.

Many cancer survivors must still visit their doctors after treatments end. Doctors still want to mon itor patients closely, so be sure to go to all follow-up appointments and discuss any symptoms or feelings you may be having. Side effects may continue long after radiation or chemotherapy has ended. Your doctor may ha ve suggestions for coping with certain side effects or will be able to prescribe medications to offset these effects. Follow-up appointments should gradually decrease the longer you have been cancer-free.

It’s not uncommon to feel differently after cancer treatment, as your body has been through quite a lot. Many women still experience fatigue, and sleep or normal rest doesn’t seem to make it abate. Realize this is normal, and how long it will last differs from person to person. It can take months or years for you to expe rience your “new normal.” Things do not happen overnight. While your hair may grow back quickly, it may take som e time for you to feel like yourself again. Exercise routines or other lifestyle changes may help you overc ome fatigue or make it more manageable.

Speaking with others who have survived breast cancer can help. Join a support group or reach out to others through social media. Getting a first-hand account of what can be expected the first year after trea tment can assuage anxiety.

Life After Breast Cancer The moment a person receives a breast cancer diagnosis, his or her life changes immeasurably. The roller coaster of emotions begins, and suddenly this person is thrust into a schedule of doctor’s appointments, treatments and visits from friends and family

The World Cancer Research Fund International says breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and men and is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 countries worldwide. Despite that prevalence, the five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with localized breast cancer (cancer that has not spread to the lymph nodes or outside the breast) is 98.5 percent, says the American Cancer Society. Survival odds increase as more is learned about breast cancer and more people take preventative measures, including routine screenings. Today, there are nearly three million breast cancer survivors living in the United States
