Page 9: Boroondara Cricket Club - WordPress.com Cricket Club JUNIOR PROGRAM TEAM MANAGERS, COACHES HANDBOOK (Last revised 2015-16)

9

6.4.1 Coaches and Team Managers

1. Remember that young people participate for pleasure and winning is only

part of the fun.

2. Never ridicule or yell at a young player for making a mistake or not coming

first.

3. Be reasonable in your demands on each player’s time, energy and

enthusiasm.

4. Know, and operate within, the rules and spirit of cricket and teach your

players to do the same.

5. Ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience.

6. Avoid overplaying the talented players; all young players need and deserve

equal time, attention and opportunities.

7. Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are

appropriate to the age and ability of all players.

8. Display control and respect to all those involved in cricket. This includes

opponents, coaches, umpires, administrators, parents and spectators.

Encourage your players to do the same.

9. Show concern and caution toward sick and injured players. Follow the advice

of a physician when determining whether an injured player is ready to

recommence training or competition.

10. Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest cricket

coaching practices and principles of growth and development of young

people

11. Remain cognisant of the current Junior Section Rules of the ECA and the

Laws of Cricket.

12. Any physical contact with a young person should be appropriate to the

situation and necessary for the player’s skill development.

13. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of

their gender, ability, cultural background or religion

14. If asked to officiate as an umpire, scorer or other match official, you should

all your decision-making.

15. Consumption of alcohol and/or tobacco products while in charge of junior

10

16. Maintain your Working With Children Check (WWCC) registration as required

by the rules of the ECA.

6.4.2 Parents and Spectators

1. Do not force an unwilling child to participate in cricket.

2. Remember, children are involved in cricket for their enjoyment, not yours.

3. Encourage your child to play by the rules.

4. Focus on the child’s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.

5. Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game.

6. Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good

performances and skilful plays by all participants.

7. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting

activities.

8. Respect every official’s decisions and teach children to do likewise.

9. Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators.

Without them, your child could not participate.

10. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of

their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

11. If asked to officiate as an umpire, scorer or other match official, you should

respect the spirit of the game and be consistent, courteous and impartial in

all your decision-making.

11

6.4.3 Players

1. Play by the rules.

2. Assist in the smooth running of the game. Do not waste time as a batter,

bowler or fielder and move quickly between over’s, in the conduct of an over

and in changing batters, which should take place on the field.

3. Observe all protective measures required by the Laws of Cricket and the

Junior Section Rules of the Eastern Cricket Association.

4. Ensure that all special rules for the protection and minimisation of injury risk

to young players are observed.

5. Never argue with an umpire. If you disagree, have your captain, coach or

team manager approach the umpire during a break or after the game.

6. Avoid entering any discussion between the umpire and your opponents.

7. Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, sledging other players,

making unnecessary or disparaging comments to opponents, deliberately

distracting or provoking an opponent are not acceptable or permitted

behaviours in cricket.

8. Work equally hard for yourself and your teammates. Your team’s

performance will benefit and so will you.

9. Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays whether they are made by your

team or the opposition.

10. Treat all participants in cricket as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take

unfair advantage of another competitor.

11. Cooperate with your coach, team manager, teammates and opponents.

Without them, there would be no competition.

12. Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents

and coaches.

13. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of

their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

14. Player consumption of alcohol, tobacco products or illegal substances during

a match is prohibited

15 FEEDBACK

Feedback from players and parents should be provided to Coaches and Team Managers or Age Group Coordinators in the first instance.

16 PATHWAY TO SENIOR CRICKET

By running a junior section and developing young cricketers, the Club provides the opportunity for junior players, wishing to further develop their cricket, to transition into the senior teams. The junior teams are the next generation of senior players and the transition path to the senior ranks helps to ensure the Club’s future. To facilitate this transition, the club utilises the lower grades of its senior ranks as a development ground for aspiring junior cricketers to make the transition into senior cricket. These senior teams are led and mentored by experienced cricketers and provide a great learning opportunity for junior cricketers who want to progress and develop further in the game.

During the season junior players within the older age groups (predominately U16 and U14 players) may be provided with the opportunity to play senior cricket on a Saturday afternoon with matches commencing at 12.30 or 1.00 pm. This participation is encouraged by the Club and only occurs with a signed parental consent form. These forms are distributed to all under 14 and 16 age group players prior to the commencement of the season and are also available during the course of the season.

17 SUN SMART POLICY

The Club will again adopt a sensible policy to ensure player protection from the sun. Sunscreen will be available with all Team Managers, but players are asked to apply sunscreen at home before coming to cricket. Drinks breaks are compulsory but players will also be encouraged to drink when possible throughout match days. A no cap/hat, no play policy will also apply, so please have your hats with you at all times.

18 CLUB HISTORY

The Boroondara Cricket Club was formed on the 26 July 1938. One of only four ESCA matting clubs to continue to play throughout the war years, its home ground was at Highfield Park, where the Club played up until 1999, then moving to its present ground at Victoria Road Reserve, Auburn. In 1980 the Club merged with ESCA club, Riversdale (founded 1966), to form Riversdale-Boroondara. In 1999 the Club changed its name and once again became Boroondara when the junior section of the Club was launched with two sides. Now a central part of the Club’s proud history the junior section provides opportunity for young cricketers to learn and enjoy the game. This participation and development of young cricketers is central to the Club’s activities as it continues its association with local schools and communities and also helps to ensure the Club’s future. Our Club is a thriving community cricket club and we now have 20 junior teams, 6 senior teams, 6 T20 teams and a strong Milo program. We pride ourselves on being an all inclusive club which prides itself on our values and principles to play some part in the enjoyment and development of all our cricketers! To be continued/.....
